Chapter 10 - Purgatory

In between Kelphine and Dalphimare a human appeared sleeping on the ground with a pillow and a sheet. The human looked like a boy with black hair sucking his thumb. The blanket was blue with images of clouds and the pillow was green like grass with images of sheep sleeping. Kelphine looked at Dalphimare and whispered to him that's not him. Dalphamire looked exhausted and whispered back "He will have to do it." The two of them slowly moved closer to the boy to grab him. As they reached for the boy's arms he had vanished. The group looked around seeing that the boy was now suspended in midair still sleeping. The group could now see the boy wearing Pajamas that had the images of sheep jumping over fences. Kelphine and Dalphimare flew up trying to grab the kid, but the kid moved so fast it seemed like he was vanishing. The boy had his eyes closed and snored the entire time they tried to grab the kid.

Finally, the boy stood up in the air and grabbed his blanket and pillow, yawning wondering where he was. "I don't want to fight." The boy said stuffing his blanket in his pillow staring down the group.

Momo stepped up and said, "We don't want to fight you. We need your help." The boy looked at Momo as if she wasn't the one he was talking to.

"Kelphine what are these creatures talking to me?" The boy asked, still looking at the group.

"We are here to help them." Kelphine answered.

"Dalphimare this is your doing? You must know brother that these creatures aren't playthings. Master will be displeased if any of them are injured by us." The boy's eyes seemed to turn at Dalphimares side.

"He is trapped, and these creatures are here to help us." Dalphimare answered.

"Purgatory?" The boy asked.

"Yes" Kelphine answered.

"I see they have the books." The boy floated over to Momo and stared into her eyes. "She has the eyes of life in her. You must go to Dalphimare." The boy looked around at the group and moved to T. "You seek chaos and power go to Kelphine." The boy once more began looking into the group and saw a man, that man was Pops. "You have balance in your blood but have not unlocked the potential. You must come with me." The three of them stood by the books and began reading the incantations. As they began reciting the incantation one seemed to be reading fast. Kelphine spoke to T telling him to slow down. The spell needs to be recited at the same time. Gale asked Dalphamire why they couldn't recite the spells themselves. Dalphamire said to Gale "It is a spell that can only be done by your kind. You see you are all mortal. While we are immortal. Our master created us to be defeatable in due time but he is in trouble." The boy looked at Dalphamire shocked.

"MASTER CAN NOT BE IN TROUBLE! HE IS POWERFUL!" The boy yelled. Kelphine raised his voice to the boy. "YOU WILL BEHAVE!" The boy quietly floated back to Pops. They began reciting the incantation again and this time a rip at the center of the guilds Town began to spring open. Dalphimare looked at the group and said "This will be a good time to tell you that once this portal is fully open you will have access to this location forever. You don't need to worry about creatures breaking through the portal to enter your guild. This portal will take you to the safest place in purgatory called the town of rifts. You will see palace guards at every rift entrance. These guards will not allow anyone that has gone through one rift into another. If you have a guild ID for one guild you may take the guild entrance but other than that they will stop, you and kill you if you try to put up a fight. The guards will direct you to your own rift if needed. Be very careful we will meet with you at a later time." Dalphine, Kelphine, and the boy left through the rift that had been opened.

Pops looked around at the group suggesting they follow the three. The group all agreed silently and began pursuing the three people. When they all landed at the other end of the portal they saw a massive kingdom. The kingdom looked dull and Gray. the presence of the kingdom felt as though it was absent of life and death. Everyone that entered the kingdom felt depressed.

"What is this place?" Gale asked out loud. A gargoyle began hatching from its stone body that was protecting the entrance with a spear. It turned to look at Gale and answered to him that the place they were in was the town of Rifts in the kingdom of Varmada located in purgatory. Gale then asked the gargoyle what he was. The gargoyle responded by telling him he was a royal Guard whose job is to protect the portals from intruders. "We are also tasked to give information about players and locations and prices on their heads. But first we must warn a player about the dangers of Purgatory. First the creatures that live here are powerful but once defeated they will drop a leviathan coin. The image of the creature will appear on the coin indicating the wealth of the coin. Leviathans are worth 100 billion in your currency. Our shops will only take leviathan coins as currency, no gold." The gargoyle tossed his spear and passed the group to a goblin looking creature that looked as though he were trying to pick pocket Gale. The goblin creature ran off and disappeared in the dark. "You can transfer your currency with our banks at the shopping area located south of here towards the southwest gate. Second thing we must tell you, we highly recommend that you buy our compass from the shop. You will notice that the compasses from your world are going crazy." Everyone took out the compass they had and noticed that the compass wasn't just spinning wildly but the arrows were getting bent upward and downward. "Third and final thing is bounties." The group had a curious look on their faces. "This place is known to produce bounty hunters. These bounty hunters will be contracted to hunt any target from our list located at the entrance of all the gates. Each Gate will be different bounties. These bounties will be placed on creatures and players." The group looked at the gargoyle as though they needed him to repeat himself. "Yes, Players. These players have made a name for themselves by hunting and killing bounties. The players can pay off their bounties at the bounty clerks offices at any of the gates as long as there isn't an active group hunting them. Player bounties will be given to the clerks at the front gate. While the boards are for creature bounties. The only reason a player bounty will be up on the board is because they have a bounty that is more than one leviathan-leviathan coin."

A rift opened nearby, and the group saw Vale, the imposter that had infiltrated the Chosen One guild. "Show them this and they will help you." Vale gave a charm with multiple snakes carved around the edges to the group he was with. "Tell them you want him dead." There was a man in black that Vale seemed to trust to get the job done. He was huge as tall and big as an orc but any hint of what race this man is could not be seen. Vale walked through the portal irritated.

Larry asked the gargoyles how long that portal had been opened. The gargoyle said to Larry that he will only answer for twelve goblin Leviathan coins. The group began to realize that if they wanted information, they would need money. The gargoyle told them that if they wanted free information, they could only ask about how to get to locations around the city after the introduction. The group that Vale had left begun walking to the southwest entrance. Pops had disappeared from the group as Larry looked around. "Where is Pops?" Larry asked. Momo wrote on a piece of parchment that read: Burn after reading. He is following the other guild.

Larry took the piece of parchment and burned it with a lighter he created. Larry then proceeded to collect the ashes of the parchment in a vial that was filled in a liquid that turned from blue to orange. "I needed ashes to make a portion of flame resistance. Thank you.", said Larry. Momo nodded to Larry you're welcome. They all began to move to the Southwest to the shopping district looking for a bank. The world seemed to be filled with thieves and people who seemed lost. There were creatures in cages, some of them were demons saying that they would rather go back to hell than be in purgatory. The cages were being put into the carriages. Where are they going? Momo wondered as they began to leave towards the gate. "Poor souls." said a man standing by the entrance with a picture of a wolf howling at the moon. Whose clothing looked tattered and dirty. "They shouldn't have become bounty hunters." The man standing by the entrance looked at the group and spoke. "Welcome newcomers to the Howling Moon Inn. Where the meat is fresh and not at all humans." The man gave a sinister smile. The group looked at the man with a disgusted look. "I'm just playing around. We have everything here including humans, we are built to feed all works of life." The man's sinister smile was now even more unsettling. The group began to walk past the man. "We are willing to give our guests information for free for the first 7 nights." The group kept walking forward. "With free meals whatever you like…" The man began raising his voice as the group began to walk further and further. "You'll come back, they always come back!" the man yelled.

A sign dangling from the roof showed an image of all different currencies in the game. The group looked at the entrance and it was the most beautiful thing in the area they had seen. The bank was white and gilded and has golden gargoyles surrounding the entrances. The golden gargoyles were also located at every corner of the dodecagon roof. The group led by Momo began walking to the entrance. One of the gargoyles' eyes began staring them down. "Why is there so much security around this place?" Fred asked. "It's not like people can rob the place." Fred said as they entered the beautiful room that seemed like a high-end resort. "Actually, your kind can rob the place. It is the sole reason why we have so much security. That being said it its best not to try our gargoyles from the prince devison of the royal guards. Those that you have seen from the town of rifts are from the castle devison. The queens are ruby and the king's well you don't want to see that one. Yes, it is one guard for the king. `` The group turned their heads to see a clerk nearby speaking to them. "Well, I may assist you all?" the clerk asked.

The group asked the clerk how they could exchange the money they currently had to leviathan coins. The clerk smiled and said ``well we can offer the small end leviathan coins on this floor, The second floor is mid-tier coins and high-end coins will be located at the third level." the clerk stated.

"How much money could you transfer with this much money?" Gale put a pile of coins in front of the clerk's desk with a smile.

"20 thousand coins exactly well I can give you 20 imp coins or 2 Kobalt coins." the clerk smiled. Fred asked the clerk how much a goblin coin was worth, and the clerk said "The goblin coins off regular goblins are worth 50 thousand a piece. Those off a hobgoblin are worth 75 thousand a piece."

The group looked amazed at how expensive the place was and especially because it looked like a dump outside. The group collectively put all the money they had together and made about half a million. They got 10 goblin coins from the clerk. "We need 2 more goblin coins to get the information we want from the gargoyles." Will said. "That will be all of our money." Momo hastily mentioned. "We cannot spend all of our money without considering food and a place to rest. We can't overwork ourselves."

T added "We can't ask anyone anything without buying information. And we can't rely on players to give us information they could be working with Vale. We should check a bounty hunting clerk. We have no clue where Kelphine, Dalphamire, and the boy have gone." The group decided to go to the bounty hunting clerks to get some information about bounties. They proceeded to head over to the southwest entrance since it was the closest.

Walking through the shopping district the group felt like a set of eyes were following them. They whispered among each other seeking out whoever was looking at them. They looked around seeking for a person, but they could see a bunch of NPCs and no hint of a player. The group decided to split up and enter different shops to see if there was a specific person the person was looking for. Momo, T and Fred all entered a magic shop. Will, Robert, and Gale entered an armor and weapons shop. Larry pressed forward to the bounty hunter's office.

Momo, T, and Fred noticed that they still felt like they were being watched and kept a look at everything around them. They acted as though they were buying magical objects and equipment. While focusing on the door to see if any suspicious character was following them. Will, Robert, and Gale felt that they were still being watched but no player was in sight. They began looking at weapons and watching the entrance to see if anyone entered after them. Larry being a short character was able to move through the crowded areas with ease, but he also felt like he was being watched.

Larry took a turn at an alleyway and saw a man with a full beard. The man had a mask that covered his face from the nose up. He was wearing a white cloak and spoke in a tongue that only Larry could understand. "Your friend is nearby. He watches you as you attempt to save him but wishes you not to." The man said. "If you go out any further you will be hunted, and he will not be able to protect you. The friend you are looking for is at the…" The man looked around and said "Goodbye honey I'll talk to you soon." and disappeared. Pops was located at the end of the alley walking to Larry.

"Who was that?" Pops asked.

"That guy knew where Jay was. He was going to tell me, but I think you startled him." Larry answered. Pops looked over at Larry and asked where the others were. Larry explained what happened and how they felt like they were being watched. They went back to regroup with the rest of the group and explained to them what happened. They realized that around the time the guy had disappeared they stopped feeling like they were being watched.

Larry gave the message to the group and said that they should not head out of the City. He told them that Jay is most likely in the city and that he wouldn't be able to protect them the group had left. "The guy cut off either because Pops spooked him or someone in his area spooked him."

"The guy was speaking an ancient language in the game called purgatorianism. When you made your character Larry what did you select for your language?" Pops asked.

"Well Jay actually helped me out with it. He said to choose the Knowledge category and pick up to 15 languages. I basically know all of the languages except for mountain troll, dragonian, and Serpentine." said Larry. "Vale when he was acting as Jay gave me books to learn different languages to help spy on other players." Larry added

"Do you remember what Jay said you should pick?" Pops asked.

"Well, here's the thing I didn't see what Jay picked out for me." Larry said.

"Why does Jay do stupid things like this, he never tells anyone anything." Momo said out loud. Pops nodded his head in agreement with Momo.

"What Purgatorianism?" Robert asked.

"Have you not been listening, Robert?" Will asked, his voice irritated.

"I think he means where it comes from." Pops said. "In a book I read that there was a temple called the Soul of Purgatory. In this temple there were 12 people. Each one of them had a job. Eleven of them were known as the worshippers, the twelfth was known as Master. They all wore white robes and masks. The purgatorians believed that evil and good were not needed in the world. But one of the followers disagreed. They wanted to show that evil and good needed to be together for a world to be perfect. This follower took the life of the master which split the group…" The group seemed to stop walking and began listening to the story that pops had begun. "He became the new master and ruled purgatory until a baby was born from the Depths of the leviathan caves. This baby was said to be very powerful. When the baby grew stronger, he took the temple and became master. And the other one was left in the gray desert of purgatory. The new master left purgatory into another world in fear of the old master's disciples. The four horsemen and the 7 sins." Pops stopped since they realized what they had done.

"We helped the old master regain power." Gale said, frustrated. "To help Jay out who probably doomed us to begin with." Momo looked angry at Gale. she began yelling at him. "IF IT WASN'T FOR JAY, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE LASTED IN THIS DEATH GAME."

"Well, if it wasn't for Jay we wouldn't have been in this death game at all." Will said. "Any ways who are you to tell us about Jay."

"She's, his wife." Pops said. "Jay didn't tell us much about the game because he wanted us to enjoy it, and if any of you have a problem with Jay, you can take it up with me in the arena." Pops looked furious.

"You tink you stronk Pops." Robert said. "I die twice and still alive."

"You really are an idiot." Fred said to Robert.

"I have to agree with Fred." T said.

"You guys are going to team up against us!" Will yelled at them.

"Will you guys shut up." A voice said quietly from an alleyway. "You all realize your standing in a danger zone, right?" The voice rang in the ears of the group. The group looked at the alleyway and saw a faint image, a ghostly image of their friend Jay. "If you have a problem with me then leave. But for the rest of you that want to help me get out of this prison I need a favor." Jay's voice seemed to be fading. "Go to the howling moon… man will… find… location…" Jay's ghostly image disappeared. The Group looked at each other like they were going to throw down. Until a large beam of light erupted at the North.
