Chereads / Void Sovereign: Rise of the Cursed God / Chapter 36 - The Chains of Chaos

Chapter 36 - The Chains of Chaos

The wilderness was eerily silent, the stillness broken only by the faint hum of Void energy in the distance. Ravok moved with purpose, his crimson eyes fixed on the faint glow of the next Void Fragment. Each step he took felt heavier, the weight of the broken chains within him growing with every fragment claimed.

Lara followed closely, her daggers at the ready. "You've been awfully quiet since the last fight," she said, her tone casual but her sharp gaze betraying her concern. "What's going on in that chaotic head of yours?"

"The chains," Ravok replied, his voice cold and distant. "They're breaking faster, but the cost is growing."

"Cost?" Lara raised an eyebrow. "You mean those whispers in your head? Or is this something worse?"

Ravok didn't answer immediately. His gaze remained fixed on the horizon. "Both."

The Fragment's Call

As they approached the site of the next Void Fragment, the air grew colder, and a strange tension settled over the landscape. The ground was cracked and uneven, glowing veins of energy coursing beneath its surface. The fragment itself pulsed erratically, its energy more unstable than any they had encountered before.

"This one feels... different," Lara said, her voice edged with unease. "Bigger. Angrier."

"It's stronger," Ravok said, his tone calm but resolute. "And the stronger the fragment, the more resistance we'll face."

"That's comforting," Lara muttered, gripping her daggers tightly. "Let's hope resistance doesn't mean another god-tier glowing knight."

Ravok smirked faintly but said nothing as they stepped closer to the fragment.

The Guardian Emerges

Before they could reach the fragment, a low, guttural growl echoed through the clearing. The air rippled, and a massive form emerged from the shadows. It was a Void Beast, its hulking frame covered in jagged, shifting armor that glowed faintly with chaotic energy. Its eyes burned like twin voids, and its every step shook the ground.

"Well, that's new," Lara said, her tone dry. "Big, ugly, and glowing. Just our luck."

The beast let out a deafening roar, its massive claws tearing into the ground as it charged toward them. Ravok stepped forward, his dagger materializing in his hand.

"Keep it distracted," Ravok said calmly. "I'll handle the fragment."

"Distracted?" Lara scoffed, already moving to flank the beast. "Sure, I'll just wave my daggers at it and hope for the best."

Battle with the Void Beast

The Void Beast's attacks were relentless, each swing of its claws creating shockwaves that sent debris flying. Lara darted around it, her agility keeping her just out of reach. She struck at its legs and joints, but the beast's chaotic armor absorbed most of the damage.

"This thing's tougher than it looks!" Lara shouted, dodging another swipe.

Ravok moved toward the fragment, the beast's chaotic energy lashing out at him like tendrils of shadow. His Void-infused dagger sliced through the energy, but the resistance was stronger than he had anticipated.

The beast turned its attention to Ravok, sensing his approach to the fragment. With a roar, it lunged toward him, its claws aimed to crush. Ravok raised his dagger, channeling a surge of Void energy that met the beast's attack head-on. The clash sent ripples of energy through the clearing, momentarily staggering the creature.

"Keep it busy," Ravok said sharply, glancing at Lara.

"Working on it!" Lara shot back, leaping onto the beast's back and driving her daggers into the gaps in its armor. The beast roared in pain, thrashing wildly to throw her off.

Breaking the Fourth Chain

Ravok reached the fragment, its chaotic energy pulsing violently as he placed his hand on its surface. The whispers in his mind grew louder, overlapping in a cacophony of commands and warnings.

"Break it. Take it. Consume it."

The fragment resisted, its divine core flaring brightly as it fought against Ravok's intrusion. He gritted his teeth, pouring more of his energy into the connection. The ground trembled, cracks spreading outward as the fragment's defenses began to crumble.

The Void Beast let out one final roar, its form destabilizing as Ravok's power overwhelmed the fragment. With a deafening crack, the fragment shattered, and the beast dissolved into shadow.

Ravok felt the fourth chain within him break, the surge of power flooding his body. The whispers subsided, their tone shifting to one of quiet satisfaction.

Aftermath

Lara approached cautiously, her breathing heavy from the fight. "You okay? That looked... intense."

Ravok turned to her, his crimson eyes glowing brighter than before. "Another chain is gone. The gods will feel it."

"Good," Lara said, wiping sweat from her brow. "Let them. But what about you? You're looking more... Void-y every time you do this."

Ravok didn't respond immediately. He looked down at his hands, the faint glow of chaotic energy lingering on his skin. "It's the price of power. And I'll pay it."

Lara smirked faintly. "Well, as long as you're not turning into that thing we just fought, I think we're fine."

The Journey Continues

As they left the site of the fragment, the oppressive energy began to fade. The wilderness stretched before them once more, its silence broken only by the faint rustle of wind through the trees.

"The chains are breaking," Ravok said, his voice low but resolute. "The Pantheon will come. They can't ignore this much longer."

"Let them come," Lara said, falling into step beside him. "We've handled everything they've thrown at us so far."

Ravok allowed himself a faint smirk as they continued their journey. The war was far from over, but with each chain broken, he was one step closer to his ultimate goal: to rise above the gods and reshape the multiverse in his image.
