Chapter 57 - Derby County vs. Huddersfield Town

Good afternoon, football fans, and welcome to a crisp Saturday at Pride Park! I'm Michael Andrews, here alongside my co-commentator, Jack Fletcher. We're moments away from kick-off between Derby County and Huddersfield Town in this Championship clash," Michael began, his voice brimming with anticipation.

Jack chimed in, "This should be a cracker, Michael. Derby County have been in fine form lately under Wayne Rooney, and the fans are buzzing about their wonderkid, David Jones, who's starting again today. But Huddersfield is no pushover—they'll be looking to spoil the party here."

The camera panned to the stands, packed with fans waving scarves and chanting at full volume. One particularly boisterous fan, Trevor, stood out, decked in a Derby County jersey, his face painted in black and white. He held up a homemade sign that read, "In Rooney We Trust!"

The teams walked out onto the pitch, greeted by a roar of cheers. Derby County's lineup included seasoned names like Wayne Rooney himself, Tom Lawrence, and young talents like Jason Knight, alongside fellow young talent David Jones.

As the referee blew the whistle, Derby immediately showed their intent, pressing Huddersfield high up the pitch.

"Derby are on the front foot already," Michael noted. "They're moving the ball quickly, with Jason Knight dictating the tempo in midfield."

Jason Knight intercepted an early Huddersfield pass and threaded the ball to Rooney, who orchestrated play with his trademark composure. The ball eventually found its way to David Jones on the wing.

"Here's Jones now," Jack called out. "He's been electric this season. Look at that pace!"

David darted past Huddersfield's full-back with ease and whipped in a low cross. The ball narrowly evaded Tom Lawrence's outstretched boot, drawing a collective "Ooooh!" from the crowd.

"That's a statement of intent, Jack. The young lad is fearless," Michael said.

Huddersfield responded with a counterattack, catching Derby momentarily off-guard. Their striker, Karlan Grant, fired a powerful shot, but Derby goalkeeper Ben Hamer dived expertly to his left to parry it away.

"Great save from Hamer!" Jack exclaimed. "Huddersfield reminding Derby they can be dangerous too."

The half continued with both sides creating chances but failing to break the deadlock. In the 40th minute, Wayne Rooney sent a curling free kick just wide of the post, and moments later, Huddersfield's Jonathan Hogg saw his header cleared off the line by Max Bird.

As the referee signaled for halftime, the score remained 0-0, but the tension in the stadium was palpable.

The second half began with renewed energy from Derby.

"Whatever Rooney said to the lads at halftime seems to have worked," Michael observed. "They're looking sharper and more aggressive."

In the 56th minute, Derby's persistence paid off. Jason Knight picked up the ball near the edge of the box, feinted past two defenders, and laid it off to Tom Lawrence, who unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner.

"WHAT A GOAL!" Jack shouted. "Tom Lawrence with a beauty! Pride Park erupts as Derby takes the lead!"

Tom Lawrence (1-0) Derby leads

The crowd went wild, Trevor among them. He jumped up and down, spilling his drink in the process but caring little as he shouted, "Come on, you Rams!"

In the stands, Chloe couldn't help but grin, her eyes glued to the pitch. "Not bad," she muttered, clearly enjoying the spectacle.

With Huddersfield pushing for an equalizer, spaces began to open up for Derby. In the 72nd minute, David Jones found himself in one of those spaces.

"Here's Jones," Michael said, his voice rising. "The young man has been quiet so far, but we know he only needs a moment."

Jason Knight spotted David making a run and delivered a perfectly weighted through ball. David surged forward, leaving the defenders in his wake.

"It's Jones, one-on-one with the keeper!" Jack yelled.

The stadium held its breath as David steadied himself. With a deft touch, he rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into the net.

"GOAL! DAVID JONES!" Michael roared. "The wonderkid delivers again! 2-0 to Derby County!"

The fans erupted in celebration, chanting David's name. Trevor waved his sign frantically, his voice hoarse from cheering. Even Chloe, trying to maintain her cool demeanor, let out a little cheer.

The final minutes saw Huddersfield desperately trying to claw their way back, but Derby's defense stood firm. Rooney marshaled the midfield, ensuring the Rams maintained control.

As the referee blew the final whistle, the scoreline read 2-0. The crowd roared in approval as the players exchanged hugs and high-fives.

"Another fantastic win for Derby County," Michael summarized. "Wayne Rooney's influence on this team cannot be overstated. And what a performance from the young David Jones—he's living up to all the hype."

"Absolutely, Michael," Jack agreed. "This lad is something special. A clean sheet, two goals, and three points—what more could the fans ask for?"

The camera lingered on David as he walked off the pitch, his face lit up with a mixture of joy and relief.

In the stands, Trevor turned to a fellow fan and declared, "Mark my words—David Jones is going to be a legend!"

As for Chloe, she simply smiled, her thoughts her own.

And then the days went by and David saw himself in a place he had only dreamt off.
