Chapter 24 - The beast within

The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the narrow path as Kenzai and the adventurers approached Duskwatch Pass. The jagged cliffs on either side loomed overhead, their sharp edges like the teeth of some ancient predator. The air felt heavy, charged with an unnatural stillness.

Garreth signaled for the group to halt. "Stay close. This pass has a reputation. Bandits, wild beasts, even remnants of corrupted creatures sometimes linger here."

Elira's bow was already in her hands, an arrow nocked and ready. Selene muttered a soft incantation, her staff glowing faintly with protective magic. Doran gripped his heavy warhammer, his eyes sharp despite his casual stance. Alden, the youngest of the group, tightened his grip on his short blades.

Kenzai remained silent but alert. His heightened senses picked up faint movements echoing from deeper within the canyon. Something was waiting for them.

As they moved cautiously forward, a guttural growl reverberated through the canyon walls. Shadows flickered at the edges of their vision.

"They're here," Elira whispered.

From the rocky crevices, creatures emerged—twisted forms of wolves and humanoids, their bodies warped and corrupted, their eyes glowing with a sickly red light.

Corrupted Beasts.

Garreth drew his sword. "Hold the line! Don't let them separate us!"

The monsters lunged forward in a frenzy.

The Battle Begins

The first wave struck hard. Garreth met them with the precision of a seasoned leader, his sword carving through the beasts with practiced ease. Elira's arrows rained down with deadly accuracy, each shot finding its mark. Doran became an immovable wall, his warhammer crushing skulls with every swing.

Selene unleashed bursts of fire and arcs of lightning, keeping the creatures at bay. Alden darted between them, his blades flashing as he struck weak points and retreated before retaliation could come.

But it was Kenzai who truly became the center of chaos.

He leaped into the fray, his body shifting mid-air. His arms elongated into sharp claws, his legs thickened with sinewy strength, and his teeth became jagged fangs.

A hybrid form—a fusion of wolf and reptilian traits.

He tore through the corrupted beasts with feral precision, his movements a blur of violence and primal grace. His bio-tech suit shimmered, adjusting to his transformations, reinforcing his claws and enhancing his reflexes.

"Watch him fight," Selene said under her breath, a mix of awe and concern in her voice.

But the creatures kept coming. For every one they felled, two more seemed to replace it.

The Domain Awakens

As the battle raged on, Kenzai felt it—a deep, resonant hum within his chest.

The Monster Domain.

It pulsed like a second heartbeat, urging him to unleash it. The primal power whispered promises of overwhelming strength, of becoming the apex predator among these creatures.

But there was a price.

His claws dripped with blackened blood as he paused, his eyes glowing faintly with golden energy.

If I let this out… will I be able to control it?

Before he could decide, a sharp scream pierced the air. Alden had been knocked off his feet, a hulking corrupted beast towering over him, fangs bared and dripping venom.

Kenzai didn't hesitate.

A surge of energy erupted from Kenzai, a golden aura flaring around him. His body transformed again, this time into something far more monstrous. His shoulders broadened, scales spread across his arms and chest, and his eyes glowed with an intense predatory light.

His roar echoed through the canyon, shaking the very stones beneath their feet.

In one fluid motion, Kenzai lunged at the beast threatening Alden. His claws sank deep into its chest, and with a monstrous strength, he lifted the creature and slammed it into the canyon floor, cracking the stone beneath it.

The corrupted beast twitched once before going still.

The other monsters hesitated. For the first time, they felt fear.

But Kenzai wasn't done. He charged into the remaining enemies, his movements blindingly fast and devastatingly powerful.

Aftermath

When the last corrupted beast fell, silence returned to Duskwatch Pass. The group stood amidst the carnage, catching their breath. The scent of blood lingered in the air.

Kenzai stood in the center of it all, his monstrous form slowly retracting, scales retreating, claws shrinking, and his glowing eyes fading back to normal. His bio-tech suit adjusted, molding back to its neutral state.

His breaths were heavy, his body trembling slightly. But he was in control.

Garreth approached cautiously. "That… was something else. You alright, Kenzai?"

Kenzai nodded, though his voice was hoarse. "I'm fine… for now."

Selene stepped closer, her staff glowing faintly as she scanned him. "You unleashed something powerful back there. Was that… safe?"

Kenzai looked at his hands—still stained with black blood. "Safe or not… it's a part of me now."

The group exchanged uneasy glances, but no one pressed further. Kenzai had saved Alden's life and turned the tide of the battle. That was enough for now.

Garreth sheathed his sword. "We need to move. Duskwatch Pass isn't safe for lingering."

The group continued onward, but Kenzai's mind remained focused on what had just happened.

The Monster Domain was growing stronger.

And with it came both power… and danger.

But against the one within himself.
