Chapter 1 - Prologue

Y 2430, M Dec., D xx

-The general approached me whilst I was resting, she had a different look on her face than usual, it seemed like she had a lot on her mind and was uneasy.

"Number 1, I've come to assign you your 1000th mission."

-I looked at her and smiled I was expecting something nice and challenging for my last mission before I retire.

"What is it?"

-She had a look of regret before telling me the mission, it felt like she was holding back her words but she had no choice but to tell me.

"Mission-7...I apologize in advance."

-My smile vanished as soon as I heard her words, my face became dull as my voice cracked on the following words, I was in utter disbelief.

"Why..."

-My voice trembled whilst whispering

"WHY!! THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MY LAST MISSION BEFORE I RETIRE I'VE SERVED THIS WORLD ENOUGH TO BE GIVEN THE RANK OF NUMBER 1 AND "THEY'RE" THROWING ME AWAY LIKE THIS?!"

-I raged like a madman, I really did something bad...how could I do that to her.

"We had no choice other than "Him" you were the best chance we had."

The general said as her voice stuttered and she had with a grim look on her face,

The room was in silence for a few moments.

"I'll think it through"

-I said to her as my voice trembled, I...couldn't sleep that day.

-This will be the my last record before I proceed into this so called "mission" to whoever is listening to this you've been given this mission too hm? I wish you luck-

The recording stopped.

"So Jin or should I call you "Null" now will you proceed with this mission?"

Jin laughed.

"The last guy to attempt this was the former number 1 right? Of course I will who do you think I am? I'm the one above number 1."

"Or in this case below?"

Jin laughed, but somehow it felt forced.

Meanwhile the general sighed.

"You should be taking this seriously..."

Jin looked at the general for a moment and noticed something was off about her.

"Why so serious? Ahh...I get it."

"It must be because the last guy who attempted this mission was your lover?"

The general was surprised as the aura in the room suddenly became dark.

"You shouldn't pry into peoples life you know?"

She said coldly with a serious tone as her eyes stared into Jin's, her aura emanating similar to killing intent, the cold stare startled him as he realized it was sensitive topic.

"C-calm down I'll definitely finish this and avenge him, after all, I've never failed a mission before and it won't happen...ever."

Jin said with growing confidence in his voice, it was as if he already knew the outcome of this mission, unlike the others who trembled in fear Jin was...cheerful he was untroubled despite the lives this mission has taken.

The general looked at him with doubt yet beneath her look was her hope for Jin to finally complete the mission.

"Well you were given the title "Null" for a reason right?"

She said sarcastically as she walked away from Jin, with a slight grin on her face, she thought to herself.

'I hope you succeed...'

Jin sighed with relief as he gazed at the ceiling contemplating his decisions, the confident look on his face had vanished his tone was now serious, he had given hope to many people and letting them down was not an option.

"Why is she so cold..."

Jin remembered the reports of the previous soldiers taking up this mission at first...he was terrified...but that was when he was still a cadet and although many years have passed, beneath his arrogant face and attitude was... a child afraid of failure and death.

"This mission does worry me though."

He said with a slight crack in his voice, while his hands were over his eyes, then Jin stood up and went back to his room, preparing for his most difficult mission yet.

3 days later

Jin arrived at a site with a strange portal in it, as he walked closer to it, his nervousness grew, yet his eyes didn't waver he was set on accomplishing this task as the best soldier of earth.

Jin's eyes glanced at his surroundings, knowing he may never come back again.

The purple portal swirled to the point that heavy winds surrounded the site, dust flew all over the place as Jin covered his face.

"Haa, finally I've prepared too much and waited so long for this."

Suddenly a kid approached Jin as he walked towards the site, the kid struggled due to winds coming from the portal, yet he endured it.

"M-mister!"

He shouted cheerfully despite the harsh environment.

"You're Jin Grandfeil right?? May I please take a picture with you?"

The boy said as he pulled on Jin's coat.

Jin looked at the boy with slight smile and squatted down to cover the boy from the winds and dust.

"Hm? Sure, I'll make it quick so you can go."

He smiled brightly.

"Thanks mister Jin when I grow up I'll join the corps and I will definitely surpass you!!"

The boy stated confidently with a cheerful face.

Jin waved his hand as the boy ran back.

As Jin walked towards the portal he had a dark look on his face.

"I guess it's time..."

But before Jin could enter the portal someone shouted behind him.

"Be careful!!"

Jin looked back and saw the general, he waved with a bright look on his face.

"I guess she's not that cold after all."

He whispered as he waved at the general.

As Jin walked closer towards the portal his nervousness vanished as he knew many people counted on him, with each step he took his eyes were filled with more conviction, with this mission humanity will be closer to true peace.

As Jin was about to enter the portal he took a last look at the scenery behind him, he gazed at the beautiful sky and as his heart was fully calmed down, he entered the portal.

----

4 days passed after Jin entered the portal.

The council held a meeting regarding Jin, the tension in the room was high, some of them thought that they had lost their best soldier, while some had still hopes of him completing it and coming back, nonetheless all of them still had even the slightest bit of hope for Jin to come back.

The room was in silence for a moment, then the silence broke as one of the members spoke.

"Are we sure he's still alive there? Shouldn't we send a rescue team?"

Another member immediately answered.

"We still can't be sure, if we interrupt him it could hinder his progress on clearing it, and sending a rescue team would be completely useless, the best soldiers of every generation that was sent there never came back, sending a rescue team would just be a suicide mission."

"But he's our best soldier we can't afford to lose him, we should at least try!"

They argued.

"Then are you willing to throw away a thousand lives for the price of one?!"

Amongst the commotion someone had noticed that something was wrong...

Then out of nowhere the general barged through the door and interrupted the meeting

"Hm? What's the meaning of this General?"

One of the members asked as they noticed her expression.

She had a surprised yet joyful look on her face., her hopes became true as she announced excitedly.

"HE'S OUT!!"

Meanwhile back at the site, Jin came out of the portal covered in blood and half dead, as he got a glimpse of his surroundings he was glad, he missed the bright blue sky.

He laughed as he whispered.

"I did it."

Jin said before falling onto the ground as he still had a smile on his face.

A couple hours later

"He's lost too much blood!"

The doctors looked at each other as if they understood what should be done, their eyes were filled with regret as the operation they were about to do was something everyone despised.

"We have no choice but to do "that"."

-----

Jin woke up as he gazed at the white ceiling, he was glad that he woke up he reminisced at his earlier years hoping that he could just have fun like before.

"I'm alive."

Jin was relieved, He stood up, but he felt something wrong, he could "Feel" his right arm despite losing it in the portal, as Jin lifted his arms he was baffled.

"WA-"

Jin was shocked at his body, his hands, neck and most of his arms were changed with mechanical parts, his heart was filled with regret... he had never dreamed nor hoped of becoming a "Cyborg".

He sighed yet he felt relieved as long he was alive.

"I guess this was the only way for me to live...."

He said as his face was still full of regret, he contemplated his decision back then as his head was filled up with "What ifs".

Then out of nowhere a voice echoed throughout his head.

[System Updated]

Jin suddenly felt pain he had never felt before his brain was "Overheating" he gritted his teeth as he grimaced.

'It feels like my brain is being stabbed a thousand times over and over again!'

He thought to himself while in agonizing pain.

"What's happening to me!"

He asked himself as he held his head with both his hands, his face was sweating, yet he endured the pain hoping for it to calm down soon.

After enduring the pain for half a minute it finally stopped.

"Haa!"

Jin shouted with relief as sweat trickled down from his face.

[System has been successfully planted]

After hearing Jin's screams the nurses rushed into his room full of worry.

"Sir! You're awake! Are you ok?"

Jin looked at them, baffled at their reactions, they "acted" like they couldn't see it.

"C-can you not see this??"

He asked bewildered at their behavior as his eyes widened.

The nurses looked at him with pity and worry.

"Your brain must be damaged...you should go back to rest sir."

One of the nurses said sarcastically.

After finally confirming their reactions Jin's question was answered, they really couldn't see it.

"Ah...that must be it."

Jin nodded.

"You can go back now and could you not tell anyone else that I'm awake? I'm gonna rest for a bit."

The nurses agreed and went back with a worried look on their face.

"Can they really not see this?? Is this from my mechanical parts? Did they tamper with my brain too??"

He was still surprised by the hologram that was in front of him.

"I'll leave it for now there doesn't seem to be any other features other than these..., I should keep quiet for now."

He said with a nervous tone as he slowly calmed down, he was relieved as long as it didn't cause him trouble.
