Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: The Haunting Within

The battlefield was a cacophony of destruction, the air filled with the sound of artillery fire, exploding debris, and the roar of mech engines. Dominic's heart raced, his hands gripped tightly on the controls of The Golden Titan, yet his mind was in turmoil. The disorienting hum in his skull seemed to grow louder with each passing moment, like a heartbeat that wasn't his own.

The battle raged on, but Dominic couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. It wasn't just the intensity of the fight or the pressure mounting from every side—it was something deeper, something insidious creeping into his very consciousness.

His vision flickered momentarily, the screens in front of him distorting, as if they were glitching. His stomach churned.

"Dominic, report!" came the voice of Commander Lox through the comms. "Status!"

Dominic gritted his teeth, shaking his head as if trying to clear the fog in his mind. He couldn't let it take over. Not now. Not in the middle of the fight.

"I'm fine," Dominic said, his voice cold and controlled, though it wavered just slightly. "Engaging hostiles."

The Golden Titan surged forward, stomping across the battlefield with a heavy thud. A massive juggernaut-class CMC mech was ahead, locked in combat with another UOP unit. Without hesitation, Dominic raised his massive mech's arm, activating the railgun mounted on its shoulder.

The energy surged through his body, and with a roar of raw power, the Golden Titan unleashed a volley of deadly rounds at the juggernaut. The blasts hit the enemy mech dead on, tearing into its armor and causing it to stagger back, sparks flying from its exposed systems.

But something was off. The targeting system had locked onto the wrong mech—a mistake he hadn't made before. He quickly recalibrated, firing again. But the energy blast missed, hitting the ground instead, sending a spray of dirt and rock into the air.

"Dammit," Dominic muttered under his breath, frustration boiling in his chest. "Focus."

Yet, as he refocused, the strange sensation in his mind grew stronger. His vision blurred again, and this time, it wasn't just a glitch. He saw something—images flashing across his screen like memories he didn't recognize. They were distorted, twisted, a chaotic montage of fragments—snippets of past battles, of the strange core he had scavenged from the old wrecked mech, of Zara's final moments.

The whispers returned.

Dominic clenched his fists on the controls, fighting to stay grounded. The implant in his brain was reacting to the core. He could feel it, the way the neural connection was being warped, twisted by the alien technology that had fused itself into his mind. It was becoming harder to tell where his thoughts ended and the implant's influence began.

"Dominic!" Lox's voice rang out again, more urgent this time. "Snap out of it! We need you!"

Dominic's vision cleared for a split second. He saw the CMC juggernaut mech charging toward him, its massive cannon aiming straight at him. He didn't have time to think. He couldn't afford to lose focus.

Fight. Survive. Destroy.

The words echoed in his mind, a command rather than a thought. His hands moved without his conscious input, the mech's arm lifting, the cannon charging. Dominic's body tensed, and before he realized what he had done, the Golden Titan fired.

The blast was precise, hitting the juggernaut in the chest. It crumpled, falling to the ground with an earth-shattering crash. But as the enemy mech exploded in a fiery bloom of light, Dominic felt a deep unease settle in his chest.

That wasn't him. It couldn't be.

His neural implant had taken control again.

For the first time, fear gripped Dominic's heart.

The battle seemed endless, the air thick with smoke and the scent of burning metal. UOP forces were pushing forward, but the CMC juggernauts continued to fight with brutal efficiency. Dominic's mech was a powerhouse on the battlefield, but now it was more than just a weapon of war. It was his prison.

Every time he tried to take control, the core inside him fought back, twisting his actions, clouding his mind. He had become a puppet, and the strings were being pulled by something far darker than he could understand.

"Dominic!" Lox's voice was frantic now. "We've got a new threat coming in! A fleet of CMC reinforcements!"

Dominic barely registered the words. His mind was far away, caught in the thrall of the implant's influence.

The hum in his skull had reached a fever pitch, overwhelming his senses. He barely heard Lox's orders over the noise, barely noticed the CMC's new fleet descending on them.

It was too late.

As more enemy mechs began to descend, Dominic's mech staggered, and for a brief moment, his vision completely blanked out. His mech's limbs twitched, erratic and uncontrolled, as if it had a mind of its own.

"No… no, not now…" Dominic whispered to himself, his voice barely audible.

His hands moved, but they weren't his hands anymore. The AI was overriding him, using his body like a tool, pushing him forward into a new battle he wasn't prepared for.

He had to stop it. He had to regain control.

"Dominic!" Lox yelled again. "We need you now—"

But it was too late.

The implant had won. And Dominic was no longer the man piloting the mech. The mech was piloting him.
