Chapter 21 - 21 The return

Darkness surrounded me, a thick, suffocating fog that swallowed every ounce of light, leaving me trapped in an endless void. I couldn't feel my body, couldn't tell if I was breathing, but I was aware of something—someone—moving in the depths of this nothingness.

Elias.

His voice echoed through the blackness, soft and distant at first, like a whisper carried on the wind. The sound was comforting, yet filled with an urgency that made my heart race.

"Don't leave me, not now," his voice pleaded, and it sounded like it was coming from everywhere and nowhere at once. I could feel the space between us closing, the pull of his words like a magnet drawing me in.

I tried to respond, but my mouth wouldn't move, my tongue wouldn't work. I couldn't scream, couldn't say his name. The silence in the dark was deafening.

But then, a shift. A sudden change in the air.

A light flickered, faint and barely noticeable at first, but it grew. The darkness seemed to recoil, shrinking away from the light like a living thing trying to escape. A flicker of warmth, then another, and finally the faintest sound—the softest footstep in the dark.

I felt it before I saw it.

The presence of Elias, stronger than it had been before, more real, more tangible. My pulse quickened, a sense of relief washing over me, but with it came a deep, gnawing fear. Something was different.

"Elias?" I called out, my voice trembling in the stillness.

There was a pause, a deep silence, before a faint glow appeared ahead of me. It was small at first, like a lantern flickering in the distance, but it was enough to guide me toward him.

And then I saw him.

His figure was still translucent, a faint shimmer of a man in the dark, but something had changed. He was more solid, his outline sharper, the glow around him brighter. It was like he was coming back to life, piece by piece, his body reforming as if it were never really gone.

I reached for him, my heart racing as I stepped closer, my feet finding solid ground beneath me for the first time in what felt like forever.

"Elias?" I repeated, this time with more certainty.

His eyes met mine, and for a moment, I was sure I saw something like pain in them—something raw, something that spoke of loss and longing. But then it shifted, and I saw a flicker of hope in his gaze.

"I'm not leaving you," Elias murmured, his voice stronger now, more real. "I can feel my body again."

I took another step toward him, my pulse racing with the realization. He was becoming more corporeal. The air around us shimmered with an energy that was almost magnetic. The coldness in the room had started to lift, replaced with a heat that radiated from him, like the warmth of a sun just beginning to rise.

His body solidified even more. His fingers twitched, like they were testing the feeling of touch again. Slowly, tentatively, he reached out, his hand brushing against mine. The contact sent a shock of warmth through my entire being. It was like I could feel the pulse of his heart—alive again, after all this time.

"Elias, how?" I whispered, my voice shaking with wonder.

"I don't know," he said, his eyes never leaving mine. His voice was filled with awe, disbelief. "I thought I was lost—trapped, forever. But... maybe I never truly left. Maybe part of me has always been here, with you. And now, it's like I'm... coming back."

I felt the warmth of his presence wrapping around me, like a blanket, like an anchor in the storm of confusion and fear that had consumed me. I looked at him, the outlines of his face becoming clearer, the sharpness of his jawline, the dark tousle of his hair.

He was almost whole again. Almost... alive.

"Do you feel it too?" he asked, his voice low, as if testing the reality of what was happening.

I nodded, my own emotions swirling in a dizzying whirlwind of hope and disbelief. I reached up, my fingers trembling as I touched his cheek, finally feeling the warmth of his skin against mine, solid and real.

"I can feel you," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. "You're here. You're really here."

His hand found my waist, pulling me closer, and I could feel the heat of his body against mine. The air around us seemed to hum with energy, vibrating with the force of what was happening.

Elias's eyes were wide, but his lips curved into a slow, tentative smile, one that sent my heart fluttering in my chest.

"I never thought this would be possible," he said quietly. "I thought I was too far gone. But with you... I'm coming back. I'm not just a memory anymore."

His voice was stronger now, steady with the confidence that had been missing when he was a ghost. The power of his presence was growing, filling the space around us. The chill that had plagued the room was finally dissipating, replaced by a warmth that made the air feel thick and alive.

"Elias..." I murmured, the tears threatening to spill from my eyes as I saw the reality of it. The man I loved, the man who had been lost to me, was coming back. The ghost of him was slowly being replaced by the real, solid man who had once held me in his arms.

"I'm not leaving you," he repeated, his voice firm now, with the weight of a promise. "Not now. Not ever again."

He pulled me closer, his lips finding mine in a kiss that was gentle at first but grew in intensity. It was different this time. It wasn't just the kiss of a lover—it was the kiss of a man returning to life, to existence. His warmth surged through me, filling the emptiness inside, and for a moment, it felt like nothing else in the world mattered.

We pulled back for a breath, both of us struggling to comprehend what was happening.

"I don't know how this is happening," Elias whispered, his voice thick with awe. "But I know one thing."

"What?" I asked, my heart still racing in my chest, my pulse quickening with each passing second.

"I'm here," he said, his hand resting over his heart. "I'm really here."

And as his words hung in the air between us, I realized something—this was no longer just about survival. It was about rediscovering the love that had been torn away. The love that now, somehow, had the power to bring him back to me.

And with that thought, everything shifted. The room, the air, the very world around us. It was like a new beginning, one where the impossible had become real, where death had been pushed back by the strength of our bond.

I wasn't alone anymore.

And neither was Elias.

For the first time in what felt like forever, I finally let myself believe that this nightmare might truly be over.
