Chapter 4 - The First Fight

Master Ragnar was stunned for a moment, then burst out laughing. "Amazing! You really have an amazing talent, Kai Valerian!"

The other freshmen whispered in admiration. Zane, the dark-haired youth who had been staring at Kai with hostility, clenched his fists furiously.

"But," Master Ragnar continued in a serious tone, "talent alone is not enough. You must hone your skills with training and discipline." He looked at Kai sharply. "You must learn to control your power, Kai. Otherwise, it will control you."

Kai nodded. He understood what Master Ragnar meant. He should not be arrogant and should continue practicing to master his skills.

"Alright, that's enough training for today," Master Ragnar said. "You may rest."

The freshmen cheered and left the practice field. Kai and Leo walked together to the locker room.

"You did great, Kai!" praised Leo. "I didn't think you could fight evenly with Master Ragnar."

Kai smiled. "I'm just lucky."

"Don't be modest, Kai," Leo said. "You have incredible talent. I'm sure you'll become the greatest swordsman in Aevonia."

Kai laughed. "Thanks, Leo."

Suddenly, Lysander walked up to them. He gave Kai a challenging look.

"Don't get excited, Kai Valerian," Lysander said. "You may be able to defeat Master Ragnar, but you won't be able to defeat me."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? We'll see."

"I challenge you to a duel," Lysander said. "Tomorrow, in the main arena. Do you dare?"

Kai smiled. "Of course. I accept your challenge."

Lysander grinned. "Good. See you tomorrow, Kai Valerian." He turned and left, leaving Kai and Leo looking at each other.

"Are you sure, Kai?" asked Leo in a worried tone. "Lysander is very strong. He's already reached Vanguard level."

Kai nodded. "I'm sure. I will not back down from a challenge." He stared at Lysander's departure with a determined gaze. He had to defeat Lysander, not only to prove his worth, but also to protect himself and his friends from the mysterious young man.

The next day, Kai woke up feeling excited. He couldn't wait to face the duel against Lysander and prove his worth. After having breakfast and practicing for a while on the mansion grounds, Kai left for Aetheria University.

Arriving at the sword faculty, Kai went straight to the main arena. The arena was already filled with students who wanted to watch the duel between Kai and Lysander. Leo stood near the entrance, waving at Kai.

"Are you ready, Kai?" Leo asked.

Kai nodded. "Of course."

They walked towards the center of the arena. Lysander was already waiting there, with a sardonic smile on his face.

"You've finally come," Lysander said. "I can't wait to kick your ass."

Kai did not fall for Lysander's provocation. He focused on the upcoming battle.

Master Ragnar stood between them. "This fight is just for practice," he said. "No one should be seriously injured. Understood?"

Kai and Lysander nodded.

"Begin!" shouted Master Ragnar.

Lysander immediately attacked Kai at high speed. He used powerful and deadly Vanguard-level moves. Kai swiftly dodged and parried Lysander's attacks. He moved nimbly and agilely, utilizing his agility to avoid Lysander's relentless attacks.

Their battle was fierce. Their swords clashed creating flashes of light and deafening clanking sounds. The crowd cheered wildly, supporting their respective heroes.

Kai began to read Lysander's attack patterns. He realized that Lysander relied too much on strength and speed. He didn't have a well-thought-out strategy.

Kai decided to capitalize on Lysander's weakness. He lured Lysander into a furious attack, then dodged at the last moment. Lysander lost his balance and fell.

Kai immediately pointed his sword at Lysander's neck.

"You lose," Kai said.

Lysander stared at Kai with a look of disbelief. He didn't expect to be defeated by a Novice.

"This can't be..." muttered Lysander.

Kai lowered his sword. "You're overconfident, Lysander. You forget that strength and speed alone are not enough to win a fight."

Lysander got up with his face bright red. He was embarrassed and angry. He glanced at the crowd, then turned around and left the arena with hasty steps.

The crowd cheered for Kai. Leo ran over to Kai and hugged him.

"You did great, Kai!" Leo exclaimed. "You beat Lysander!"

Kai smiled. He felt satisfied that he had won the duel against Lysander. But he knew that the real battle was just beginning. He had to remain vigilant and uncover Lysander's identity as a spy for the enemy kingdom.

Kai left the arena with mixed feelings. He was happy to have won the duel against Lysander, but he also felt there was something strange about the young man. The negative aura he had felt earlier was getting stronger, and he was sure Lysander was hiding something.

He decided to find out more about Lysander. He found Leo chatting with some other students near the practice field. Among them, there were three girls who caught Kai's attention.

The first girl had long blonde hair and bright blue eyes. She seemed friendly and sociable, with a smile always adorning her face. The second girl had short black hair and piercing brown eyes. She seemed more reserved and serious, yet an aura of intelligence radiated from her. The third girl had fiery red hair and sparkling green eyes. She looked haughty and confident, with a slightly intimidating demeanor.

"Leo," Kai called. "Can we talk for a minute?"

Leo walked over to Kai. "What is it, Kai?"

"I want to know more about Lysander," Kai said. "Do you know anything about him?"

Leo frowned. "Lysander? Why are you suddenly interested in him?"

"I feel something strange about her," Kai replied. "I can't explain my feelings, but I'm sure he's hiding something."

Leo was silent for a moment. "Actually, I also feel something strange about Lysander," he admitted. "He's very introverted and rarely mingles with other students. He's also very talented in magic and swordsmanship, but he never wants to show his full abilities."

"Do you know where she comes from?" asked Kai.

"As far as I know, she comes from a small noble family on the outskirts of the kingdom," Leo replied. "But I don't know much about his family."

Kai nodded. He had to find out more about Lysander. She thanked Leo and was about to leave, but one of the blonde girls called out to her.

"Wait a minute," the girl said. "You're Kai Valerian, right? The one who defeated Lysander earlier?"

Kai nodded. "Yeah, right."

"Wow, you did great!" the girl exclaimed with sparkling eyes. "My name is Alicia Evergreen. Nice to meet you."

Kai smiled. "Nice to meet you too, Alicia."

"Introductions, this is Sophia Moonlight," Alicia said, pointing at the black-haired girl. "And this is Olivia Crimson," she continued, pointing at the red-haired girl.

Sophia nodded politely at Kai. "Nice to meet you."

Olivia gave Kai an appraising look. "I hear you're quite talented. But don't expect you to get close to Alicia just because you're strong."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "I don't know what you mean."

Olivia snorted. "Never mind, forget it." She turned and left, leaving Kai feeling confused.

"Don't mind her, Kai," Alicia said. "Olivia is a little jealous. She also comes from an influential noble family, just like Lysander."

Kai nodded. He began to realize that social life at Aetheria University was not simple. There was a lot of competition and intrigue among the students, especially those from noble families.

"We have to go now, Kai," Sophia said. "See you soon."

Master Ragnar was stunned for a moment, then burst out laughing. "Amazing! You really have an amazing talent, Kai Valerian!"

She decided to continue her investigation
