Chapter 17 - Into the Expanse

---

The morning air was heavy with tension as Kael, Caden, and Seris prepared to leave the ruined temple. A group of survivors gathered to see them off, their faces a mixture of hope and fear. The journey to the Shattered Expanse was a death sentence for most, and everyone knew it.

Seris adjusted her cloak, her silver hair glinting in the dim sunlight. She moved with an ease that set her apart, her piercing green eyes scanning the horizon as though expecting danger at every turn.

Caden, as usual, was less than optimistic. "Let me just say this one more time: this is the worst idea we've ever had."

Kael gave him a sidelong glance. "You didn't have to come."

"Oh, no. If you're going to get yourself killed, someone has to bring your body back."

Seris turned to them, her voice cutting through their bickering. "If you're done wasting time, we should leave. The Expanse doesn't get safer the longer you wait."

Kael nodded, his grip tightening on the hilt of his sword. The image of the Voidmaster haunted him, but he pushed it aside. If the relic in the Expanse was their only hope, he couldn't afford hesitation.

The Journey Begins

The road to the Shattered Expanse was eerily quiet. The landscape grew harsher with every mile, the trees gnarled and twisted as though writhing in unseen agony. The air felt heavier, charged with a strange energy that made Kael's skin prickle.

"Feels like the Void is already here," Caden muttered, glancing around.

Seris remained silent, her eyes fixed ahead.

After hours of travel, the group reached the edge of the Expanse. Before them stretched a vast, desolate wasteland. The ground was cracked and blackened, fissures glowing with an eerie, pulsating light. Strange, jagged formations jutted out of the earth, casting long, menacing shadows.

"The Shattered Expanse," Seris said quietly. "A place torn apart by the Void's power. Even the light struggles to reach here."

Kael took a deep breath. "What do we need to do?"

"There's a temple at the center," Seris explained. "The relic is hidden there. But the closer we get, the stronger the Void's influence will become. Stay close and don't let your guard down."

Caden looked skeptical. "And what happens if we lose our way?"

Seris glanced at him, her expression grim. "You won't live long enough to regret it."

Whispers in the Shadows

As they ventured deeper into the Expanse, the oppressive atmosphere grew heavier. The air felt alive, buzzing with an unnatural energy. Kael began to hear faint whispers at the edge of his consciousness, indistinct but persistent.

"Do you hear that?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Seris glanced at him sharply. "Ignore it. The Void preys on the mind. If you listen, it will take hold."

Kael nodded, though the whispers continued to gnaw at him.

Hours passed, the landscape growing more alien and hostile. At one point, they came across a twisted tree, its branches reaching out like clawed hands. A strange, black liquid dripped from its bark, hissing as it hit the ground.

"What is that?" Caden asked, keeping a wide berth.

"Corruption," Seris replied. "The Void's influence made manifest. Don't touch it."

Kael stared at the tree, unease twisting in his gut. The whispers grew louder, more insistent, as if the tree itself was calling to him. He shook his head, focusing on the path ahead.

The First Trial

As night fell, they reached a narrow gorge filled with thick, swirling mist. Seris stopped abruptly, holding up a hand.

"We're not alone," she said, her voice low.

Kael drew his sword, scanning the area. The mist seemed to shift and writhe, shapes moving within it.

"They're here," Seris warned.

The shapes solidified into figures—twisted, humanoid forms with elongated limbs and hollow, glowing eyes. Voidspawn.

Caden unsheathed his blade, his usual bravado replaced with grim determination. "Looks like they've been waiting for us."

The Voidspawn attacked in a frenzy, their movements erratic and unnerving. Kael parried a strike, his sword clashing against the creature's clawed hand. He countered with a swift slash, the Voidspawn dissolving into mist as his blade found its mark.

Seris moved like a shadow, her twin daggers flashing as she dispatched her foes with precision. Caden, though outnumbered, fought with sheer tenacity, his strikes heavy and deliberate.

Kael fought to keep up, his mind racing. The whispers were louder now, distracting him. One of the Voidspawn took advantage, lunging at him from the side.

"Focus, Kael!" Seris shouted, throwing one of her daggers to intercept the attack.

Kael gritted his teeth, shaking off the haze. He drove his blade into another Voidspawn, its shriek echoing in the gorge.

After what felt like an eternity, the last of the Voidspawn fell. The group stood in silence, catching their breath.

"They're getting stronger," Seris said, her tone grave. "The Void knows we're here."

Kael wiped his blade, his thoughts heavy. If this was just the beginning, what awaited them deeper in the Expanse?

A Warning in the Night

They set up camp in a small, sheltered alcove. The air was cold, the silence oppressive.

As Kael sat by the fire, Seris approached him, her expression unreadable.

"You're hearing them, aren't you?" she asked.

Kael hesitated before nodding. "The whispers. They're... getting louder."

Seris crouched beside him, her green eyes locking onto his. "The Void wants you, Kael. It will use every trick it has to break you. Doubt, fear, guilt—whatever it takes. You can't let it in."

"And if I can't fight it?" he asked quietly.

She placed a hand on his shoulder, her grip firm. "You're stronger than you think. But you need to trust yourself. The moment you give in, it's over."

Kael nodded, though her words did little to ease his mind.
