Chereads / THE BODYGUARD'S VOW / Chapter 9 - Fractures and feelings

Chapter 9 - Fractures and feelings

The silence between them was heavy as they drove back to the estate. Jungkook gripped the steering wheel tightly, his jaw set, while Emi stared out of the window, her thoughts swirling.

After the events at the dock, something had shifted. The danger had brought them closer, but it also raised questions neither was ready to address.

When they arrived, Emi climbed out of the car without a word and headed to her room. Jungkook watched her go, torn between following her and keeping his distance.

---

Later that night, Jungkook found her on the balcony, her arms wrapped around herself as she stared at the city lights.

"You shouldn't be out here alone," he said, his voice softer than usual.

She didn't turn to look at him. "I can't stay locked inside forever, Jungkook. Not when everything around me is falling apart."

He stepped closer but kept his distance, leaning against the railing. "You did well today."

She let out a bitter laugh. "Did I? Because all I see is how much worse things are getting. How much danger I've put you in."

"This isn't your fault," Jungkook said firmly.

"Isn't it?" She turned to face him, her eyes glistening. "If I weren't here, if my father hadn't made enemies, you wouldn't be risking your life."

Jungkook's gaze softened. "I've been risking my life long before I met you, Emi. This is just...different."

"Different how?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

He hesitated, the words caught in his throat. For years, he'd built walls around himself, shutting out anything that could distract him from his duty. But Emi had a way of breaking through those walls, whether he wanted her to or not.

"Because it's you," he finally admitted.

Her breath hitched, and for a moment, neither of them moved.

"Jungkook..." she began, but he shook his head.

"You don't have to say anything," he said, stepping back. "Get some rest. We'll talk tomorrow."

But as he walked away, Emi couldn't shake the feeling that they had crossed a line they couldn't go back from.

A Fragile Connection

The next morning, Jungkook avoided her. He kept himself busy with training, reviewing security footage, and planning their next move. But Emi wasn't one to be ignored.

She found him in the gym, his shirt soaked with sweat as he pounded the punching bag.

"Are you going to keep avoiding me?" she asked, crossing her arms.

Jungkook paused, his chest heaving as he turned to face her. "I'm not avoiding you."

"Could've fooled me," she said, stepping closer. "What are you so afraid of?"

"I'm not afraid," he said, his voice sharp.

"Then why are you running?"

Her question hung in the air, cutting through his defenses. He took a step closer, his eyes locking onto hers.

"Because if I let myself feel anything for you," he said quietly, "I won't be able to do my job. And you need me to protect you, not...whatever this is."

Emi's heart ached at his words, but she refused to back down. "And what if I don't need protecting, Jungkook? What if I just need you?"

The vulnerability in her voice broke something inside him. Before he could stop himself, he reached out, his hand brushing against her cheek.

"You don't know what you're asking," he whispered.

"Yes, I do," she said, stepping closer. "And I think you feel the same way, even if you're too scared to admit it."

His thumb grazed her cheek, and for a moment, the world fell away. But then he pulled back, his expression hardening.

"This can't happen," he said, his voice firm. "Not now. Not like this."

And just like that, the moment was gone, leaving Emi standing alone as Jungkook walked away.

That night, Emi found herself unable to sleep. She wandered the halls of the estate, her thoughts a whirlwind of frustration and longing.

When she passed the living room, she saw Jungkook sitting on the couch, his head in his hands.

"Can't sleep either?" she asked, hesitating in the doorway.

He looked up, his expression tired but soft. "No."

She sat down beside him, the silence between them surprisingly comfortable.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly.

"For what?"

"For making things harder for you," she admitted.

Jungkook shook his head. "You didn't. If anything, you've made things...better."

She looked at him, surprised. "Better how?"

He hesitated, then said, "Before I met you, my life was simple. Cold, but simple. You've changed that."

"Is that a bad thing?" she asked.

"No," he said softly. "It's not."

For the first time, there was no tension, no fear of crossing a line. Just two people sharing a quiet moment, their feelings for each other unspoken but undeniable.

And though neither of them said it, they both knew their lives would never be the same.

Collisions of Heart and Danger

The tension between Jungkook and Emi had grown unbearable. It was in the stolen glances, the way his voice softened when he spoke to her, and the way she found herself seeking his presence more than she cared to admit.

One evening, after another long day of planning and surveillance, Emi found Jungkook in the garden. He was leaning against a tree, his expression pensive as the moonlight cast shadows across his sharp features.

"Jungkook," she said, approaching cautiously.

He looked up, surprised but not unwelcome. "Can't sleep?"

"Not with everything going on," she admitted, standing beside him.

They fell into a comfortable silence, the chirping of crickets the only sound between them.

"You shouldn't be out here alone," he said eventually.

Emi smirked. "You always say that. But you're here, so I'm not alone."

His lips twitched in a faint smile. "Fair point."

She hesitated, then asked, "Do you ever think about what this would be like if we weren't in the middle of all this danger?"

Jungkook turned to her, his gaze intense. "All the time."

His honesty startled her, but before she could respond, he stepped closer.

"Emi," he said, his voice low, "I've been trying to fight this, but it's impossible. You've gotten under my skin."

Her breath hitched as he reached up to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "And what happens if we stop fighting it?"

For a moment, he didn't answer. Then, slowly, he leaned in, his forehead resting against hers.

"Then we both lose," he whispered.

But neither of them moved away.

Danger Strikes Again

The next morning, Jungkook's phone buzzed with an urgent message from one of his informants.

"They know," the message read.

Jungkook's stomach sank. Blackstone's men had discovered their involvement in the intercepted shipment.

Without wasting a second, he gathered Emi and his team in the estate's security room.

"We've been compromised," he said grimly. "Blackstone knows we're onto him, and he's not going to take it lightly."

Emi's heart raced. "What does that mean?"

"It means we're out of time," Jungkook said. "We need to act before he does. There's another shipment coming in two days. This one might lead us straight to him."

"Then let's go," Emi said, her determination clear.

Jungkook frowned. "You're staying here."

"No, I'm not," she shot back. "You need me, and you know it."

Before he could argue, the room was rocked by an explosion. The windows shattered, and alarms blared as the estate shook.

"Get down!" Jungkook shouted, pulling Emi to the ground.

Smoke filled the air as chaos erupted around them. Jungkook's team scrambled to secure the area, but it was clear the estate had been compromised.

"They're here," Jungkook said, his voice tight. "We need to move."

He grabbed Emi's hand, guiding her through the smoke-filled halls. Gunfire echoed in the distance, and her heart pounded with every step.

Jungkook and Emi burst out of the estate, heading for a secure vehicle. His team provided cover, but the attackers were relentless.

As they reached the car, a bullet grazed Jungkook's arm. He winced but didn't stop moving, shoving Emi into the passenger seat before jumping into the driver's side.

"Are you okay?" Emi asked, her voice shaking.

"I'm fine," he said through gritted teeth, slamming on the gas.

They sped away, leaving the chaos behind. Emi reached for his arm, inspecting the wound despite his protests.

"Stop fussing," he said, but there was no heat in his words.

"Stop being so stubborn," she shot back, tearing a piece of fabric from her shirt to wrap his arm.

Their eyes met briefly, and despite the danger, a small smile tugged at Jungkook's lips.

"You're impossible," he said.

"And you love it," she replied without thinking.

The words hung in the air, both of them too stunned to respond.

The Quiet Moment

Hours later, they reached a safe house on the outskirts of the city. Jungkook's team was scattered, but they had regrouped and secured the location.

Emi sat on the couch, exhausted but unable to sleep. Jungkook entered the room, his arm bandaged and his expression unreadable.

"Are you okay?" he asked, sitting beside her.

She nodded. "Just tired."

They sat in silence, the events of the day weighing heavily on them.

"I meant what I said earlier," Emi said suddenly, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jungkook turned to her, his expression softening. "Which part?"

"That I think... I think I'm falling for you," she admitted, her cheeks flushing.

For a moment, he didn't respond. Then he reached out, taking her hand in his.

"Emi," he said, his voice low and filled with emotion, "you're the only thing that makes this chaos bearable."

She looked up at him, her eyes searching his. "Then why do you keep pulling away?"

"Because I'm afraid of what happens if I can't protect you," he admitted.

"You already are," she said softly.

And this time, when their lips met, there was no hesitation.
