Chapter 1 - chapter one

Ana's point of view

As I stepped off the the train and onto the warm platform the chilly night air slapped me in the face.

I had been away from Seville. For the familiar feeling of unease settled in like a shroud.

The station was dimly lit.

With only a few flickering fluorescent lights to Guide me.

I looked around, but there was no one in sight.

The silence was oppressive, punctuated only by the distant hum of a car driving by.

I had returned to Seville for one reason to uncover the truth about my sister's disappearance.

I made it through the crowd to our family apartment.

Nothing had changed these past five years. The street was still busy as usual.

Children run up and down the street.

As I pushed open the creaky door, a wave of nostalgia washed over me.

The familiar scent of my grandmother's cooking and the sound of salsa music drifting from the kitchen were just as I remembered.

But beneath the surface I sensed a tension that hadn't been there before.

My grandmother Abuela, stood at the stove her eyes fixed on me as I entered.

Her expression was a mix of warmth and wariness.

M'ija, you're finally home, she said. Her voice trembling slightly. I hugged her tightly, feeling a lump from my throat.

I'm sorry it took me so long, Abuela. I'm not leaving until I find out what happened to Sophia.

She looked at me with so much tenderness in her eyes and said M'ija, i thought we spoke about this.

What happened to Sophia was unfortunate but it's all in the past now.

Let go of it.

I felt a surge of frustration at her words but I tried to keep my tone gentle.

Abuela I know you want me to move on, but

I need to know what happened to Sophia.

I need to know the truth.

You can't just expect me to forget about my own sister.

I paused, studying her expression. You're hiding something aren't you?

No I'm not M'ija.

She closed her eyes and said this is exactly what I mean.

You've started growing suspicious of everybody. Even me.

She whispered the last part.
