"I lost, Satoshi. Your Pokémon are really amazing," the bug catcher Cole said reluctantly, looking at his fainted Butterfree.
"I just got lucky. By the way, Cole, what are you looking for? Do you need any help?"
Satoshi put away his thoughts of future battles and turned his focus to completing the task at hand. He needed to make sure he triggered the next phase of the hidden mission.
[Hidden Task Trigger Condition #2: After defeating Bug Catcher Cole, ask if he needs help]
"I'm looking for Pokémon with greater potential. My Butterfree and Beedrill are fine, but I feel like their potential is lacking. I'm searching for a Caterpie and a Weedle with better potential. Could you help me find them?"
> "Ding! Bug Catcher Cole has requested your help. You've triggered the hidden mission: Find Pokémon with Greater Potential!"
"Mission Objective: Capture one Caterpie and one Weedle with potential higher than Cole's Pokémon. Do you accept the mission?"
"Finally, the hidden mission!"
Satoshi smirked.
He knew from his past life how rare and valuable hidden missions were. In Pokémon Generations, the NPCs didn't typically offer tasks outright; players had to seek them out and meet specific conditions to trigger them. This realism made tasks, especially hidden ones, feel more immersive—and incredibly rewarding.
However, Satoshi also knew the truth behind this realism: the world of Pokémon Generations was more than just a game. It was real.
"Of course! I'll help you find them. As a matter of fact, I just caught a Caterpie and a Weedle with elite potential. Would those work?"
Satoshi opened his Pokédex and displayed the stats of the Pokémon he'd caught earlier.
[Name: Caterpie
Potential: Elite
Name: Weedle
Potential: Elite]
Cole's eyes lit up with excitement. "Elite potential? Really? Let me see!"
Satoshi handed over the Poké Balls containing the Caterpie and Weedle. Cole released them, carefully observing the Pokémon before checking the stats with his own Pokédex.
"These are amazing! Thank you so much! Here, take these as a token of my gratitude."
> "Ding! You have completed the hidden mission: Find Pokémon with Greater Potential!"
"Rewards: +5000 Alliance Coins, Skill Machine [Iron Tail], Skill Machine [Double Team], and 10 Ultra Balls."
"Bug Catcher Cole's favorability toward you has increased."
Satoshi accepted the rewards calmly, though inwardly he was thrilled. If he had sold the Caterpie and Weedle to another player, he might've earned even more Alliance Coins, but he didn't mind. Hidden mission rewards often included items that money couldn't buy.
"Just as I thought," he muttered. "The rewards are much better in this version. In my previous life, this mission only gave 1000 Alliance Coins and a single Skill Machine [Double Team]. Now, I've got Ultra Balls and an Iron Tail Skill Machine too."
Satisfied, Satoshi watched as Cole left to continue his journey. "He's probably heading to Viridian Forest now," Satoshi thought.
"Charmander, Froakie, come here. I've got something for you."
Satoshi called over his two Pokémon, taking out the Skill Machines he had just received.
> "Ding! Charmander can learn [Iron Tail]. Do you want to use it?"
"Yes. Don't ask me again—just use it automatically."
> "Ding! Charmander has learned [Iron Tail]!"
> "Ding! Charmander has learned [Double Team]!"
> "Ding! Froakie has learned [Double Team]!"
Satoshi nodded in approval as he watched his Pokémon test out their new moves.
Charmander activated Double Team, creating multiple identical clones that surrounded it. Froakie followed suit, generating several realistic copies of itself.
"This skill is incredibly versatile," Satoshi thought. "It's perfect for dodging attacks and confusing enemies. Almost any Pokémon can learn it, and it's going to be a lifesaver in tougher battles."
Next, Satoshi turned his attention to Iron Tail.
"Charmander, let's test this out."
Charmander nodded, focusing as its tail began to glow with a bright, metallic sheen. It dashed toward a nearby tree, jumping up and swinging its glowing tail.
CRACK!
The tree splintered where Charmander's tail struck, eventually snapping in half and crashing to the ground.
Satoshi grinned. "That's some serious power. This move has a base power of 100 in the game, and it can also lower the opponent's defense. A great addition to Charmander's arsenal."
He glanced at Froakie. "Too bad you don't have a tail, Froakie, or you'd get this move too."
"Quack..." Froakie tilted its head, seemingly unbothered.
"Well, no point dwelling on that. We've outgrown this area anyway. Charmander, Froakie, let's head to Viridian City and then the Viridian Forest. This place isn't worth our time anymore."
End of Chapter.
