Chapter 18 - The Encounter

---

Kenzai continued through the dense forest, his primal instincts now finely tuned to the rhythm of nature. The night was thick with the calls of nocturnal creatures, each sound blending together into an almost melodic cacophony. His senses were on high alert—every rustle of leaves, every shift in the air carried meaning. The beastly companion had disappeared into the shadows hours ago, but Kenzai felt no loneliness. The forest, with its ancient energy, felt like home.

Yet, even in this place of serenity, Kenzai knew he couldn't stay hidden forever. Something had begun to gnaw at him—an unspoken urge to move forward. He needed to find others, to understand what the world had in store for him. The beast domain within him had given him more than just power; it had awoken a deep, undeniable desire to belong to something greater than himself.

As he moved through the forest, the wind suddenly shifted, carrying with it a strange scent—iron, sweat, and something distinctly human. His ears perked up, and his feet instinctively slowed, muscles coiling in readiness. Someone was nearby.

He crouched low to the ground, blending into the shadows with ease. His eyes scanned the area ahead—small, flickering campfires illuminated a clearing not far from his position. There were voices, low but distinct, and the unmistakable sound of weapons being sharpened, clinking as they moved.

Curiosity piqued, Kenzai crept closer, careful not to make a sound. As he neared the edge of the clearing, he caught sight of a group—five in total. Three humans, one elf, and a large creature he couldn't immediately identify. They appeared to be adventurers, preparing for something. Perhaps a hunt, or a quest—he couldn't tell from this distance.

Kenzai's eyes narrowed. He could sense power radiating from each of them—there was more to them than met the eye. The human leader, a tall man with a rough, battle-worn face, stood at the center, directing the others. His hands were covered in scars, and his aura seemed to thrum with confidence. The elf, by contrast, was lithe, her sharp eyes scanning the surroundings as though she could see everything before it even moved.

The creature—if it could be called that—stood hunched near the fire, its massive form casting a long shadow. It had the head of a lion, but its body was that of a bear, and its movements were surprisingly graceful for something so large.

Kenzai's instincts flared again. An adventuring party, he thought, considering his options. His presence might raise suspicion, but this could be the chance he needed to form alliances, to understand more about the world beyond the forest. The desire to learn, to grow stronger, tugged at him like an unrelenting current.

He stepped forward, slowly emerging from the cover of the trees.

The movement was enough to catch the attention of the group. The human leader's eyes immediately snapped in his direction, a hand reaching instinctively for the sword at his side. The others followed suit, their weapons ready as they turned toward Kenzai.

Kenzai held his ground, his form tall and imposing under the moonlight. His bioluminescent veins pulsed faintly through his fur, and his claws twitched at his sides, ready for combat if necessary. But he wasn't here to fight. Not yet.

The silence stretched between them for a long moment, the tension thick in the air.

"Who goes there?" The human leader's voice rang out, rough but commanding. His hand didn't leave his sword, but there was no immediate threat in his posture. He studied Kenzai, his sharp eyes assessing the figure before him.

"I'm... passing through," Kenzai's deep voice rumbled, the words feeling strange on his tongue. It had been a while since he had spoken to anyone. "Not here to cause trouble."

The elf's eyes narrowed, scanning Kenzai with a look of suspicion. Her bow was drawn, though her arrow was notched loosely. The others remained quiet, waiting for a signal.

"And what is it that you are, exactly?" she asked, her tone wary but intrigued.

Kenzai shifted slightly, the urge to reveal everything at once flickering in his mind. Tell them of the Beast Domain? No, he couldn't. Not yet. They would not understand, and it might make them hostile.

"I'm… not from around here," he said simply, his eyes shifting from one person to the next. "I was in the dungeon. Now, I'm just... looking for my place in this world."

There was a long pause. The human leader exchanged a glance with the others. Kenzai's stance was a clear indication that he wasn't hostile, but there was still wariness in the air.

Finally, the leader spoke again, his voice gruff but not unfriendly. "So you're new to this world, eh? Got the look of someone who's seen battle."

Kenzai's eyes met his, and for a brief moment, there was understanding between them. They both bore the scars of the world.

"You'll find plenty of battles around here," the human continued, his hand finally lowering from his sword. "We're on a quest to clear out a nest of monsters causing trouble for the nearby village. If you're looking for something to do, you could join us. We could use the extra strength."

The elf gave him a sideways glance, but her expression softened slightly. "If you're skilled enough."

Kenzai felt the call to fight stir within him, the animalistic drive to dominate, to prove himself. His heart beat a little faster, and the beast within him responded to the idea of hunting monsters, of testing his limits.

"I'll join," he said, his voice steady and resolute. "I'm strong enough."

The human leader nodded, satisfied. "Alright then. The name's Korrin. This is Valeria," he gestured toward the elf, "and the big guy here's Gorrath." The lion-bear creature gave a low rumble in acknowledgment. "We've got a small job, but it could lead to bigger things. You up for it?"

Kenzai's lips curled into something between a grin and a snarl. "I'm ready."

Korrin grinned back. "Good. We leave at dawn. Make yourself useful, and maybe we'll make you part of the group."

With that, the group returned to preparing for their journey. Kenzai stood nearby, silently watching them work. For the first time in a long while, he felt a sense of belonging stir within him, a sense that, despite his primal instincts and powers, there was a place for him in this world.

The adventure had begun.
