Chapter 4: A Birthday to Remember

Lila's birthday arrived, and with it, a whirlwind of celebrations. Alexander, determined to make it unforgettable, had planned a lavish party at their estate, inviting close friends and family.

The day was a blur of laughter, champagne, and elegant conversation. Lila, dressed in a stunning emerald green gown that accentuated her curves, was the center of attention. Guests showered her with compliments and gifts, their eyes widening at the sight of the dazzling diamond necklace Alexander had presented her with. It was a masterpiece, a testament to his wealth and his love.

As Lila admired the necklace, a wave of guilt washed over her. She didn't deserve this, not when she was betraying him with his own secretary. Alexander, oblivious to her internal turmoil, beamed with pride as he watched her eyes sparkle with delight.

"Happy birthday, my love," he whispered, pulling her close for a slow dance. "You deserve the world."

Lila, overwhelmed by his affection, found herself momentarily caught up in the moment. She allowed herself to bask in his love, to appreciate the life they had built together.

Later that evening, as the party wound down, Lila found herself alone on the balcony, the cool night air a welcome respite from the festivities. She pulled out her phone, her fingers hovering over the contact for Ethan. A text message popped up on the screen.

Happy Birthday, my love. I'm thinking of you.

Lila's heart skipped a beat. She quickly typed a reply, her fingers flying across the screen.

Thinking of you too.

A smile played on her lips as she imagined Ethan reading her message. The thrill of their secret affair, the forbidden nature of their connection, was intoxicating.

As Alexander joined her on the balcony, he draped a shawl around her shoulders. "Cold?" he asked, his voice soft.

"A little," she admitted, her gaze lingering on the distant horizon. "It was a wonderful day, Alexander. Thank you."

"You're welcome, my love. You deserve to be celebrated." He pulled her close, his arms encircling her waist. "I love you."

Lila, her heart heavy with guilt, forced a smile and returned his embrace. "I love you too," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

As they retired to their bedroom, Alexander showered her with affection, determined to make it a night to remember. He was a loving husband, a man who adored her. Yet, Lila couldn't shake the feeling that she was living a lie.
