Chapter 3 - LINGERING THOUGHT II

MATED TO MY ALPHA MATE

The city was alive as always, its streets humming with the sounds of chatter, honking cars, and the occasional street musician playing for tips. Diva leaned on her balcony railing, her hands wrapped around a steaming mug of tea. She loved the view from her apartment, a mix of tall buildings and the open sky, but today, her mind wasn't at ease.

The night before still lingered in her thoughts. The sound of that car engine had felt too deliberate, too close. She shook her head, trying to dismiss it. Maybe she was just overthinking things, letting her imagination run wild.

"Morning, Diva!" Jason called from inside, his voice carrying through the open balcony door.

"Morning," she replied, stepping back inside. Jason was busy scrolling through his phone, probably checking his endless social media feeds.

"Guess what?" he said, a sly grin on his face.

"What now?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Mikael texted me," he said, his grin widening.

Diva froze mid-sip. "Why is he texting you?"

"Relax, he's not proposing or anything," Jason teased. "He wanted to make sure you're okay. Apparently, you didn't sound too convinced last night when you told him everything was fine."

Diva groaned, placing her mug on the counter. "I told him I was fine. Why does he have to check up on me through you?"

"Because he cares, obviously," Jason said, shrugging. "And honestly, I think it's sweet. Not everyone has someone looking out for them like that."

Diva didn't respond. Instead, she grabbed her phone and scrolled through her messages. Sure enough, there were a few unread ones from Mikael.

Mikael: "Morning, Diva. Did you sleep okay?"

Mikael: "I'm heading out for errands later. Let me know if you want me to drop by."

Mikael: "Jason said you'd probably act stubborn, so I'll just be around if you need anything."

She couldn't help but smile. Mikael was persistent, but it was hard to stay annoyed at him.

Jason smirked from the couch. "You're smiling. Admit it, you like the attention."

"Shut up," Diva said, throwing a pillow at him. "It's not like that."

"Sure, sure," he replied, dodging the pillow with ease.

Diva shook her head and grabbed her jacket. "I'm going out."

"Where to?" Jason asked, looking up from his phone.

"Just out," she said vaguely, slipping on her sneakers.

"Alright, don't forget to call your 'concerned knight' if you see another suspicious car," he said with a wink.

Diva rolled her eyes as she closed the door behind her.

The streets were busy as usual, but Diva found solace in the chaos. It was easy to blend in, to let the noise drown out her thoughts. She wandered aimlessly for a while, passing familiar shops and cafes until she found herself at her favorite park.

The fountain in the center sparkled under the sunlight, and she sat on a nearby bench, letting the sound of rushing water calm her nerves.

"Diva," a voice said, pulling her out of her thoughts.

She looked up to see Mikael standing there, holding two cups of coffee. "Fancy meeting you here," he said with a grin.

"How do you always know where to find me?" she asked, crossing her arms.

"I have my ways," he said mysteriously, handing her one of the cups. "Thought you might need a caffeine boost."

She took the cup, muttering a soft "thanks."

"So," Mikael began, sitting next to her, "are you going to tell me what's really bothering you?"

Diva stared at the coffee in her hands, debating whether to open up or brush him off. But Mikael's presence had a way of making her feel safe, even when she didn't want to admit it.

"It's just... weird," she finally said. "That car from yesterday, the one I mentioned—it felt like it was following me again last night. I don't know, maybe I'm just being paranoid."

Mikael frowned, his playful demeanor shifting to concern. "That doesn't sound like paranoia to me. Did you get a good look at the car?"

She shook her head. "It was too dark, and I didn't want to stick around to find out."

"Well, I don't think you should be walking around alone until we figure this out," he said firmly.

"I'm not a child, Mikael," Diva replied, rolling her eyes. "I can take care of myself."

"I'm not saying you can't," he said, his tone softening. "I just think it's better to be cautious. Whoever's in that car clearly has a reason for following you, and I don't like the sound of that."

Diva sighed, sipping her coffee. She hated feeling like she needed protection, but deep down, she knew Mikael had a point.

"Fine," she said reluctantly. "But don't go overboard, okay? I don't need a full security detail."

"Deal," he said, smiling again. "Now, how about we talk about something less creepy? Like how you're going to finally admit my coffee tastes better than Jason's pancakes."

Diva laughed, shaking her head. "Don't push your luck."

They spent the rest of the afternoon chatting and laughing, the tension from earlier slowly melting away. Mikael's presence was a reminder that not everything in her life was uncertain—some things, like their friendship, were steady and reliable.

But as the sun dipped lower in the sky and they parted ways, that familiar unease crept back in. Diva couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her. She glanced over her shoulder as she walked home, her eyes scanning the street for anything out of the ordinary.

When she finally reached her apartment, she locked the door behind her and leaned against it, taking a deep breath. Jason was sprawled on the couch, munching on a bag of chips.

"Back already?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Yeah," she replied, kicking off her shoes. "Just tired."

Jason studied her for a moment but didn't press. "Well, if you need me, I'll be here, working on my chips-and-movie marathon."

Diva managed a small smile as she headed to her room. She collapsed onto her bed, staring at the ceiling.

Something was happening—something she didn't understand. And while Mikael and Jason could offer comfort, she knew she had to figure this out on her own.

For now, all she could do was hope that tomorrow would bring some answers.
