The morning sun bathed the island in golden light as Xiao Yan stood at the base of a steep hill. He had chosen this spot to meditate, drawn by the subtle flow of energy emanating from the land. But his peace was short-lived.
Xiaojin and Xiaolong had other plans.
"Xiaojin, stop that!" Xiao Yan's calm voice cracked slightly as he turned to see the young phoenix perched atop his head, tugging at his hair with its beak.
The phoenix squawked innocently, tilting its head as if to say, Who, me?
Before Xiao Yan could react, Xiaolong bounded over, his tail sending loose rocks tumbling down the hill. He barked—or what could pass as a bark for a Shenlong—and lunged forward, nipping at Xiaojin's tail feathers.
"Enough!" Xiao Yan grabbed Xiaolong's snout and gently pushed him back. "This is not a place for games!"
Xiaolong let out a sheepish whine, his tail thumping against the ground. Xiaojin, however, chirped defiantly and flapped its wings, sending a small puff of flames into the air. Xiao Yan barely dodged in time, his once-pristine robe now singed at the edges.
"Do you two intend to test my patience every day?" Xiao Yan sighed, brushing the ash from his sleeves. "One of these days, I might—"
A sudden pulse of energy interrupted his scolding. His sharp eyes turned toward the forest, where the faint resonance of qi grew stronger, more insistent.
"So, you've noticed it too," Xiao Yan muttered, addressing no one in particular. He gently placed Xiaojin on his shoulder and patted Xiaolong's head. "Come. It seems the island isn't done revealing its secrets."
The journey through the dense forest was anything but peaceful. Xiaolong, determined to "help," bulldozed his way through shrubs and low-hanging branches, his tail occasionally catching Xiao Yan in the leg. Xiaojin, on the other hand, flitted from tree to tree, chirping loudly at every bird it encountered, as if trying to assert dominance.
"Xiaojin, not everything needs to be a contest," Xiao Yan said as the phoenix puffed up at a particularly annoyed sparrow.
The phoenix ignored him, flapping its wings aggressively until the sparrow flew away in defeat. Xiaolong barked in approval, his tail wagging like an excitable dog.
"Unbelievable," Xiao Yan muttered. "I'm surrounded by children."
The forest eventually gave way to a wide clearing, its centerpiece a shimmering pool of water. The air here was thick with energy, the kind that made Xiao Yan's spiritual sense hum with anticipation.
But the clearing wasn't empty.
Two figures stood at opposite ends of the pool, glaring at each other. One was a much larger phoenix, its golden feathers radiating an intense heat. The other was a massive Shenlong, its scales gleaming like polished sapphire.
"Oh," Xiao Yan said, realization dawning. "Parents."
Xiaojin and Xiaolong froze, their mischievous energy evaporating instantly. The young phoenix hopped off Xiao Yan's shoulder, while the young Shenlong slunk behind his legs, both suddenly very interested in the ground.
The larger phoenix turned its gaze toward Xiao Yan, its eyes sharp and piercing. Who dares trespass upon this sacred ground?
Before Xiao Yan could answer, the Shenlong's deep voice rumbled through the clearing. And who is this mortal accompanied by our unruly offspring?
Xiao Yan raised a brow, looking down at the two guilty creatures huddling near his feet. "Unruly seems to be putting it lightly."
The confrontation began with a tense silence. Xiao Yan stepped forward, his movements calm and deliberate. He inclined his head slightly, a gesture of respect.
"I am Xiao Yan," he said. "I mean no harm to this place. These two..." He glanced down at Xiaojin and Xiaolong. "...have chosen to follow me, though their behavior leaves much to be desired."
The larger phoenix flared its wings, golden flames licking at the edges of its feathers. You speak boldly, human. Why should we trust you with their care?
The Shenlong circled the pool, its massive tail stirring the water into gentle ripples. And what purpose brings you to our island?
Xiao Yan met their gazes evenly. "I have no intention of disturbing your home. I seek only to cultivate in peace. If their presence here is an issue, I will leave with them."
The two guardians exchanged a glance. For a long moment, neither spoke, their gazes fixed on Xiao Yan as though weighing his words.
Finally, the phoenix let out a soft trill, its flames dimming slightly. You speak with honesty, human. And yet, you carry an aura unlike any we have encountered.
The Shenlong nodded, its voice thoughtful. Your energy resonates with the island. It is as if this land has accepted you... though I cannot say why.
Xiao Yan inclined his head again. "Perhaps the island has its own reasons. Whatever they may be, I will honor its trust."
The larger phoenix regarded him for another moment before folding its wings. Very well. But know this, Xiao Yan: Should you bring harm to this island, or fail to guide these two properly, you will answer to us.
The Shenlong rumbled its agreement. And we will not be so forgiving.
Xiao Yan allowed a faint smile to touch his lips. "Understood."
As the guardians retreated, the tension in the clearing dissolved. Xiaojin and Xiaolong finally looked up, their sheepish expressions replaced with cautious relief.
"You two owe me an explanation," Xiao Yan said, crossing his arms. "Why do I get the feeling this isn't the first time you've caused trouble for them?"
Xiaojin let out a guilty chirp, while Xiaolong whined softly, nudging Xiao Yan's hand with his snout.
Xiao Yan sighed, shaking his head. "Fine. I suppose we're all learning together." He crouched down, placing a hand on each of their heads. "But from now on, no more trouble. Understood?"
Xiaojin chirped enthusiastically, and Xiaolong barked in agreement. Xiao Yan wasn't entirely convinced, but their enthusiasm was enough to earn them a small smile.
"Come," he said, rising to his feet. "We've seen enough excitement for one day."
As they made their way back to the hill, Xiao Yan couldn't help but glance back at the clearing. The energy there still lingered in his senses, a quiet reminder of the island's mysteries.
"This place truly is remarkable," he murmured. "Perhaps there's more to discover than I first thought."
Xiaojin and Xiaolong chirped and barked behind him, their antics already resuming. Xiao Yan sighed but didn't bother to scold them. After all, he was beginning to enjoy their company—trouble and all.
