Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

In the middle of a small American town.

The road was dirty, the snow had started to melt and had thus combined with the grime that had been previously covered under it.

Creating a type of disgusting slush that would splash all over your clothes.

Cars drove past one by one, similarly dirtied as they headed to different locations, different homes.

A young teen was standing on the side of this road, looking up at the dark sky that was completely covered by clouds.

'It's going to start snowing again soon.' The teen thought before lowering his head and releasing a deep sigh that seemed to come from the depths of his soul.

A soul too tired to belong to someone so young.

Turning around, the young teen started walking down the road.

With short black hair and piercing blue eyes that resembled a frosty lake, the teen gave off the feeling of a model.

He would have fit the image perfectly if his body had been less malnourished however as he was currently.

'How long has it been? Around seventeen years.' The Teen thought as he walked down the road, his mind clouded with thoughts of a time long gone.

Of an unreachable place.

Of a World that no longer existed.

Minutes turned into hours before the teen arrived in front of a small house at the edge of the town.

The house looked old, old as in half of it looked uninhabitable whilst the other half looked like an animal shelter.

Walking to the front door, The teen pushed the door open, it hadn't even been locked.

*Creeek*

With a loud creaking sound, the door was pushed open fully, revealing the interior.

There was only a small bed in the middle of what looked like a living room.

On the right side of the room was a small stove with a pile of chopped wooden logs to the side.

Closing the door behind him, he walked to the stove, dropped his backpack to the side and immediately started taking a couple of chopped logs and placing them inside before taking a small piece of newspaper and lighting it on fire.

After a minute or so of trying, the fire finally caught wind and it engulfed the wooden logs fully.

*Sigh*

Releasing a low sigh, that created a mist in front of his face, the teen got up on his feet before taking his backpack and walking to the small bed in the middle of the room.

Laying down on the bed, the teen took out a notebook and pen from the backpack.

Opening the notebook whilst he covered himself with a small blanket, the young man stared at the first page.

[ Name: Arthur Moriarty ]

That was his name, at least his current name.

Under it another name was written.

A Past, long unused name.

[ Name: John A. Ross ]

Using his index finger to hover over the name, Arthur felt a pang in his heart, a pang which he chose to ignore.

Turning the pages quickly, Arthur started writing what he had done during the day.

After writing three line's however, Arthur stopped and closed the notebook.

[ I Woke up. ]

[ I went to school. ]

[ I came back home. ]

It was a hard life, at least compared to his last one.

He had to starve himself on the daily so that he could continue living and going to school.

He had to ignore the whispers, he had to ignore the jeering faces in school who spoke of disgusting things behind his back every day.

However, Arthur still had a thought in his mind.

'It's still a good life. I have a house, I can eat warm meals that I cook myself. It's just a little harder than what I was used to.'

Plopping the notebook down, Arthur took a new book from his backpack.

English.

Chemistry.

Physics.

Mathematics.

Spanish.

Biology.

Geography.

Astronomy.

He spent time on every single subject, reading the same lines of text that he had read tens of times before, over and over.

He didn't have anything else to do. He couldn't go out an play in the snow, getting sick would be the death of him.

Not to mention the fact that wasting that much energy would similarly be the death of him.

All he did, every single day was study, study and study.

He wasn't even good at it however.

It had become a sort of mantra by now.

It wasn't that Arthur enjoyed it, he had always liked reading however he had also always hated science books, they were too strict, too mundane for his taste.

He had always preferred books about mythology, fiction books that described the unreal, the supernatural.

Midnight quickly arrived, dropping the Astronomy book down, Arthur turned around in his bed and curled his body up before closing his eyes.

The fire had died off a while ago however thankfully the room had still maintained its heat.

'Goodnight.' Arthur thought to himself.

Sleep took over quickly, giving him its soft embrace and shielding him from his thoughts that seemed to never end.

Hours passed once more, the moon giving away to the sun which rose up in the horizon and covered the entire world in its shine.

It was seven in the morning when Arthur's eyes twitched slightly, opening fully a moment later.

He had woken up almost frozen, his entire body shivering from the cold that had taken hold of the living room.

Getting up from the bed, he quickly lit up the stove once more.

It was supposed to be used to cook food however he had turned it into a heater of sorts.

'I'll have to go hunting again soon.' Arthur thought as he packed his books back into his backpack once more.

Turning to the side, he headed towards what looked like a run down kitchen.

Opening the fridge, Arthur took out a brown cloth and headed back toward the stove.

Opening the cloth, Arthur took a piece of red meat outside, it was a snow rabbit that he had hunted the other day.

'This is the last one.' Arthur thought as he placed the meat on the stove.

*Sigh*

Another sigh escaped his mouth.
