Friday arrived faster than Sophie expected. By the time the final bell rang, the school buzzed with excitement for the basketball game against Ridgewood High. Sophie spent the day trying to avoid the nervous energy that seemed to infect everyone.
"Ready for tonight?" Jason asked as he walked her to the parking lot after school.
"As ready as I'll ever be," Sophie said with a small laugh.
Jason chuckled. "Trust me, it'll be fun. We'll meet up before the game starts. Rachel and I saved you a seat."
Sophie nodded, trying to ignore the butterflies that had taken residence in her stomach.

The gymnasium was packed by the time Sophie arrived. The stands were a sea of blue and gold, the school colors, and the energy in the air was electric. Sophie spotted Rachel waving frantically and made her way over.
"Hey! Over here!" Rachel called.
Sophie slid into the seat next to her, and Jason appeared moments later, carrying a tray of drinks and snacks.
"Thought you might need this," Jason said, handing Sophie a soda.
"Thanks," Sophie said, grateful for the distraction.
The game started with a loud buzzer, and the crowd erupted into cheers. Sophie watched as the players moved across the court with precision and speed. She didn't know much about basketball, but even she could tell it was an intense game.
"Come on, Ridgewood's defense is weak on the left!" Jason muttered under his breath, leaning forward.
Rachel laughed. "You're not even playing, Jason. Relax."
"I can't help it," Jason said. "It's a big game."

As the game progressed, Sophie found herself surprisingly invested. The crowd's energy was contagious, and she cheered along with everyone else when their team scored.
With only a few minutes left on the clock, the score was tied. The tension in the gym was palpable.
Sophie glanced at Jason. He was completely focused on the game, his jaw set and his hands clenched on his knees. For a moment, she saw a different side of him—one that was deeply passionate and determined.
When the buzzer sounded, signaling the end of the game, the crowd erupted into cheers. Their team had won by a single point. Sophie found herself swept up in the celebration, high-fiving Rachel and laughing at Jason's triumphant shout.

After the game, the three of them headed to a nearby diner to grab a late-night snack. The booth they chose was cozy, and the smell of fries and burgers filled the air.
"That was incredible," Sophie said, her cheeks still flushed from the excitement.
"I told you it would be fun," Jason said, grinning.
Rachel smirked. "You were so into it, Jason. I think you scared the kid sitting in front of us."
Jason laughed. "What can I say? I'm passionate about basketball."
Sophie smiled, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. For the first time in a long time, she felt like she truly belonged.
