I woke up the breeze was cold but I walked out of the hotel hoping to get some air to clear my mind. As I stepped out of the hotel to get some fresh air, I noticed someone across the street who caught my eye. At first, I thought it was just a strange reflection, but as I stared, my heart skipped a beat. They looked exactly like me. Same height, same face, same everything. It was like seeing a mirror image come to life. Confusion flooded my mind—was I really staring at an identical twin I'd never met before? I had to know more.
The moment I saw them across the road, I couldn't stop myself—I just started running. My heart was pounding as I darted through traffic, barely noticing the cars honking around me. It was like looking at my reflection, only they were real, standing right there. My mind raced with questions, but all I could think was how impossible this was. I had never met this person before, yet they were *me*. I stopped right in front of them, breathless, staring into my own eyes.
"H-hey!" I said breathlessly, she stared at me in shock and I just stared back, "I WANT ANSWERS NOW!" She stepped back and I continues to walk closer our facs nearly inches apart. "ITS NOT FAIR! YOU GOT THE BETTER LIFE!" I started to ear up my voice shaky, I saw sadness in her eyes but she'll never know the pain and embarrassment I went through. "I'm sorry just hear me out please?" I sat before the wall my face in my hands, "go on" I said with my face in my hands to hide my cloudy eyes. "MUM couldn't take care of 2 kids so she made our dad pick one of us and she said she would give the other child to her mum which is our grandma, day in and day out she would tell me all the great things about our mother and even our father, she said that she tried reaching out to you but you ghosted her, which is why I'm looking for you, I wanted to meet my twin sister! I'm sorry about dad, someone told me that he wad abusing you and it's defiantly not fair! Im here to help, I'm here for you and I want to take you back with me, you'll meet our family become one of us, you'll have a better chance at life!"
She made it sound so simple but it's not, she doesn't know the half of it, the half of the trauma I went through! "Please" I said as I hugged her crying into her chest, I wanted to act tough I wanted to act like I could be alone but I couldn't and no matter how hard I tried to hold back my tears they just came out more and more. "So what's your name?" I mumbled with a shaky voice, "victoria" I smiled at her words, I couldn't believe it! Finally someone who will be able to understand me!
After the shock of meeting my twin, I couldn't wait any longer—she had to take me to meet my grandmother. As we left the street and headed to her house, my mind was racing, wondering how she'd react. When we walked in, her eyes widened in disbelief, her hands trembling as she looked back and forth between us. "Is this real?" she whispered, tears welling up. Seeing her face, I knew she had no idea about this either. It was a moment none of us could've ever imagined.
My grandmother slowly reached out, her fingers brushing against my sterdy arm as if she needed to feel me to believe it. "How is this possible?" she asked, her voice shaky. Neither of us had answers. My twin and I exchanged glances, still grappling with the reality ourselves. Grandma sank into her chair, staring at us with a mix of joy, confusion, and sadness. "All these years... and now i meet you?," she whispered, her eyes filled with questions she wasn't ready to ask. I sat beside her, unsure of what to say, the weight of the moment settling in.
I knelt beside her, taking her hand gently. "Grandma, we didn't know either," I said softly, glancing at my twin who stood silently, still processing everything as well as me. My twin finally spoke, their voice eerily similar to mine. "I grew up with different parents… I had no idea there was another me out there until she told me." My grandmother's eyes filled with tears, her voice breaking as she whispered, "I never imagined something like this could happen. All these years… so much lost time." The room felt heavy with emotion, a bittersweet reunion none of us had expected. I squeezed her hand, my mind racing with a thousand questions, but all I could feel was the weight of the moment and the strange, new bond forming between us.
The silence that followed was thick, as if none of us knew how to move forward from this moment. My grandmother's hand trembled in mine, and I could see the mix of emotions swirling in her eyes—joy at finding a long-lost piece of the family, but also deep sorrow for all the time that had slipped away, unknown and unspoken. My twin shifted awkwardly, finally sitting down across from us, their expression mirroring my own confusion.
"How could this happen?" I asked, more to myself than anyone else. My twin's voice, so hauntingly like mine, broke the silence again. "I cant believe im only meeting my supposed to be best friend now. I only found out a few weeks ago and didn't know where to start looking." The words hit me like a wave, and suddenly, everything made a twisted sort of sense. My grandmother blinked rapidly, tears spilling down her cheeks as she looked between us. "I wish I had known where to find you, because i wouldve saved you earlier" she said to my twin, her voice breaking.
The sadness in the room was suffocating. So much time had been lost—years we could've spent knowing each other, building memories. My twin and I could have grown up side by side, shared birthdays, secrets, everything. Instead, here we were, strangers bound by blood and circumstance, trying to fill in the blanks of our lives. "We can start now," I said, more to reassure myself than anyone else. My twin met my eyes, a hint of a smile on their face. "Yeah," they said softly, "we've got a lot of catching up to do."
Grandma squeezed my hand again, nodding. "Yes, we do." In that moment, I knew it wouldn't be easy—there was so much to learn, so many questions to ask—but we had found each other, and that had to mean something.
