Chapter 2 - Shackles

"24 hours!" Jack felt that he was really unlucky. He fell on the bed and covered his face with a blanket. "Why didn't you call me!"

"I wanted to call you too." His roommate Collins replied with a wry smile, "I couldn't wake you up."

Jack sighed helplessly, feeling depressed: "It seems that I really have no luck in interviews!"

"Not really, a company called you today, and I said you were out, and they said to call again tomorrow." Collins said seriously. In the United States, this way of answering the phone is also very common: if your parents call, you can answer it; if it is your girlfriend who calls, and you are playing games or playing on the computer and don't want to answer, you will say that you are out, and you don't know where you are going. The same is true for interview companies. Anyway, you can't say that Jack is still sleeping at 10 am, and you have to say that you are out and don't know where you are going.

"What kind of company is it?" Jack got dressed and got out of bed, took out a pack of instant noodles from the drawer, knocked the bugs off the packaging bag, and prepared to eat the instant noodles, "What did they tell you?"

Collins went back to Jack's computer to play "World of Warcraft" and said without looking back: "I don't know, it's a woman, and she sounds very arrogant, like someone from a big company or government department."

Big company? Government department? Jack has never submitted a resume to big companies like Google and Apple. As for the government department, the civil service exam will only start registration next month. How could they call him for an interview now?

In addition, Collins asked Jack: "We need to submit an internship report for our thesis defense next week. What are you going to do?" Internship is the last course of four years of life in American universities. Jack must write enough things on the internship report form, and then the employer - the place he has been running around looking for - must stamp it to certify it. Some schools will collect this thing in March, while some schools, such as Harvard University where they are, will submit it in mid-June when they officially defend their thesis. Jack didn't take it seriously at first, and stayed at home during the Chinese New Year. As a result, he is now worried about this thing. However, most universities will leave a way out for students, giving them preferential treatment, so they can go to the school-run factory to fool around and get a stamp.

It's a pity that the school-run factory stopped stamping activities in April.

Jack was almost collapsed because of this matter. He was still thinking about what to do while borrowing hot water from the next door dormitory to make instant noodles. But the phone call was obviously more important. After all, as long as he could find a job, there would naturally be a place to stamp. While eating noodles, Jack was thinking: Who will call me?

The last time he submitted his resume was last Monday. The promising unit had already asked him to go for an interview. The hopeless unit would not call him after such a long time. Who could it be?

"Jack, hurry up, I'm leading the team to level up!" "World of Warcraft" uses a real-time combat mode, and team leveling is much faster than acting alone. Jack immediately forgot everything, turned on the computer of his roommate William who was interviewing outside, and quickly logged into the game.

At 11 o'clock the next morning, Jack, who was leveling up all night, was awakened by a ringing phone. He crawled over sleepily and picked up the phone: "Who are you looking for?"

"Is Jack there?" A woman's voice, and her tone was very arrogant, which immediately reminded Jack of the big company or government department Collins talked about yesterday. He was scared and immediately said respectfully: "It's me. Do you have anything to talk to me about?"

"Where do you live?" This question made Jack feel very strange. He thought about it, and in order to leave a good impression on his future employer, he still said respectfully: "I live in Boston..."

The woman interrupted him: "I'm asking where you live now."

Now? Jack took a breath: "I live in the school now, Harvard University Dormitory Building 9 Room 243..."

"Come down in 15 minutes." The woman hung up the phone after saying that.

What is this for? Jack, who was confused, was stunned for a while. He was already furious because of countless unpleasant things in his stomach, and now he was even more furious: What is this for? What kind of uncle is this! I won't serve you anymore!

He turned around and crawled back to his bed, fell headfirst and continued to sleep.

As he slept, he felt that the door seemed to open. He thought it was the neighbor next door who came to pull him to play cards, so he glanced casually and waved his hand: "Wait a minute, I have something to do, I'll talk to you after I wake up." Then he turned and continued to sleep with his face facing the wall.

Immediately afterwards, he was awakened by a scream, and he was immediately furious: "Collins! What the hell are you screaming about!"

"Woman!" Collins' voice trembled, "Woman!"

Woman? Jack has lived in this dormitory for four years, and except for that Halloween party, he has never seen a woman come in. He even caught dozens of cockroaches in William's drawer before, counting them one by one, and the result was 20 male cockroaches and 3 female cockroaches.

"Woman?" Jack sat up, rubbed his eyes and looked at the door, and said nonsense, "Are you sure it's not a shemale?" Then he was stunned. A tall woman in a T-shirt and jeans was standing at the door, scanning the two "naked pigs" on the bed with cold eyes.

"Get out!" Jack grabbed the blanket and covered his chest, shouting angrily, "How did you get in!"

The woman was unmoved: "Which one of you is Jack?"

Does this woman have a grudge against me? Even if she does, why would she rush into the dormitory to block me? Jack looked at Collins, and Collins looked at Jack.

Collins nodded at him and pointed: "He is Jack, I am staying in their room."

No loyalty! Jack was a step slower and could only say: "He is talking nonsense! My name is William, and I am a British student!"

"Get down here." The woman was very arrogant, a kind of pride that came from her bones, "Prove your identity."

Can't the two of us, two old men, beat you, a young woman in her twenties? Jack could see the traces of time on the woman's face, but as long as the door was closed... "Crack." The woman picked up a chair and broke a chair leg with her hands. "I'll count to three. If you don't come down, you will end up like this chair."

The chair was stolen from the dormitory of the old students upstairs when Jack was a junior, taking advantage of the graduates leaving school. It was put together with several other chairs and used as a card table. Seeing that it could no longer fulfill the obligations of a chair, Jack cried out in grief.

"Three." The woman did not count to one, nor did she mean to continue counting down. Instead, she sneered, "Okay, you use my face as a shoe insole..." Jack and Collins rolled down the bed, both wearing only a pair of underwear, and stood upright in front of the woman.

The woman did not shy away, glanced at them up and down, and asked: "Who of you is Jack?"

"He is!" Jack and Collins pointed at each other. The woman waved her hand, took out a piece of paper from somewhere, and looked at it.

Jack was dumbfounded: That was his resume, I don't know how it got into the hands of this evil woman... The worst thing is that there is his photo on it!

"Get out." The woman seemed to be used to bossing people around, and pointed at Collins, "Close the door when you go out."

Could it be! Jack watched the fawning and servile Collins go out, and he closed the door tightly. While wailing that he met the wrong person, he began to think: Could this woman be God's compensation for my bad luck for so long? Although she is a little older, she is still very beautiful and has a good figure...

"What are you thinking about!" The woman glanced at him, and suddenly punched Jack in the stomach without warning.

Jack directly knocked open the balcony door and flew out, leaning against the balcony railing, and even vomited the instant noodles he had eaten last night.

"I have no grudges against you..." Jack, who was furious, finally caught his breath and was about to curse, but was frightened by a bright light.

Knife! The woman was holding a one-foot-long dagger in her hand and was walking towards him. Her face was still so calm, so arrogant, so... cold.

"I have no grudges against you, why do you want to kill me!" Jack's shout almost spread throughout the dormitory building. Collins, who was in the dormitory next door, was also shocked when he heard the shout. He jumped up frantically and ran back to the door of his dormitory: "Don't be afraid, Lao Si, my brother is here!"

The woman looked at Jack: "You are very loyal." As she spoke, she grabbed the chair leg in her hand and threw it back.

The chair leg was inserted into the door frame with a whimpering sound, blocking the door tightly.

"Climb up!" Collins climbed up on the shoulders of his brothers and tried to climb in through the window above the door, "Lao Si! The brothers are coming!"

"Humph." The woman sneered slightly, and the dagger in her hand flashed, and then cut Jack's chest.

Blood gushed out from the huge wound.

"Old Four!" Collins leaned against the window, his eyes bloodshot, and he screamed and jumped into the dormitory, his eyes red as he rushed towards the woman with her back to him. "Are you going to die?" Without seeing the woman's movements, Collins screamed and flew backwards, hitting the door, spitting out two mouthfuls of water, and yelled: "Brothers, call the police!" The woman disappeared from the balcony like a ghost, and suddenly appeared in front of Collins. Without looking at his eyes full of fear and anger, she reached out and pulled the chair leg from the door, opened the door, and looked at the people in the corridor who were holding their phones to press 911: "What are you doing?" "She killed Jack!" Collins almost cried, "I killed you..." "You are worthy of killing me." The woman grabbed Collins who jumped up and threw him out of the door, "Don't get in the way, Jack is not dead." Collins crawled in again, mumbling: "I saw you kill him!" The woman was impatient, holding the collar of the burly Collins, and threw him in front of Jack like a chicken: "Which eye of yours saw me kill him!" Collins was stunned: Jack didn't even have a scar on his body, not to mention the huge wound just now. On the balcony, the blood that spurted out also disappeared without a trace.

Collins' eyes almost popped out, and he stammered at the sneering woman: "What's going on?"

"Get out!" The woman's eyes were fixed, and Collins and all the brothers who came in to see the situation fled out of the dormitory as if their butts were burned by fire. When he went out, Collins did not forget to close the door.

"It's so cold!" Collins shivered in the corridor, "Why is it so cold all of a sudden... It's so scary..."

When Jack, who was lying on the balcony, woke up, he saw the woman standing in front of him, still playing with the knife in her hand, and stepped back in fear: "Don't come over! I'll give you whatever you want!"

"Really?" The woman seemed to be stunned for a moment, "You'll give me everything I want?"

"Except my girlfriend!" Jack thought for a while, "You can take the rest at will.

She still has some conscience. The woman took a deep breath and said slowly: "Then, put this on. "

You won't kill me, but you'll give me a smart watch? What the hell is this place... Jack looked at the silver smart watch that the woman handed over, his heart full of doubts, and he didn't dare to reach out to take it.

"Put it on quickly." The woman's tone seemed to be softer, but the murderous aura faintly revealed between her thin eyebrows made her smile look particularly weird.

Jack didn't dare to disobey and could only put it on obediently. However, after putting it on, he felt his body sink, and an ominous premonition surged in his heart: "What kind of watch is this?"

"Soul shackles." The woman stood on the balcony of the apartment, jumped up, and jumped down lightly, "Remember to sign up for the federal civil service exam."

Just left like that? Jack was still stunned, with only the warm sunshine falling beside him.

"Where is that woman? "Collins saw the woman jumping down through the crack in the door, rushed into the room and pulled Jack up from the ground. Of course, he didn't believe that a woman who could easily kick him three or four meters away would fall to death so easily. This was just his subconscious reaction.

"Let's go." Jack was still staring at the watch in a daze: Mental shackles? What the hell is this?

"What did she say to you?" Collins drove away the roommates who were watching, closed the door, and asked Jack curiously.

"She asked me to take the federal civil service exam." Jack smiled bitterly, "Can I pass it?"

"Just take it if she asks you to." Collins also stared at the watch, full of curiosity, "What is this? Is it her birthday present for you?"

Jack slapped him: "Get out! What did she say it was called...what..." He seemed to have suddenly forgotten the name of the watch. He couldn't remember it after thinking for a long time, so he had to pat his head hard and shook his head, "I forgot it. Are you going to eat?"

Collins glanced at him: "What about you? "

This is a typical conversation between American nerdy college students. If Collins answered casually: "Go." Then Jack would say: "Bring me one."

And if Jack said: "I'm hungry." Then Collins would say: "Bring me one."

The two smiled at each other, and after a moment of silence, they walked out of the room together and walked into the 240 dormitory next door. Sure enough, they saw a person who was changing clothes: "William, can you bring us food?"

William is a kind-hearted person, and often brings food to the entire floor by himself.

But this time, William was obviously not so kind: "I'll give you food, but I forgot to bring chopsticks."

"Damn! "Collins cursed and ran out to borrow chopsticks. Jack could only sit at the desk, looking at the lunch box in front of him and worrying: There are no chopsticks, even if there is a spoon, it can't be asked to grab it with my hands... Speaking of spoons, Jack couldn't help but miss the stainless steel spoon he bought when he first entered school. Unfortunately, someone borrowed it last year and it has never appeared since then. However, at this moment... "I have a spoon in my hand?" Jack glanced and found that he was holding a spoon in his hand. He couldn't help but feel strange, "Where did it come from?" Then he was surprised to find that the spoon actually grew on his hand. His right hand now has four fingers and a spoon, which looks weird and funny.
