Chapter 22 - The Gate of Despair

The massive gateway loomed before them, its surface carved with shifting runes that radiated dark energy. The air around it pulsed, heavy with malice, and the faint sound of a heartbeat echoed from within.

Seris stepped forward, her eyes scanning the intricate patterns. "This isn't like the other trials," she said, her voice tense. "It's not just testing us. It's trying to destroy us."

Caden scowled. "Great. Another funhouse of death. Can't wait to see what's inside."

Kael remained silent, his gaze fixed on the gate. He could feel the Void stirring within him, its presence stronger than ever. The gate wasn't just another trial—it was a final threshold, a point of no return.

"We need to be ready," he said finally, his voice low. "Whatever's on the other side, it's going to be worse than anything we've faced."

Seris nodded, her fingers tracing the runes as she murmured an incantation. The runes flared briefly, and the gate began to creak open, revealing a swirling vortex of darkness.

Caden drew his newly acquired dagger, its blade glowing faintly. "No point standing around. Let's get this over with."

Kael stepped forward, his sword at the ready. "Stay close. Don't lose focus."

With a final glance at one another, they stepped into the void.

The Hall of Echoes

The darkness enveloped them, and for a moment, it felt as though they were floating in an endless abyss. Then, the ground solidified beneath their feet, and faint lights flickered to life, revealing a long, narrow corridor. The walls were made of black stone, polished to a mirror-like sheen.

As they moved forward, the reflections in the walls began to shift. At first, they showed only distorted images of the trio. But soon, the reflections grew sharper, more vivid—scenes from their pasts playing out like ghostly projections.

Kael's reflection showed him standing over Talia's lifeless body, his hands stained with blood. He turned away, his jaw tightening.

Seris's reflection showed her standing before a burning village, her face illuminated by the flames. Her expression was one of cold detachment, but her eyes betrayed a deep pain.

Caden's reflection was the worst. It showed him kneeling in the ruins of a battlefield, his comrades lying dead around him. His expression was one of raw anguish, his hands clutching at the dirt.

"These aren't real," Kael said firmly, his voice cutting through the heavy silence. "They're just illusions."

"Doesn't make them any easier to watch," Caden muttered, his voice strained.

Seris hesitated, her gaze fixed on her reflection. The flames flickered, and for a moment, she looked as though she might reach out to it.

"Seris," Kael said sharply, snapping her out of her trance. "Keep moving."

She nodded, tearing her eyes away from the reflection and following him down the corridor.

The First Trap

The corridor widened into a circular chamber, its floor covered in intricate patterns of glowing runes. At the center stood a pedestal, atop which rested a black crystal that pulsed with a sinister light.

"Anyone else getting a bad feeling about this?" Caden asked, his dagger at the ready.

Kael approached the pedestal cautiously, his sword raised. "It's a trap. Be ready."

As he reached for the crystal, the runes flared to life, and the walls of the chamber began to shift. From the shadows emerged humanoid figures, their bodies made of jagged stone and their eyes glowing red.

"Guardians," Seris said, her voice grim. She stepped forward, her hands glowing as she prepared her magic.

The first Guardian lunged at Kael, its movements surprisingly quick for its bulky form. He parried its strike, his sword sparking against its stone body. Another Guardian charged at Caden, who rolled out of the way and slashed at its leg with his dagger.

"Seris, the crystal!" Kael shouted, blocking another strike.

Seris nodded, weaving through the chaos as she chanted an incantation. Her magic flared, and a blast of energy knocked one of the Guardians back.

As she reached the pedestal, the crystal began to pulse faster, and a deep, guttural voice filled the chamber:

"You are unworthy."

The crystal shattered, and a wave of dark energy erupted from the pedestal, knocking the trio to the ground.

The Revelation

When the dust settled, the Guardians were gone, and the chamber was eerily silent. But the pedestal was no longer empty. In place of the crystal, a black, rune-covered orb hovered, emanating a chilling aura.

Kael pushed himself to his feet, his gaze fixed on the orb. "What is that?"

"It's a fragment of the Labyrinth's core," Seris said, her voice filled with awe and fear. "This place… it's alive, and that's its heart."

As Kael reached for the orb, the Void within him surged, its presence overwhelming. He froze, his hand trembling.

"Kael?" Seris asked, concern in her voice.

The orb began to glow, and a voice echoed in Kael's mind: "You are the chosen vessel. Embrace the power, or be consumed."

Kael's vision blurred, and he saw flashes of a dark future—himself standing alone amidst a sea of destruction, his sword dripping with blood, the Void consuming everything around him.

"No," Kael muttered, his voice barely audible.

The orb's glow intensified, and the voice grew louder: "You cannot deny your destiny."

Kael's grip on his sword tightened, and he forced himself to step back. "I choose my own path," he said firmly, his voice cutting through the voice in his mind.

The orb dimmed, and the oppressive aura faded.

Seris stepped forward, her eyes scanning Kael's face. "Are you okay?"

Kael nodded, though his expression was grim. "We need to destroy this place. All of it."

Caden glanced at the orb warily. "And how do we do that without getting ourselves killed?"

Seris's eyes glowed faintly as she examined the orb. "There's a way," she said finally. "But it's going to cost us."

Kael's expression hardened. "Whatever it takes."
