Chapter 6: The Deceptive Return

Lila's heart raced as she hurried back to the mansion, the thrill of her encounter with Ethan still coursing through her veins. The night had been intoxicating, filled with whispered promises and heated touches, but now reality loomed large. She had to face Alexander, who was waiting for her at home, blissfully unaware of the betrayal that had unfolded just hours before.

As she entered the grand foyer, the soft glow of candlelight illuminated the space, casting a warm ambiance that felt almost surreal. The aroma of a delicious dinner wafted through the air, and Lila's stomach growled in response. She paused for a moment, taking a deep breath to steady herself before stepping further inside.

"Welcome back, darling!" Alexander called from the dining room, his voice filled with warmth. He stood by the table, which was elegantly set with fine china and crystal glasses, a feast laid out before him. "I was starting to worry."

Lila forced a smile, her heart heavy with guilt. "I'm sorry I'm late. I went to visit a friend," she lied, the words tasting bitter on her tongue.

Alexander raised an eyebrow, concern flickering across his face. "Oh? Which friend?"

"Just… someone from college," she stammered, trying to sound casual. "We lost track of time catching up."

He nodded, but Lila could see the doubt in his eyes. "I called Sarah to see if you were with her, but she said she hadn't seen you."

Lila's heart dropped. She quickly glanced at the maids, who exchanged knowing looks, their eyes wide with surprise. The tension in the room thickened, but Alexander remained oblivious, his focus on her.

"Maybe she just forgot," Lila said, her voice steady despite the panic rising within her. "You know how busy she gets."

"Babe, you know I hate lies." Alexander said.

"Yes, I know. It's just that..." She was stammering.

Alexander shrugged, "Come here, I'm glad you're home now, if you have anything bothering you just let me know. I made your favorite—filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes."

Lila's stomach twisted with guilt as she sat down at the table, the lavish meal before her a stark reminder of the life she was betraying. "It looks amazing," she said, forcing herself to take a bite, the flavors rich and comforting.

As they ate, Alexander chatted about his day, his excitement palpable as he recounted the details of his business meeting. Lila nodded along, her mind elsewhere, replaying the moments she had spent with Ethan. The contrast between her two worlds felt like a chasm, and she struggled to keep her composure.

After dinner, Alexander stood to clear the table, and Lila offered to help, but he waved her off. "You relax. I'll take care of this. You've had a long day."

Lila retreated to the living room, her heart heavy. She felt like a stranger in her own home, the weight of her deception pressing down on her. When Alexander joined her, he was carrying a small suitcase.

"What's that for?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.

"I'm packing for my trip tomorrow," he replied, a smile on his face. "I'll be gone for a few days, but I wanted to make sure we had some time together tonight."

Lila's heart sank. She had hoped for a quiet evening to reconnect, but now she felt the walls closing in. They settled onto the couch, and Alexander wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. She leaned into him, feeling the warmth of his body, but her mind was elsewhere.

As they prepared for bed, Lila felt a mix of emotions. She climbed into bed beside Alexander, who pulled her into a gentle embrace. She closed her eyes, trying to push away the guilt and confusion swirling within her. They fell asleep entwined, but Lila's mind was restless, haunted by the choices she had made.
