Chapter 28 - 28:Without you

Queen Rosalyn donned elegance and grace in her cell. Her hands rested on her knees as her nails pricked into her skin.

King Edmund, her husband, had crossed all his limits by getting her and her son arrested. She saw the glimmer in his eyes when he ordered her arrest, she knew he got her out of the way to make room for Diane.

Her heart cried out for her son, who was new to royal politics and was about to face trial for the first time. The members of the council that will hear Angelus's case are her husband's men. They were loyal to the king and wouldn't favor Angelus.

She feared they might send him into exile or worse. Her heart skittered helplessly, fear for her son crippling her. Queen Rosalyn lived for her children and she would die were she to see any of them harmed.

The wheels in her head turned, trying to come up with a solution to the problem they faced. One which assured her son's safety from her husband's cruelty.

Queen Rosalyn gritted her teeth in frustration. She thought of burning the castle down when no idea came to mind. Her mind was too clouded with anger and murderous scenes of the king and his royal Mistress.

"I'll avenge all the defeat I've suffered at your hands so far, Diane," she angrily bellowed.

The king's mistress has long snatched her peace of mind since the day she moved into the palace. Because of Diane and her children, her children had to live in the shadows, constantly walking on glass around their father in their own house.

"If anything happens to my son, I won't spare any of you," she let out the threat in the silence of the room.

"I greet you, my queen," Captain Davon arrived outside her cell with a platter of food for her. "I brought your food," he informed her.

Queen Rosalyn shook her head from side to side to refute his kind gesture. She had no appetite, she was too angry to muster the energy to eat when her son's life was hanging on by a thread on the king's word.

Captain Davon unlocked her cell and walked in with the platter. He set it down next to her and sat down beside her. He leaned in, close enough to ensure what he was about to say was heard by her and her alone.

"Your crazy son has done it again," he whispered.

"I'm aware Davon. That's why we are in this situation," Queen Rosalyn fired bitterly.

"No, no, I'm not talking about his attack on Prince Augustus," Captain Davon quickly dispelled the train of her thoughts. "He's attacked and crippled Werthingham city in one night. The chaos in the palace is intense; the subjects are panicked, and the king and his council are cornered on the way out of the trouble he created," he brought to light all that Werthingham city woke up to.

Queen Rosalyn's eyes went wide with surprise; cold chills ran down her spine as she learned of how far her son went to get even for getting arrested. She spent her life raising Angelus and never once did she imagine him capable of the cruelty he displayed in the last few days.

She feared watching the man he loved marry his sister and having his birthday canceled broke something in him. Queen Rosalyn clenched her fist around the hems of her dress, guilt washing over her body over how Gael's matter played out.

Queen Rosalyn had a part to play in separating Angelus and Gael; it was to secure his place for the crown, but she still wounded the apple of her eye. It was inexcusable.

"How did he do all this? Does he have a secret army we don't know about? Where did he get the funds to finance the army and the attack?" She overwhelmed Captain Davon with her inquiries.

Questions Davon had no answers to, Prince Angelus became more of a mystery to him with each passing day. When he thinks he understands him truly, the man surprises him by making an unexpected move.

"How do we play this out? Prince Angelus has the king cornered, the situation is to our advantage, my queen," Captain Davon reported to her.

Queen Rosalyn rose from her seat, a glimmer of hope blossoming in her eyes. Where she couldn't find a solution to their problem, her son managed to corner the ruling houses in a corner.

"I'll take responsibility for the attack. Send word to the king and inform him that the crisis won't be averted until I'm heard," he ordered.

It was better for her to be at the front of the attack. Have the king and his council be fearful of her and not her son. She knew the world to be cruel to powerful people, she hated the idea of having her son be a target for the people's rage.

"Inform Angelus of my decision. He's done his part, and now I'll finish this," Queen Rosalyn wore a determined look on her face.

She felt empowered by her son and how far he was willing to go to right the king's wrongs. It gave her the confidence to rise above their current predicament and hold her head high.

"My queen! My queen!"

Estella came running into the prisons, short of breath and her appearance messy. She formally gave a curtsy to the queen to greet her.

"What happened Estella?"

"It's th... it's the pr...it's Prince Angelus," she struggled to let out in between panting for breath.

"What about me son?" Her voice roared as she panicked.

"He's petitioned an audience with the king moments back. From what I gather, he's taking responsibility for the attack in the city," Estella reported.

Queen Rosalyn grew pale. Her heart thundered exotically against the walls of her chest. Fear streamed down her body at the repercussions of Angelus's move.

"I'll go to him right now," she uttered. The three of them raced out of the cell with the king's throne as the destination in their minds.

Worries echoed in her heartbeat. The light dimmed in her eyes; she crossed her fingers for her son's safety; Sevigoria wasn't home without Angelus. Her feet carried her hastily around the corners of the castle she had to cover to reach the king's throne room.

'Please be safe my son. I can't live here without you,' she thought internally.
