Chapter 9 - A Proposal

Zahira and Sam walk into Sahar's ward. Zahira runs when she sees Sahar and hugs her. "Ouch!!" Sahar yell in pain. "Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!" Zahira leaves her but still remains close to Sahar. "Four days- for four days I was searching for you all around and you are here in this hospital with bandages and what not," Complained Zahira. "I know but…" before Sahar could finish herself, Sam jumped into the conversation, "Sahar was not conscious for four days, it's only this morning she opened her eyes." Zahira starred at Sam, "My friend was unconscious for four days and you did not think that somebody should be contacted?"

Sam regretted his decision to be present in this room right now. It was not a regular accident; it was related to a terrorist and we were ordered to keep Sahar's presence here in this camp a secret. It was for her own safety." Zahira calmed down a bit. She looked at Sahar and rubbed her hand on her head, "Why do you this Sahar, why do you always get yourself in trouble?" Sahar smiled, "You do know why and my troubles have just begun?" Zahira looked at Sahar a bit confused, "What troubles?"

Sahar said, "My file has emerged back and this time, it will take me down" Zahira became pale, "I won't let you go!" Zahira said getting teary eyed. Sam was confused, he had missed all of Sahar's story and Lieutenant Mike and Aaron had not told him anything yet. "Which file?" asked Sam. Zahira looked at Sahar and then at Sam. Sam saw Zahira had tears in her eyes. Sahar wiped the tears from Zahira's eyes. The confident, energetic Zahira had become a baby in front of Sahar. Sahar hugged Zahira and looked at Sam, "the file about my past, the file were I'm a part of Taliban."

Sam couldn't believe his years. Sahar a part of Taliban but he knew it was true the tears in Sahar and Zahira's eyes were the proof that this was true. "Does Aaron know this?" asked Sam. Sahar nodded her head, "Yes he is with Lieutenant Mike."

In Lieutenant Mike's office a heated discussion was underway. "We can't just put her in jail, because she stayed in a camp!" said Aaron. "She just did not stay there, Aaron she trained and was sent to kill one of our commanders" replied Lieutenant Mike. "But she did not harm anyone. It's been years since that incident. If our commander could forgive him why can't us? If he tried to help her, why shouldn't we do the same?" asked Aaron.

"Our Commander helped a kid, but Sahar is not a kid anymore, with her training and knowledge but we can't be sure that she will not be using it against our army!" said Lieutenant Mike. "Exactly she has training and the knowledge and she has not used it to harm anyone yet. She is doing a good work. She runs a school" tried Aaron to convince Lieutenant Mike. "We don't know that. We have a Taliban member in our custody and we are not letting her walk free" decided Lieutenant Mike.

"But do you realize, how she is in our custody, because she saved your soldiers from being blasted apart, she knew about the trap and she tried to warned us and when we did not listen to her, she put herself in danger. And took a bullet because of us," Aaron was loud but he was sensible enough to not yell in front of his senior. Aaron and Lieutenant Mike were looking into each other's eyes. Aaron did not want Sahar's life be destroyed because of her past and Lieutenant Mike was worried what might this girl do in the future.

Sam came to Lieutenant Mike's office and knocked on the door. This diffused the tension between Lieutenant Mike and Aaron. "Sir, it's true. Without Sahar we would be both dead and the mastermind of the rally attack would have been enjoying the rest of his days in some Pakistani Villa," Sam made his point. "We owe one to her, Sir!" pushed Aaron a little more. Lieutenant Mike closed his eyes for a minute and then said, "Okay she will not be imprisoned, but she will not be walking free either!"

Aaron and Sam looked at each other in confusion. Aaron asked, "What do you mean by that?" Mike looked at Aaron and said, "Sahar is well trained, she can speak English and the local languages. She is a local and knows a lot of secrets too." Sam asked, "So, what do you propose?" Lieutenant Mike sat down on his chair and signaled Sam and Aaron to take their seats too. When they were all well settled Lieutenant Mike said, "I want her to work for us. As our secret agent and bring us the information of Taliban."

Aaron did not like this idea. But they had no choice. There was no more convincing, Lieutenant Mike. There was no changing his mind. But Aaron thought of giving a last try, "But Sir, she is not a US citizen. Why would she put her life in danger for us?"

Lieutenant Mike smiled, "because we are in their country, trying to protect their people. And you yourself pointed how she saved yourself and used her knowledge to save your lives. Wouldn't you want this protection spell extended to your brothers in the army?"

Aaron knew Lieutenant Mike was using logical tactics on him and Aaron was not one to fall for mind games but he understood it too. If Sahar can work as their asset, they can save a lot of blood. A lot of lives can be saved. But Aaron wanted this to be Sahar's independent decision, like he has chosen to join the army, he was not forced and he wanted the same for Sahar. But it seemed like they did not share the same fate, Aaron regretted it and wanted to rebel against it. "What if she declines to work for the US army?" Aaron asked to Lieutenant Mike.
