Chapter 6 - The Last days in Britannia

Year: 577 AD

Caesarian Empire

Province of New Rome

New Rome Forum

A few months ago

The Forum of New Rome was discussing how to repatriate the Roman-Britons from Britannia, as the situation was becoming increasingly dire, more and more Germanic tribes were advancing into Britannia and already It was becoming impossible to defend a land as distant as Britannia, so the senators of the Caesarian Empire formed a majority and decided to support the Charter of Britannia, by Emperor Marcus II.

However, a minority was against the repatriation of the Romano-Britons to the Caesarian Empire, and the most notable of these was Senator Honorius Septimus Julian, representative of the province of New Julian and he protested vehemently and said:

" Why would we bring a bunch of peasants to our lands? They would only bring diseases to our people, we should focus on territorial expansion, there are native tribes that are not friendly to us who could attack us at any moment and not a bunch of Old World barbarians who are taking over Britannia, the Western Roman Emperor Honorius knew that sooner or later the Roman-Britons would falling to the Anglo-Saxons, what we are doing is spending our financial and military resources on a lost cause." says Honorius.

Senator Aetius Carractus Constantinus, representing the majority and having Roman-Breton origins, confronts Honorius and responds:

"My people have always been on Rome's side, it has always been the province that sent the most soldiers to conflicts and now that Rome is under the control of the Eastern Romans they don't give a damn about Britannia, but we as direct heirs of the Western Roman Empire must help our Roman-Britons brothers against the Anglo-Saxons until we can reach an agreement, but until then we must use our technological superiority against our enemies to ensure our victory, the native tribes can be defeated like the Anglo-Saxons and what's more their ability to understand something as complex as our system is like using a toilet, something they have no idea how to do, so we should help them our people. Then Senator Honorius Septimus, I reject this idea of leaving our Roman-British brothers in Britannia to be massacred by the Anglo-Saxons, the Caesarian navy together with the Caesarian army will return to Britannia to save my people from the Anglo-Saxon barbarians." Aetius replies.

Honorius leaves with other senators who are against the repatriation of the Roman-Britons to the Caesarian Empire and leaves the Forum of New Rome furious, but now they could do nothing but expect the Anglo-Saxons to exterminate the Roman-Britons.

Senator Aetius Carractus, with the majority of votes, approved the expedition to repatriate the Roman-Britons, with the Classis Nova Romanorum Lucius Theodosius Maximus being responsible, this being his last mission as commander general of the Caesarian navy and the Legatus Legionis Constantinus Severus, Paulus Atanasius and Basil Sophocles to Britannia.

Port Paulus Theodosius

A Few weeks later

The Classis Nova Romanorum Lucius Theodosius the Wise, the Legatus Legionis Constantinus Severus, Paulus Atanasius, and Basil Sophocles were ready to depart for Britannia.

The Legatus Legionis were excited for their first battle in the Old World and Lucius, with all his experience, decided to ask the three Legatus Legionis a question:

"Tell me, how would you defeat very fierce enemies who have a numerical superiority?" asks Lucius.

The Legatus Legionis thought for a moment and each of them gave a different answer:

"Our soldiers must remain on defense and wait for reinforcements." replies Constantinus.

"Our soldiers must find a gap in the enemy defense and try to break the enemy formation." Paulus replies.

"Our soldiers must retreat if they are not in a defensible position and if we have a chance we must push the enemy if their morale is broken." Basilio answers.

Lucius sees that each of the Legatus Legionis thought of a different way to defeat the enemy, so he says to the military:

" I can't be the best person to tell you how to lead a battle on land, but with the experience of having fought in Italy in the Gothic Wars I can give you a rule of three: First rule, they have a much higher morale than our Roman-Britons brothers, second rule, they have a stronger army than the Roman-Breton resistance and the third rule, they are trying to solidify their power in Britannia. If we are to arrive as quickly as possible to help our Roman-Britons brothers, then we have to have cohesion on the battlefield, so that there is no communication error in the battle, for example, I I participated in the Battle of Ravenna in 540 in which General Flavius Belisarius took the capital of the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths, the grenadiers psychologically destroyed the Ostrogoth soldiers and made them f flee the city, thus marking a great victory for the Eastern Roman Empire in the Gothic Wars. What I mean is that a battle is not only won with the use of swords and arrows, tar bombs proved to be more powerful weapons than swords in the Gothic Wars and with this superiority technologically, we Caesarians, made the Eastern Romans able to make a good part of Italy fall into their hands In other words, to win a battle when the enemy has numerical superiority, one must have cohesion on the battlefield, knowledge of the place where one is fighting and technological superiority. We have a great chance to save almost all of our Roman-Britons brothers from the Anglo-Saxon chaos and that is why we must be motivated, which my ancestor the Western Roman Emperor Honorius what he did was cruel to a people who had always been on the side of Rome and that is why we must repatriate our Roman-Briton brothers to the Caesarian Empire." says Lucius.

And so ended the conversation between them and they entered the Romulus, being referred to in the future as "The saviors of the Roman-Britons".

Two months later

When they arrived in Britannia they saw that the situation was irreversible, so they had to call all the Roman-Britons to the decision that would change their lives: to stay and fight against the Anglo-Saxons or fight to the end for their homeland.

A good part of the Romano-Britons decided that it was a hopeless fight to postpone what was already planned with the result of all the battles they had against the Kingdom of Wessex, so the Romano-Britons from all social classes embarked on the Romulus taking thousands of Roman-Britons to the Caesarian Empire.

Lucius saw in those people a look of sadness, melancholy and pain, leaving their homeland because a barbarian invader would exterminate them if they stayed, so he said:

"This is the end of Britain, the people who were always on Rome's side no longer exist, they were humiliated by wild barbarians who took away their will to live in their homeland, to those who Those who remain will encounter more humiliation and will be killed by barbarians, this will be the end of the people of Constantine the Great and Saint Helena, a new people is born and these are the English." says Lucius.

The situation was so catastrophic that with the news of the repatriation of the Romano-Britons, hundreds of them were arriving in the port cities every day, many of them were peasants and some were descendants of the Romans who ruled Britannia others were scribes and there was even a doctor who was in that place even after such misfortune and territorial losses.

A Few months later

After defeating the Anglo-Saxons at the Battle of Durham, King Ceawlin signed a peace treaty that did not give about 30 years of peace, during which time the Roman-Britons who still lived in the area commanded by the Anglo-Saxons they were expelled to the lands that were controlled by the Romano-Britons.

Even with this victory, one thing entered the mind of every Romano-Briton:The Anglo-Saxons were going to exterminate them, so all the leaders decided that the best thing for their people was to go to the Caesarian Empire.

Emperor Marcus II sent 40 more Romulus ships to repatriate as many Roman-Britons as possible, with 60 more Romulus ships now crossing the English Channel to the Atlantic Ocean.

Lucius saw that one of Romulus' ships was full and there would be a family of peasants left as the last Roman-Britons, but Lucius took them to his ship and as soon as his ship left the harbor, he saw the Anglo-Saxons invaded the port and shouted words that sounded like a demon speaking, so savage were those people.

The youngest girl of the peasant family pulled Lucius's cloak and asked:

"Hey, what's it like living in the Caesarean Empire?" asks the girl.

Lucius then bent down and answered the girl:

"The Caesarian Empire is the Roman Empire that does not seek to follow the same mistakes that led to its Fall in the western part.We believe that to build a Roman Empire in the New World, it will have to be different from what it was in the Old World, we need justice, trust and peace, that place has not yet been fully conquered or colonized by the Sassanids or our Eastern Roman brothers, there are only a few native tribes that are really dangerous, but other tribes have already adopted our customs, our religion and Roman culture. The Caesarian Empire is the stability of the New World against the instability and barbarian invasions of the Old World, we are the descendants of the Western Romans who fled the misfortune and chaos of the Old World and just as Romulus and Remus founded a New Rome to be our inspiration and create a loyal people, our Romulus and Remus were my ancestors, Paulus Theodosius Maximus and Quintus Theodosius Maximus, They founded the Empire we are today, from my great ancestor Emperor Theodosius I, founder of the Theodosian Dynasty, we proudly carry forward the Roman legacy and the legacy of my family in the New World." Lucius replies.

In the end, all 150,000 Romano-Britons were repatriated to the Caesarian Empire and so what were once sparsely populated towns and villages saw a huge increase in tax revenue and for now it ended the lack of labor in cities and in the countryside.

The population of the Caesarian Empire was around 4 million and 250 thousand inhabitants, now another 150 thousand inhabitants arrived and with that 4 million and 400 thousand inhabitants now existed in the Caesarian Empire, being a rising power on a global scale, but in the New World it reigned supreme over the native tribes.
