The diner buzzed with laughter and chatter as Sophie, Jason, and Rachel shared stories and jokes over plates of fries and milkshakes. The warmth of the evening, the camaraderie, and the lingering energy from the game made it a night Sophie would never forget.
"I can't believe how invested I got in the game," Sophie admitted, popping a fry into her mouth. "I didn't even understand half the rules."
Jason smirked. "It's all about the spirit. You don't need to know every detail to enjoy it."
Rachel leaned back in the booth, her gaze flitting between the two of them. "Well, look at you, Soph. You're officially part of the team's fan club."
Sophie rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress her grin. "Don't push it."
As the night wound down, Jason glanced at his watch. "It's getting late. Let's head out."
They stepped outside into the cool night air. The streets were quiet, and the faint sound of crickets filled the space between them. Rachel gave them a mischievous smile. "I'm taking the long way home. You two behave yourselves."
Before Sophie could respond, Rachel had disappeared down the sidewalk, leaving her alone with Jason.
"Guess I'm walking you home," Jason said with a shrug.
Sophie glanced at him, her heart doing a little flip. "Sure. If you don't mind."

The walk was quiet at first, the only sounds coming from their footsteps and the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. Sophie couldn't shake the feeling that something was lingering in the air between them—something unspoken.
Jason finally broke the silence. "So… about your painting."
Sophie tensed. "What about it?"
"It was incredible," Jason said, his voice soft. "I mean, I knew you were talented, but that was… something else."
Sophie felt her cheeks warm. "Thanks. It was personal, I guess."
Jason nodded. "I could tell. That's what made it so powerful."
They stopped at a small park along the way, the swings and slides bathed in the glow of a nearby streetlamp. Jason gestured for Sophie to sit on one of the swings, and he took the one next to hers.
For a moment, they simply sat there, the gentle creak of the swings filling the silence. Then Jason spoke again.
"You know, Soph, I wasn't always like this."
Sophie glanced at him. "Like what?"
"Confident. Outgoing. The guy everyone seems to know." Jason let out a small laugh. "I used to be this awkward, quiet kid who never knew how to talk to people. I guess I still am, in some ways."
Sophie smiled. "I think everyone feels that way sometimes."
Jason turned to her, his expression serious. "You've changed too. Since the first day I saw you, there's something different about you now. You're… stronger."
Sophie looked down at her hands, her chest tightening. "I'm just trying to figure things out."
Jason nodded. "Aren't we all?"
He hesitated for a moment before adding, "I like who you're becoming, Sophie. I hope you see that too."
The words hung in the air between them, heavy with meaning. Sophie felt a lump in her throat but managed a small smile. "Thanks, Jason."
As they walked the rest of the way to her house, Sophie couldn't help but replay his words in her mind.
