The morning sun filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows across the forest floor. Xiao Yan stood at the edge of a cliff, gazing out over the sprawling greenery. His hands were clasped behind his back, the very image of tranquility—until something tugged at his sleeve.
Xiao Gui, the small turtle, was hanging from his robe, gnawing determinedly on the fabric.
"Again?" Xiao Yan sighed, plucking the turtle off and holding it at arm's length. "I've told you, Xiao Gui. My robe is not a snack."
Xiao Gui blinked at him, unrepentant, and snapped its jaws at the air.
Before Xiao Yan could issue another lecture, a fiery blur darted past his face, singeing a lock of his hair. He raised a hand to pat out the small flame, turning to see Xiaojin perched smugly on a nearby branch, puffing its chest out as though declaring victory.
"You're proud of this, I assume," Xiao Yan said, brushing ash from his robes.
Xiaojin chirped, flapping its tiny wings. Xiaolong, not to be outdone, leapt from the undergrowth and landed with a heavy thud, shaking the ground. The young Shenlong reared back, puffing out smoke and sparks from its snout as it let out a high-pitched growl that sounded more like an enthusiastic bark.
Xiao Yan sighed deeply, pressing his fingers to his temples. "Why do I feel as though I've adopted three troublemakers rather than one?"
Xiaojin hopped down from the branch, joining Xiaolong and Xiao Gui as they crowded around Xiao Yan's feet. Despite their antics, he couldn't help but feel a growing fondness for them.
"Very well," he said, crouching down to their level. "If you're so determined to stay at my side, you might as well make yourselves useful. There is much to discover on this island."
The exploration began with Xiaojin leading the way, darting ahead and chirping loudly whenever it found something remotely interesting—whether it was an unusual plant, a shiny rock, or, on one memorable occasion, its own reflection in a stream.
Xiao Yan followed at a measured pace, his spiritual sense sweeping the area. The faint traces of energy he had sensed earlier were becoming more distinct, like threads weaving a subtle pattern throughout the island.
"This place is no ordinary island," he murmured, pausing to examine a cluster of luminous flowers. "The energy here is fragmented, yet it resonates... as if connected to something larger."
Xiaojin chirped impatiently from up ahead, flapping its wings as though urging him to hurry. Xiao Yan glanced at the phoenix, then at Xiaolong, who was attempting to uproot a tree with its teeth. Xiao Gui, meanwhile, had managed to wedge itself into a hollow log and was currently stuck.
"Useful," Xiao Yan said dryly, freeing Xiao Gui with a gentle tug. The turtle blinked at him, completely unbothered.
The journey led them to a shallow cave hidden behind a curtain of vines. Xiaolong bounded forward, sniffing the air, before sneezing and unleashing a small burst of lightning that scorched the cave entrance.
"Patience, Xiaolong," Xiao Yan said, stepping inside.
The air within was cooler, tinged with a faint metallic scent. The cave walls glimmered faintly, embedded with veins of an unfamiliar crystal. Xiao Yan placed a hand against the stone, closing his eyes to sense the energy within.
"These crystals..." he murmured. "They're amplifying the island's natural energy. A formation, perhaps?"
Xiaojin hopped onto his shoulder, peering curiously at the crystals. Xiao Gui waddled over, attempting to bite one, only to recoil with an offended squeak when it failed to break off. Xiaolong sniffed at the ground, its tail wagging as it unearthed a cluster of smaller crystals with a satisfied snort.
Xiao Yan chuckled softly. "Even when you're causing trouble, you manage to find something useful."
Gathering a few of the crystals, Xiao Yan examined their structure more closely. They were imperfect, their energy fragmented, but they held immense potential.
"With proper refinement, these could be used to enhance a formation—or perhaps even create one," he mused. "But first, I must understand the source of this energy."
As they exited the cave, the sky was beginning to darken. Xiao Yan led the group back to the hill where they had spent the previous night. Xiaojin immediately flew to its perch, while Xiaolong sprawled out on the grass and Xiao Gui settled onto Xiao Yan's lap.
Sitting cross-legged, Xiao Yan closed his eyes, allowing his spiritual sense to expand. The island's energy pulsed faintly, like a heartbeat, guiding him toward a central point deep within the forest.
"A natural formation, hidden at the heart of the island," he murmured. "If I can unlock its secrets, I may be able to cultivate more effectively here—and ensure the island remains undisturbed."
Xiaojin chirped softly from its perch, as if in agreement. Xiao Yan opened one eye, glancing at the phoenix.
"You're not as aloof as you pretend to be, are you?" he said, earning a disgruntled squawk in response.
As the stars emerged, Xiao Yan gazed out over the island, a small smile playing at his lips. The challenges ahead were many, but he felt no anxiety—only quiet determination.
"Come," he said to his companions. "Tomorrow, we delve deeper. And perhaps this time, you'll manage not to burn, break, or bite anything important."
Xiaojin, Xiaolong, and Xiao Gui exchanged glances, their mischievous expressions suggesting that Xiao Yan's hope was, as always, overly optimistic.
