Chereads / Void Sovereign: Rise of the Cursed God / Chapter 22 - The Convergence’s Edge

Chapter 22 - The Convergence’s Edge

The glowing bridge stretched infinitely into the void, its surface thrumming with energy that resonated in Ravok's core. Each step forward was deliberate, echoing across the silence like the tolling of a distant bell. But this wasn't silence born of peace—it was the pregnant quiet of something vast and unseen, waiting.

Lara glanced around, her movements tense but measured, her daggers resting ready in her hands. "This place feels… wrong. Like it's alive and watching us."

"It is," Ravok replied, his crimson eyes fixed on the horizon.

Her frown deepened. "And what happens when it decides we're not welcome?"

Ravok's faint smirk didn't reach his eyes. "It already has."

The Convergence Gate

The bridge ended abruptly, revealing a vast expanse dominated by the Convergence Gate. Six towering pillars circled a swirling vortex of chaotic energy. The pillars, etched with runes that shifted constantly, pulsed faintly, as if breathing. The vortex itself twisted violently, its movements erratic and unnatural, the sound it emitted more felt than heard—a deep, resonant hum that vibrated in their bones.

"That doesn't look safe," Lara muttered, her voice carrying a sharp edge.

"It's not," Ravok said, stepping closer. "The Convergence Gate isn't a bridge. It's a test—a fracture between dimensions where the Void and the Pantheon's order clash."

"Wonderful," Lara said, tightening her grip on her daggers. "And if we fail the test?"

"We don't fail," Ravok replied, his voice calm but resolute.

The runes on the pillars flared suddenly, their light intensifying as the vortex surged. The oppressive silence shattered as the Void's whispers returned, louder and sharper, filling the air with fragmented commands.

"They watch. They wait. Prove your dominion."

---

The Gatekeeper

From the vortex emerged a massive figure of chaotic energy. Its form was humanoid but unstable, flickering and shifting like a fire barely contained. Its glowing eyes burned like twin stars, locking onto Ravok and Lara with a malice that transcended words.

"I am Daevar, Gatekeeper of the Convergence," the figure intoned, its voice booming like the clash of distant storms. "None may pass without proving their worth."

Lara instinctively moved closer to Ravok, her stance guarded. "Big, glowing, and pissed. Let me guess—this isn't going to end in a handshake."

Ravok's smirk deepened, his gaze unwavering. "The Void doesn't negotiate."

With a single motion, Daevar raised an arm, and the air trembled. Spears of energy materialized around it, each crackling with destructive force. In a blinding cascade, the Gatekeeper hurled them toward its challengers.

---

The First Clash

Ravok raised his hand, a barrier of Void energy forming just in time to intercept the spears. The collision sent ripples of force across the bridge, splintering the edges and sending shards of light scattering into the abyss. Lara darted to the side, narrowly evading a spear that left a scorched trail in its wake.

"This thing doesn't mess around," Lara shouted, circling to Ravok's flank. "Got a plan?"

"Find its core," Ravok replied, his voice steady despite the chaos. "Every storm has an eye."

Daevar surged forward, its massive limbs crashing down with enough force to shake the bridge. Ravok countered with a blast of concentrated Void energy, striking the Gatekeeper's chest. The attack staggered it momentarily, but its form reassembled almost instantly.

"This isn't just a storm," Lara said, slashing at the energy tendrils lashing out toward her. "It's a storm that fights back."

"And we'll make it stop," Ravok said, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed Daevar's movements.

Unraveling the Gatekeeper

Ravok's gaze shifted to the pillars surrounding the vortex. Their runes pulsed in sync with Daevar's energy, glowing brighter with every strike it delivered. The connection was clear.

"The pillars," Ravok said sharply. "They're feeding it. Break the runes."

"Of course, it's the giant glowing magic rocks," Lara muttered, sprinting toward the nearest pillar. "Why is it never easy?"

She leapt onto the pillar, her daggers flashing as she struck at the shifting runes. They resisted her attacks, flaring angrily and pushing back with bursts of energy. But Lara persisted, chipping away at the connection. As the runes dimmed, Daevar faltered, its form flickering and unstable.

"One down!" Lara shouted, leaping off the pillar as it cracked. "How many more?"

"Five," Ravok replied, parrying a spear aimed for his chest. "Move faster."

---

A Desperate Push

The Gatekeeper roared, its energy surging violently. It directed its full power at Lara, massive tendrils lashing out to destroy her before she could reach the next pillar. Ravok intercepted the attack, his Void energy forming a barrier that absorbed the strike.

"Keep going," Ravok commanded, his voice cold and precise. "I'll handle it."

Lara sprinted toward the next pillar, her movements a blur as she evaded tendrils and shattered the glowing runes. With each pillar she broke, Daevar's form became more erratic, its attacks growing less coordinated.

Ravok seized the moment, unleashing a wave of Void energy that struck Daevar's core directly. The Gatekeeper staggered, its energy collapsing inward with each strike.

---

The Final Pillar

As Lara reached the final pillar, Daevar let out a deafening roar. Its form surged with unstable energy, and a massive wave of force erupted from its core, aiming to obliterate her. Ravok reacted instantly, channeling every ounce of Void energy into a shield that deflected the blast.

"Now!" Ravok shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos.

Lara leapt onto the pillar, her daggers plunging into the last set of runes. With a final, decisive strike, she shattered the connection. The pillar crumbled, and the Gatekeeper's form collapsed in on itself.

Ravok moved swiftly, his dagger glowing with concentrated Void energy. With one precise strike, he pierced Daevar's core. The Gatekeeper exploded in a cascade of light, its energy dissipating into nothingness.

The Path Forward

As the Gatekeeper faded, the runes on the remaining pillars aligned, their light forming a new bridge that led directly into the vortex. The oppressive energy lifted slightly, replaced by the triumphant whispers of the Void.

"The gate is yours. Take the war to them."

Ravok stepped forward, his expression calm but resolute. "This is the first step. The Pantheon is waiting."

Lara sheathed her daggers, her breaths heavy but steady. "And we're just walking into their trap?"

"We're not walking," Ravok replied, stepping onto the bridge. "We're marching."

Without hesitation, he disappeared into the swirling light. Lara hesitated for a moment, muttering under her breath before following.

The light consumed them, and the Convergence awaited.
