Chapter 8 - WHO IS THE IMPOSTER?

8

"Drum," the sound of my alarm ringing woke me up immediately, "6:30 am? How come?" I switched it off, I believe I slept off while reading this stupid diary of the imposter.

"So you are interested in knowing who you are, you psychotic bitch" I skipped all other pages and jumped right into knowing which twin I was.

God, please let me be... I am Sophie lol, I just want to confirm. Like, somehow, the assurance from this book would make me feel better or something.

"But let me not keep you waiting anymore, Sophie and I are so different. The way we speak, walk, dress, and all. She did grow up with the Grants, after all, and they treat her like one of them. Oh, how I wish that was me; it will be soon enough." The more I read, the more it became clear that I felt a strong connection to Fake Sophie(Maya) when she wrote the book. I know it feels weird, but I believe her anger towards me is justified; stealing my life isn't, though, but if I were put in her shoes, I would do the same.

"It's simple: Sophie is allergic to chestnuts, and, I, on the other hand, am not. No one knows about this except me and Mom, I doubt she knows because Mom was the one who told me and she told the Grants that Sophie is scared of them"

Am I allergic to chestnuts? Well, I have not had any since the accident. I should go out and check for it.

"Oh by the way it's a mild allergy, nothing too serious so when I switch with her it wouldn't be something I need to fake also"

"Mom also said Sophie has a birthmark behind her left ear; it is tiny but still very efficient. It was a wavey line that wasn't more than 2cm long, at least that's what Mom said"

Birthmark?

"Lastly, Sophie is more petite than I am; the Grants want her as lean as she can be, so there you have it, Sophie. So who are you now?" There was a gap, enough for the person reading to write their name.

Well, I have gained weight from being paralyzed for a month and also eating all this junk my biological mom feeds me. I need to get chestnuts and how would I see the birthmark behind my ears? I can't do that when I am alone, what if I am...

"Good morning sunshine, remember we have a date at 1:00 pm at the Oakville Grand Mall. Is there anything you want me to get you before that?" A text from Caleb popped up on my phone.

This looks like the right opportunity to "chestnut, thank you. I will see you in school then," I replied as I got up to get ready for school. I couldn't believe that was it. Are we really that similar? I thought the difference between me and my evil twin would be a lot. A stranger would never know these things existed, to be frank.

"Bye, Mom, I'm off to school," I said as I walked out, heading to the bus stop as usual; how would I see the birthmark that is behind my ears? And come to think of it, why doesn't Maya have any distinction features of her own?

"Maya" I felt a light tap on my shoulder whilst walking to class.

"You don't seem to be accustomed to that name at all" Caleb smiled as he joined me.

"Hehe, Ethan," I heard her soft voice as she was walking right in front of us.

"Can you help me with something Caleb?" I pulled him to the side as I spoke.

"Yes, what is it?"

"Take a picture of my left ear for me," I asked as I stood still.

"Here," he said as he handed his phone over to me.

"There must be a mistake; I'm sure the book is wrong. Take that off my right ear; I asked as he did the same and handed his phone over to me.

"By the way, I couldn't find fresh chestnuts so I got the powdered one, here you go"

My entire body began shaking as I grabbed the chestnut powder from Caleb and ran toward the imposter.

I grabbed a handful of it and blew it all over her face. "Maya what's wrong with you"

I grabbed her left ear before she could react to the powder. 2cm wavy birthmark, there it was behind fake Sophie's ears just like the book said. So she isn't fake Sophie after all, she is the real Sophie? Does this mean that I am fake Sophie?

"Sophie, what the...?!" Ethan's voice was muffled as Sophie began itching her skin.

"Water...I need water," Sophie gasped, stumbling towards the sink. Running away.

Ethan followed closely behind her, helping Sophie rinse the powder off her face. But even as the water washed away the chestnut powder, Sophie's skin continued to react.

"Maya, what's going on?" Caleb grabbed me as I stood frozen, surprised as the events unfolded.

I began stumbling backwards looking for a wall or something to rest on.

"My head" I grabbed my head as I continued stumbling backward.

"Maya, Maya, Maya," celeb words began to blur as I began to feel light, my vision smooched together, my eyelids too heavy for me to open.

"Mayaaaaaa"

(2 hours later, in the school clinic)

"What was that powder you poured on Sophie?" Caroline's sweet voice was a bit tough, and her facial expression, which was usually stiff, showed a lot of concern.

"Mom, it's okay; I am fine," Sophie said.

"No, sweety, she should be punished for this," Ethan protested.

"Nothing, ma, it was an accident." I lowered my tone; if she found out that all of this was an experiment to know who the real Sophie was, then I would be in trouble.

"Nothing? Wow, so Sophie is allergic to nothing?" The pitch at which Caroline spoke got increasingly louder.

"That's what she does; I can see your memories have begun flooding that tiny brain of yours. She has always been troublesome; this is a college, but for some reason, Maya is causing problems by acting like a high schooler." Ruby opened her trap of a mouth and began spewing nonsense.

I hate her; I hate Sophie; I hate Mr and Mrs Grant; I hate Ethan; I hate the school; I hate my life; I hate everyone.

"I'm sorry," tears began running down my eyes; I was wrong all along. I was never Sophie.. I wrote that demonic book, I was the one who bribed Ava. I did it all; I'm a failure, after all. I am the one who is trying to be who I'm not; I am such a loser.

"Mrs. Grant, it was a mistake; I'm sure she didn't mean to cause any harm," Celebb backed me.

"Oh really, I wonder what your mom would say when she hears you are moving around with a commoner" Caroline began threatening.

"Hmm like your adopted daughter isn't a commoner too"

"How dare you? Sophie is my daughter, my flesh and blood, and no one can take her from me." Caroline was enraged by his statement; her voice was louder than his.

"Your flesh and blood? I thought it was all public information already. And none of this would get to my mom"

"Well, all I'm asking for is the name of the substance you poured on my daughter's face; she has never reacted to something like this before. So what did you do Maya?" Caroline's voice went back to its original pitch and softness as she bent over to look me in the eye.

"Tell me, Maya, or I will tell my husband to stop sponsoring your education." She wanted to instill fear in me, but I wouldn't budge. The reason why she was doing all this was more than just generosity; it was the same reason why she adopted Sophie. Dad's death is the reason all this is happening in the first place.

"Mrs Grant" Ruby called Caroline in order.

"Maya is awake now, and no one is severely hurt. I think we should all call it a day and head home" Ruby said as she gestured for everyone to leave the school premises.

What was she on? She was so rude, fat, and ugly, what a bitch. Now I sound similar to the psychopath who wrote that disgusting book; yes, I also did write it, so maybe I am a psychopath.

"You need some rest, why don't I take you home?" Celeb offered as we walked out of the nurse's office.

"Thank you" I smiled softly.
