Chapter 7 - IS REAL SOPHIE NICE?

"Congratulations, you survived my brutal attack. So you aren't so weak after all, Sophie, or should I call you Maya? Well, I would call you Maya since everyone else does the same," so it was all part of fake Sophie's plan to get rid of me. But why?

"I know my life is sad; my room is barely empty, and my living conditions are terrible. On the other hand, you used to have a larger room; you had a study in your room and a walk-in closet; your parents even allowed you to drive, and I? I only got scraps from you Sophie. But that will change soon, or has already changed by the time you are reading this book"

"I am writing this in case things don't go as planned and somehow I don't switch with Sophie, lol. That is highly impossible, but the odds still exist; I wrote about how to know which twin you are close to at the end of the book. I do have plans of killing you, Sophie, but you are my sister after all, and since Dad died, my only sibling at that. I might just make you have blunt trauma on your head to make you lose your memory. I have been looking it up on Google, and you wouldn't believe this, but YouTube has a detailed tutorial on this. They claim it's for educational purposes and so are my actions."

"But before you go running to know if you truly are Sophie calm down, let's talk; you know, I have always admired you, Sophie. You always complained about not getting takeouts so now you can have enough of that for your lifetime. You complained about everything when you knew all I ever had was your leftovers; well, I am going to take everything from you. I want you to know what it feels like to have nothing; I want you to know what it feels like to be an outcast, a liar, a nuisance to society. I want you to know what it feels like to not be loved by everyone." The page ended, I couldn't help but feel sympathy for her as I read this book. I cannot remember the details, but I think I was an ungrateful child. To be frank, living with Mrs. Patal made life tough for me, and it might be what I needed. I was a wasteful person but now that I have nothing, what is there to waste?

"Well, if you want to know more about yourself, Sophie, I would advise you to get back your pink diary, the one you always locked and wrote all your secrets in. But who knows, I might be feeling generous if you beg me and I might give it to you. Oh how I have always hated the fact that mom made me play with you every day, she forced that friendship down my throat and now I would use it to my advantage"

"Funny how we are both identical twins; yes, Mom told me the truth one night when she was drunk; I doubt she remembers telling me, so she thinks I don't know. I don't think you look anything like me though, but Mom said it is the wig and a blue contact. If that's true, then why don't we trade places? Or maybe I should replay you forever"

"Be very careful; I have a well-detailed plan of how I would switch with you. So, if you like, show everyone this proof; the evidence is waiting for you. No one would believe a liar like you, Maya, now you know how it feels." I couldn't believe she knew all of this information back then.

"But if you want to earn some extra cash on the side, find out what killed Dad. The Grant would do anything to keep it a secret, so you can earn a couple of bucks with it for now. I don't know what it is but I will tell you some clues at the end of this book, I am feeling generous today"

"Keep your cool, baby girl; the more you lash out, the more you act just like Maya, me. The more you call me a liar, the more people don't believe you anymore. You know Mr Grant rules this town, so don't mess with him, darling."

"Stay away from Ethan, I repeat stay away from Ethan. He is mine now; you've had your chance, and you mishandled it." The sentence was written in bold letters which was odd.

"Knock" I heard soft knocking at my door.

"Maya are you back?" Mrs Patel asked, I'm still knocking at the door.

"Yes, ma," I answered.

"You have a guest" she yelled.

A guest? Who would want to see me and why today of all days? Allow me to read this book.

"Coming." I got up and adjusted my skirt, placed the notebook and all the bubble wrap under my bed, unlocked my door, and walked out. Let me get this over with, whoever it is.

"Hi, Maya," it was Caleb, and he was seated in the living room that had not been clean for months. I could see him hold himself as he looked very uncomfortable.

"Come, let's go to my room," I said, leading the way. Just like Grant, Caleb's grandparents are one of the pioneers of this town. This makes them extremely wealthy; they have a big mansion in the city center and one at the extreme edge of town. So I wondered. Why he wanted to be around me so much when he had a lot of other important things to do?

"Click." I proceeded to lock the door behind us; I wondered how he knew my home.

"Hey, you are not going to ask how I got here?" Caleb scanned my room before sitting on my bed.

"Was about to, honestly, but I thought the main reason why you are here is more important," I said, joining him on the bed.

"Okay then, I can always tell you later"

"That's right, I was studying for the test coming up soon." I wanted him to leave quickly; if I could make him do so right now, I would. I want to see the content of the book, I know I am Sophie but it would feel nice if this book confirms it.

"That's true, so I should be brief then," he said, adjusting his pants as he moved closer to me; my legs were touching him, and he placed his hands on mine.

"Sophie, there is something I have been dying to tell you. But I have been unable to ever since you and Ethan got together; it has always made me super jealous, and I never knew why." He said as he moved his hands to and from my hip, relaxing my nerves.

"Carry on," I urged him to continue with his speech.

"I know this is too much to ask, but I don't want to risk losing you, Sophie. So I want you to..." I yanked his hands off me as it was now making me comfortable, he wants me to cheat on my sugarplum?

He was going to say girlfriend, I just knew it. Why would I want to cheat on Ethan? And who in their right mind would want a pushover like Caleb?

"I am guessing that's a no, then," he said as I got up from my bed.

Ethan had access to a lot of things, and his parents were some of the people who broke the community guidelines without being apprehended. Well, I don't like him, but I could use the support, and what fool would I be if I chased away the only believable person who had faith in what I was saying?

"No, Caleb I'm sorry about my reaction. I am shocked, and that's all." I lowered my tone and walked back to him as I sat directly in front of him this time.

"So what are you saying then?" He asked still looking defeated.

"Give me some time; that's all I am asking for. My memory is still a bit messed up." I said trying to gain his sympathy as I placed my hands on his ears and stroked them gently.

"And how long would that be?" I just needed enough time to figure out myself, to know what that imposter planned to do. That's all, I just need a little time to read through that book and figure out my next call to action.

"A day, I will let you know tomorrow." I could see his face light up a bit; besides, what type of person would turn down this opportunity of wealth?

"Okay, why don't I ask you properly then? Would you like to have dinner with me?"

"Yes, I would." Finally, something better than the McDonald's I get every day, I would never pass on a chance to eat real food.

He looked so sweet and genuinely in love, but I didn't care; I needed the attention and all.
