Chapter 1 - Beyond The Surface

Chapter 1: Beyond the Surface

Mia Thompson wiped the sweat from her forehead as she hurried to deliver a tray of drinks to table seven. It was a typical Friday night at Bella Vita, the Italian restaurant where she worked as a waitress. The dim lighting and soft music created a cozy atmosphere, but the kitchen was a whole different story. The sounds of sizzling meat and clanging pots filled the air, and the smell of freshly baked bread wafted through the dining area, making Mia's stomach growl with anticipation.

As Mia set the drinks down, she exchanged a warm smile with the couple celebrating their anniversary.

"How's everything tasting?" she asked, refilling their water glasses.

The woman, with her sleek blonde hair and designer dress, gazed adoringly at her husband.

"Everything is delicious, thank you. You have an excellent selection of wines."

Mia beamed with pride. "Thank you, I'll make sure to pass that on to our sommelier."

She loved seeing older couples who still looked very much in love. It was something she didn't get to see a lot growing up. Her grandma raised her, grandpa had died during the civil war when grandma was just 22, pregnant with their first child. She had to raise the child, Mia's mom all alone and never once remarried. She always said grandpa was the one true love of her life.

As she walked back to the bar, Mia's colleagues caught her attention. Rachel, the restaurant's resident gossip queen, was regaling the group with a story about her latest dating disaster.

"He was weird as fuck, he kept saying he'd love to sniff my armpit, like who says that these days? On a first date? Geez, I miss the old days when guys pulled out chairs for ladies and a kiss on the cheeks was considered scandalous. Not these scumbags we have roaming the streets nowadays, the dating scene is a fucking madhouse, I tell you." Rachel huffed out, exasperatedly.

Mia chuckled and shook her head. "Rachel, you're a magnet for crazy men."

Rachel winked. "Hey, someone's got to keep things interesting around here."

The group laughed, and Mia joined in, feeling grateful for her quirky coworkers. They were more than just colleagues; they were her friends, her support system.

"Hey, Mia, how's it going?" asked Emily, a fellow waitress. "You seem a little distracted tonight."

Mia shrugged. "Just a little tired, I guess. Long week."

Emily nodded sympathetically. "I know the feeling. But hey, tomorrow's Saturday, right? We can sleep in."

Mia smiled, feeling a pang of envy. Emily had a boyfriend who worked a regular 9-to-5 job, and they always seemed to have the perfect work-life balance. Mia, on the other hand, was still paying off college loans and working double shifts to make ends meet.

As the night wore on, the restaurant filled with more customers. Mia's section was bustling, but she was in her element, expertly juggling tables and taking orders.

That's when she noticed him – a tall, imposing figure sitting at the bar, sipping a glass of scotch. He looked out of place among the couples and families, his brooding presence commanding attention.

Mia felt a shiver run down her spine as their eyes met. For a moment, they just stared at each other, the noise of the restaurant fading into the background.

Then, the man looked away, and Mia was left feeling unsettled.

As she delivered a plate of pasta to table three, she overheard a snippet of conversation from the table next to her.

"...heard the mafia is involved in some shady dealings," a man said, his voice low and conspiratorial.

Mia's ears perked up. The mafia? She had always been fascinated by the rumors and legends surrounding organized crime. Growing up, she had devoured books and movies about the mob, mesmerized by the power struggles and loyalty codes.

As she continued to work, Mia's mind wandered back to the mafia. She wondered if the rumors were true, if there really were powerful families controlling the city from the shadows.

The thought sent a thrill through her, and she couldn't help but glance at the mysterious man at the bar. Was he involved with the mafia? The idea seemed far-fetched, but Mia couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to him, something hidden beneath the surface.

As the night drew to a close, Mia reflected on the strange encounter. She had always thought of herself as a practical person, not one to indulge in fantasies or conspiracy theories. But there was something about the man at the bar, something that had sparked her imagination and left her wondering.

"Hey, Mia, you okay?" asked Rachel, as they clocked out and said their goodbyes. "You seem a little spaced out tonight."

Mia shrugged. "Just tired, I guess. And maybe a little curious."

Rachel raised an eyebrow. "Curious about what?"

Mia hesitated, unsure if she should share her thoughts. But something about Rachel's kind eyes put her at ease.

"I don't know, just this feeling that there's something more out there for me. Something beyond this ordinary life."

Rachel nodded thoughtfully. "I know what you mean. Sometimes I feel like there's this whole other world out there, just waiting for us to discover it."

Mia smiled, feeling a sense of solidarity with her friend. "Exactly. And I think tonight, I caught a glimpse of it."

As they parted ways, Mia felt a sense of excitement mixed with trepidation. She had no idea what lay ahead, but anything was better than this.
