The golden light of the temple seemed almost oppressive as Kael stood before the council of robed figures. Their collective presence was overwhelming, radiating both wisdom and judgment.
"Kael of the Eclipse Chain," the central figure said, their voice reverberating through the chamber. "The shadows cling to you, but you have shown the will to resist them. Before the Order can teach you, we must understand the depth of your resolve and the purity of your intentions."
Kael clenched his fists, his heart pounding. He had come so far, but the weight of their scrutiny was suffocating.
"What must I do?" he asked, his voice steady despite the tension.
The figure gestured toward a massive archway that shimmered with an iridescent light. "You will enter the Sanctum of Reflections. Within, you will face your true self. Your fears, your desires, your memories—all will be laid bare. Succeed, and you will be one step closer to mastering the shadows. Fail, and the darkness will consume you."
Kael's stomach churned. This wasn't just another fight. It was a test of his soul.

Into the Sanctum
The shimmering light of the archway swallowed him whole as he stepped through, leaving the familiar world behind. For a moment, there was nothing but silence and darkness. Then, the world shifted.
Kael found himself standing in a strange, ethereal landscape. The ground beneath his feet was a mirror, reflecting a sky that pulsed with swirling shades of gold and black. The air was thick, making every breath a struggle.
"Welcome," a voice echoed, soft and cold.
Kael spun around to see a figure standing a few paces away. His blood ran cold as he recognized the face—it was his own. But this version of him was different. Its eyes were pools of inky blackness, and its expression twisted into a cruel smirk.
"I've been waiting for this," the doppelganger said, its voice dripping with malice.
Kael raised his sword instinctively. "You're another shadow. I've dealt with your kind before."
The shadow chuckled. "Oh, I'm not like the others. I'm the real you—the one you've buried deep inside. And I'm here to show you the truth."

The Test of Truth
The shadow Kael attacked without warning, moving with a speed and precision that Kael could barely match. Their blades clashed, the sound reverberating through the strange void.
"You think you're a hero?" the shadow sneered as they fought. "You're no savior. You're a tool, a pawn in a game you don't even understand."
Kael gritted his teeth, deflecting a strike and countering with his own. "I don't need to understand everything to fight for what's right."
"What's right?" the shadow mocked, its laughter echoing. "Don't lie to yourself, Kael. You don't fight for justice or righteousness. You fight because you're afraid. Afraid of being powerless. Afraid of being forgotten."
Kael faltered for a moment, the words striking a nerve. The shadow pressed its advantage, its blade grazing his side. Pain flared, and Kael stumbled back, his breathing ragged.
"Face it," the shadow said, circling him like a predator. "You don't want to save the world. You want to control it. To bend it to your will. That's why the Void chose you."
Kael shook his head, anger and frustration boiling within him. "You're lying!"
"Am I?" the shadow said, its voice softening. "Think about it, Kael. You've felt the power of the shadows, haven't you? Their promise of strength, of freedom. And you liked it. You wanted more."
The shadows around Kael stirred, responding to his inner turmoil. The truth of the shadow's words lingered in his mind, stirring doubts he had tried to suppress.

The Choice
Kael fell to his knees, his sword slipping from his grasp. The reflection loomed over him, its smirk widening.
"You can't fight me," it said. "Because I am you. And deep down, you know I'm right."
For a moment, Kael felt the urge to give in. To let the shadows take over. It would be so easy, so freeing.
Then, a memory surfaced. His sister's laughter. His mother's gentle smile. The warmth of home before everything was torn apart.
"No," Kael said, his voice trembling but resolute. "You're wrong."
The shadow paused, its smirk faltering.
"I don't fight for control," Kael continued, pushing himself to his feet. "I fight for the people I've lost. For the ones who still believe in me. For a future that's worth living in."
He reached for his sword, the shadows around him receding as he steadied himself. "You're a part of me, yes. But you're not all of me. And you never will be."
The reflection's expression twisted into one of rage. "You're a fool, Kael. You'll never be free of me."
"Maybe not," Kael said, leveling his sword. "But I'll fight you every step of the way."
With a roar, the reflection lunged at him, its form dissolving into a mass of writhing shadows. Kael didn't hesitate. He swung his sword with all his strength, the blade slicing through the darkness.
There was a blinding flash of light, and then… silence.

Emerging from the Trial
Kael opened his eyes to find himself back in the temple's grand hall. The council stood before him, their expressions unreadable.
"You have faced your reflection and emerged victorious," the central figure said. "You have proven your resolve. The Order of Lumina will guide you on your path—but be warned. The darkness within you is cunning. It will find new ways to tempt you."
Kael nodded, his grip on his sword tightening. "I understand. And I'll be ready."
Caden stepped forward, clapping a hand on Kael's shoulder. "Not bad, kid. You've come a long way."
Kael managed a small smile. "Thanks. But this is just the beginning, isn't it?"
Caden smirked. "You have no idea."
As the council dispersed, Kael couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching him. The shadows within him were quieter now, but they weren't gone. And somewhere out there, the Voidmaster was waiting.
