Chapter 10 - In the Limbo

Lieutenant Mike had given his verdict, Either Sahar becomes an American spy or she goes to a dark cell of an unknown jail. And spend her life thinking where did it all go wrong. As Aaron and Sam walked to Sahar's ward, Aaron started to make a mental note of how will he convince Sahar to be a spy. Aaron entered Sahar's ward, he looked at Sahar and Zahira, two friends being there for each other very much like Sam and Aaron. Aaron smiled at the thought but got worried too. He was about to make Sahar's life very much dangerous.

Aaron went to Sahar's bedside, "how are you feeling now?" Sahar smiled a little, "much better." "Why are you lying, she was hit by a bullet! How do you think, she must be feeling?" Sam laughed as it was now Aaron's chance of being lectured. "You must be Zahira, Sahar's friend and partner at school," asked Aaron. "And you must be Aaron, the solider who did not trust my sister and she had to take a bullet for you and lie unconscious in this bed for four days," taunted Zahira. Sam laughed again. "Yes, I understand I made some bad decisions on my last mission, I should have..." Zahira did not let Aaron finish his sentence, "You should have trusted a local, we all are not on their side." Sahar tried to intervene, "Stop it Zahira, it was nobody's fault."

"No Sahar! It was my fault," apologized Aaron. Zahira noticed something in Aaron's pocket. She did not think for a second before inquiring, "What is that in your pocket?" Aaron started to blush and embarrassingly took a black cloth from his pocket. It was Sahar's hijab. Aaron placed it on the bed and said, "Uhm, it's Sahar's! Thank you again for lending it to me." Sahar wanted to stretch the white sheet and hid her face in it. Zahira looked at Sahar and smiled less with her lips and more with her big eyes, which she made even bigger to troll Sahar. It was getting very awkward for Aaron, "Sahar there is something important that we need to talk about, but right now I, must leave and let you two friends be together."

Sahar and Zahira spent some more time together and then Sam asked if he could drive back Zahira home and Zahira agreed. This time Sahar smiled and showed her eyes to Zahira. On the way back home Sam and Zahira talked about their lives and how different their circumstances were. Sam was away from his home and Zahira had never known what a home was like. Soon they reached home. Zahira looked at the stars in the sky and said, "I would have invited you in, but it's late. I don't want my neighbors' making up stories." Sam smiled, "Sure, maybe I can come tomorrow morning to take you back to the hospital?" Zahira smiled and went in. Sam droves ahead, it's been years since he had dropped a girl home. This had sort of felt like a date.

In the hospital, Aaron had waited for an opportunity to talk with Sahar. When there was no one else in the ward, he went in. Sahar was lying on the bed. As Aaron walked to her bed, she tried to sit up but failed. Aaron gave her a hand. It broke his heart to see that how much pain Sahar must be in because of him, their lack of intelligence and his bias of not trusting a local. And now he was about to give her more pain and problems. "I'm sorry for my friend Zahira, she is bit protective about me, she has no one else in this world, she can't live without me," said Sahar. This sentence put even more pressure on Aaron.

Aaron kept his voice low and started to speak, "Sahar, I tried my best to convince Lieutenant Mike to let you go free, but he won't do it." Sahar listened with patience, and then said, "Am I going to a jail?" Aaron replied with as much care and empathy he could gather, "There is a way to avoid that, you will have to work for the US government. I know it's dangerous and…" Sahar cut Aaron mid-sentence, "I will do it."

Sahar had made her decision and Aaron did not question it. A fake story was created that Sarah got lost in a desert storm and was rescued by a passing US military team. Hence, she was in a military hospital. The only civilian who knew the truth was Zahira. And she was asked to not reveal anything as it might endanger their lives. All the terrorist who was present that day when Sahar got shot, were dead. But the nexus was still very strong. After a few more days of treatment, Sahar was sent home. Aaron missed Sahar a lot but they were not allowed to meet or talk directly anymore.

Sahar too missed Aaron. But was confined to her home. She used to go up on her terrace and wait for Aaron to show up. But Sahar kept waiting for a month and there was no sign of Aaron or any message from him. Sahar started to go teach in her school like she used to before she has met Aaron and her life had become very exciting. Now, the life was not boring, Sahar liked gathering kids and teaching them new things. But Sahar used to replay that night when she got shot. Replaying that memory when Aaron picked her up was her night routine. She would fall asleep thinking about Aaron. And wondering if she will ever see him again.

Army had an NGO wing which use to distribute notebooks and stationery to local schools. Sahar receives one such package and when she opens the first note book, a page falls out of it. Sahar quickly picks up the paper, she reads it. It says – Visit the hospital. And this moment she knows it's time for her first mission.
