Chereads / Void Sovereign: Rise of the Cursed God / Chapter 35 - Guardian of the Rift

Chapter 35 - Guardian of the Rift

The wilderness grew darker as Ravok and Lara approached the next Void Fragment. The faint glow in the distance pulsed erratically, its chaotic energy spreading a subtle hum through the air. The terrain around them shifted from rocky paths to jagged fissures, with glowing veins of energy coursing beneath the surface.

Lara glanced at Ravok, who was uncharacteristically quiet. His crimson eyes were fixed on the horizon, his thoughts clearly occupied. "You're thinking about the next chain, aren't you?"

"Always," Ravok replied without looking at her. "Each chain I break weakens their control. Each fragment I claim brings me closer to my goal."

"And closer to them noticing," Lara added. "We're already playing with fire. How much more before they send something we can't handle?"

Ravok finally turned to her, a faint smirk on his lips. "If they had anything that could stop me, they would've sent it already."

The Rift Unleashed

As they reached the site of the Void Fragment, the air grew heavier. The fragment rested at the center of a massive crater, its swirling energy radiating an ominous light. Unlike the previous fragments, this one seemed unstable, its chaotic power rippling outward in unpredictable bursts.

But they weren't alone.

A figure emerged from the shadows, stepping into the light of the fragment. He was clad in sleek black armor that seemed to absorb the surrounding energy, his presence exuding a chilling authority. His face was obscured, but his voice carried a weight that demanded attention.

"You've come far, Ravok," the figure said. "But this is where your journey ends."

Ravok's expression didn't change as his Void-infused dagger materialized in his hand. "And who might you be?"

"I am Kaelith, the Voidbound Guardian," the man replied. "Tasked with maintaining balance and preventing those like you from upsetting it."

"Balance?" Lara scoffed, stepping beside Ravok with her daggers drawn. "You're standing next to chaos incarnate. Doesn't seem very balanced to me."

Kaelith's head tilted slightly, his tone cold. "Chaos must be contained, not unleashed. You threaten that balance, and for that, you must be stopped."

The Battle of the Rift

Kaelith moved with a speed that defied the eye, his blade—a jagged weapon forged from Void energy—clashing against Ravok's dagger in a burst of shadow and light. Each strike sent shockwaves through the crater, the unstable ground cracking further beneath their feet.

"You wield the Void as if it obeys you," Kaelith said, his strikes precise and unrelenting. "But it is not yours to command."

"I don't command it," Ravok replied, deflecting a powerful blow. "I become it."

Lara circled the battlefield, searching for an opening. Kaelith's movements were fluid and deliberate, giving her no easy opportunities. "This guy's tough," she muttered, narrowly avoiding a blast of energy from his blade. "What's the plan?"

"Keep him busy," Ravok said, his tone calm despite the chaos. "I'll finish this."

Kaelith's attacks grew faster, each strike more calculated than the last. His blade cut through the air with precision, forcing Ravok to draw deeply on his Void energy to counter. The chaotic power coiled around him like a living shield, clashing violently with Kaelith's controlled movements.

"You fight well," Kaelith said, his voice devoid of emotion. "But you lack discipline. Chaos is your undoing."

Ravok smirked faintly. "Chaos is your end."

Turning the Tide

Lara finally saw her chance. As Kaelith focused on Ravok, she darted in, her daggers aimed at the seams in his armor. Her blades struck true, finding their mark and forcing Kaelith to falter. The brief hesitation was all Ravok needed.

Channeling his Void energy, Ravok unleashed a wave of chaotic power that engulfed Kaelith, destabilizing his form. The Voidbound Guardian staggered, his armor cracking as the energy consumed him.

"You cannot… control the Void," Kaelith said, his voice faltering but defiant.

"I don't need to control it," Ravok replied coldly. "I just need to destroy you."

With a final, devastating strike, Ravok drove his dagger into Kaelith's chest. The Guardian let out a distorted cry as his form dissolved into the swirling chaos, leaving only silence in his wake.

Breaking the Third Chain

The Void Fragment pulsed violently, its energy lashing out in unpredictable bursts. Ravok approached it, the whispers in his mind growing louder and more insistent.

"Take it. Break the chain. Become whole."

He placed his hand on the fragment, its chaotic energy wrapping around him like tendrils of shadow. The divine resistance within the fragment was stronger than before, pushing back with all its might. But Ravok's determination was unshakable.

The fragment cracked, its glow dimming as the third chain within Ravok's soul shattered. The surge of power was immediate, coursing through him like a flood and deepening his connection to the Void. The whispers subsided, their tone now one of quiet satisfaction.

Lara approached cautiously, her expression a mix of awe and concern. "That looked… intense. You good?"

Ravok turned to her, his crimson eyes glowing brighter than before. "Another chain broken. Another step closer."

"To what?" Lara asked, though she already knew the answer.

"To freedom," Ravok said simply.

The Road Ahead

As they left the crater, the faint glow of the fragment fading behind them, Ravok's mind was already on the next step. The power he had gained was immense, but the journey was far from over. The remaining chains would be harder to break, and the Pantheon would not remain idle.

Lara glanced at him, her smirk returning. "You know, for someone who just defeated a Void guardian and shattered another chain, you don't seem too happy."

"There's still more to do," Ravok replied, his voice steady. "This was only a piece of what's coming."

"Good," Lara said, falling into step beside him. "Because I'd hate for this to get boring."

The two disappeared into the wilderness, the echoes of their battle fading into silence. But the war against the Pantheon was only beginning, and Ravok's rise was far from over.
