Chapter 14 - Curiosity Kills the Cat

I dashed through the trees, my breath coming in short, ragged gasps. My heart pounding against my chest as I tried to outrun the terror that pursued me.

Oh God, why me? I should have stayed back with my classmates when my intuition said to stay. I shouldn't have let my curiosity win...Sikara's warning.

The daylight didn't even help. The forest was dark and dense, the trees towering overhead, blocking out the light. Was the forest at the back of the school this huge?? Oh God! The ground was soft and muddy, making it difficult to run, but I pushed myself onward desperate to escape, to go back to the others. I bet no one cares where the 'Witch of Pineville' was.

To be safe. To be safe... was all my brain could think.

I could hear the sound of heavy footsteps behind me, getting closer and closer... Damn, this monster was fast! The more I ran, the more I could feel my legs growing tired. The forest seemed to go on forever, the trees never-ending. I could hear the branches rustling behind me, and I knew my pursuer was gaining on me. Jesus! How much farther do I have to run? I didn't know this forest behind the school was dense. I turned my head for a brief moment, and that's when I saw it - a pair of glowing red eyes, staring at me through the darkness. I let out a scream and ran even faster, my heart pounding in my chest. Suddenly, the ground gave way beneath me, and I tumbled into a deep pit.

I screamed.

Nobody was coming to help me. Nobody. What was I doing at the back of the school when everyone was busy eating at the cafeteria? Why did my curiosity have to act up again? And now I was about to get killed. I didn't know what that red eyes monster was but I knew death had already found me. Nobody cared if I was missing or not. I was sure their lives in the cafeteria were way much better than some witch who was about to die. And nobody would care if I was dead.

As I lay at the bottom of the pit, I could hear the footsteps getting closer and closer. I tried to scramble up the steep sides of the pit, but the earth kept sliding beneath me. Just a little more step and I would be out of the forest. But as usual, luck wasn't on my side. Just as I was about to give up, I saw a glint of metal out of the corner of my eye. There, half-buried in the dirt, was a small dagger. This was Wendy's. Because of my ability to be invincible, I notice things. I knew the secrets of everyone in this school. I knew what Wendy and her gang does. I know it all. To be honest, I knew the secrets of almost everyone in that school. Being invincible gave you that power.

With fear at the back of my heart, I grabbed the dagger and held it in front of me, trembling with fear. It's no use. This monster was way powerful, I could sense it.

Suddenly, a dark figure appeared at the edge of the pit. This monster was so fast that it caught up to me...so fast. As I stared up at the figure, I saw that it looked like a human but not human. This monster was far from human. Its skin is pale and dirty. Its eyes glowed red. More than what I saw earlier. Its hair was long and unkempt. His nails were equally long, dirty, and claw-like. And he was wearing a hospital gown.

What the fuck was this? Did a secret lab let an experiment of some kind go wild?

As it let out a low, guttural growl, I saw it. A fang was replaced where the teeth were supposed to be. Oh my God! This wasn't some ordinary monster. This was the same monster Aunt Gracie always told us. Many years ago, this land belonged to a certain creature. The Creatures of the night were what they called them. These Creatures were always known to lurk around, looking for whom and what to devour, to sink their teeth in to replenish their old dead hearts.

The war ended with a pact. A pact that involved the humans fulfilling the needs of these creatures in turn for a peaceful co-existence between the both. The Creatures won't attack any humans and the government would give them what they want. And that was The human Blood.!

This was a fucking Vampire!!! I was going to die in the hands of a fucking vampire!

I screamed in terror as the vampire reached down and grabbed me by my arm, pulling me up out of the pit. Struggling was of no use. The creature was far too strong. It dragged me deeper into the forest, and I could feel my strength fading. My body was also bruised from too much manhandling. Tears stained the corner of my eyes. I couldn't even plead for it to let me because the eyes of this vampire said it all. It was thirsty and I was just the perfect meal for this guy all. After all, I happen to mysteriously find my way into his hands all because I was curious.

Curiosity killed the cat...

That was how the world worked. The strong preyed on the weak.

The weak are meat the strong do eat

And right now, I was the weak girl inside a pit. I had no power whatsoever to fight for my life against this animal. I was dead.

The vampire continued dragging me deeper into the forest and then suddenly stopped and threw me against a tree as my back hit the tree hard. I yelped in pain. I tried standing up but it was of no use. I was sure my backbones were broken. I managed to sit, my back rested on the tree. Suddenly my eyes were met with its deathly glowing red eyes.

The vampire lunged towards me with lightning speed and sank its fang into my neck. I tried to fight it off but it was obvious that I was just struggling in vain. This monster was by far stronger than me. And in this part of the world, it was natural for the strong to prey on the weak. It is obvious knowledge that a predator is typically stronger than a prey who is weak. The predator gains power and sustenance from the prey, while the prey suffers and loses its life. And right now, I was about to lose my life.

I felt a sharp pain, and then a strange numbness spread throughout my body. The world around me began to blur, and I felt myself slipping into unconsciousness. Am I going to die in the hands of a dirty vampire at the back of my school? Just then, all Sikara's warnings came flashing so suddenly. Was this the sudden death she warned me about?

You didn't take her seriously and now you're going to be suffering the consequence—DEATH.

I felt like I was floating, and everything around me was becoming fuzzy and indistinct. All I could hear was a muffled, indistinguishable noise, like voices whispering in the distance.

"We've seen him!" My eyes were still closed and unresponsive. Then I hear the rough padding of footsteps coming closer. I was not sure who was approaching, but I can feel a sense of dread building in my chest.

"What the fuck have you done, you monster! The General is going to kill me" Another voice said with ragged breath.

"And what the fuck have you done" At this point, I don't know if it was another person speaking or if it was the same voice as the first. I couldn't differentiate nor I couldn't focus on anything, all I knew was that I just wanted to sleep. My body felt heavy, and I couldn't fight it anymore.

"Restrain and stake him where it wouldn't kill him. We have to leave here, Right now, I have to take care of this and make it look like...Let's not make this scene more unusual than it is"

Who were these people and what were they doing here? What did they plan to do to me? I need to try to take a look at their faces. I need to know who they were and what they looked like. What good would that do? You're already dead Sara.

Just a little peep, please. I slowly opened my eyes and I saw a glint of metal in the hands of one man whose face was blurry. He was holding a gun which was pointed at me. I let out a choked cry. Just then, I heard the deafening sound of a gunshot, followed by a searing pain ripping through my chest. Everything immediately went black, and I felt myself falling into a bottomless void. Feeling myself fading away, I later the sleep come in. It was comfortable.

My body was cold and numb, I couldn't move, I couldn't do anything. My eyes unconsciously closed and reopened, I saw the unknown men who killed me by shooting at me to cover up the fact that a vampire bit me. What would become of me now? Would I die? Is this how my life would end? Oh God, please give me a second chance. Ashley Montagu, said, 'The idea is to die young as late as possible' but here I am, dying young as early as possible.

Don't give up, Sara. Fight!

What was I fighting for? There was no chance of surviving this. A vampire bite and a gunshot straight through my chest. It is a wonder that I am still alive to think about all these things.

Suddenly, I heard a voice, clear and sharp, like a bell ringing in the darkness in my head. Someone else was shouting. The voice sounded like it was coming from a long way away, but it was growing louder and louder. Just then it stopped.

"Let's quickly get out of here Balor"

Was it that someone other than me was in this forest with these monsters? Did they hear the gun go off? God, I hope so. My ragged breaths suddenly became distant and I could gradually feel myself slipping away into unconsciousness.

This was it. Nobody was gonna come save me. My corpse wouldn't be found and I would stay rotten in this forest beside this hell hole of a school.

My life was just fucking great! Be dead Sara Pier...Be gone! Fuck!
