Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Ashes

The wind howled through the Ashen Hollow as the group pressed onward, their steps muffled by the powdery ground beneath them. The storm had dissipated after the battle, leaving an eerie silence in its wake. Every so often, Ryn glanced over his shoulder, the memory of the Obsidian Order's ambush still fresh in his mind.

Frostfang walked by his side, its icy breath condensing in the sulfurous air. The Mistborn Stalker remained in the shadows, its keen senses attuned to the surrounding dangers. Kael's beast, a Phoenix Warden with flaming wings, soared above, its light illuminating the darkened terrain.

Elias, his staff acting as a walking stick, broke the silence. "This land holds grudges. Beasts born of fire and ash are drawn here for a reason."

Ryn's grip tightened on the Codex. "If the rumors are true, this place holds something ancient. Something the Codex is guiding us to."

Kael, walking slightly ahead, glanced back. "And something the Order wants just as badly."

Lyra's eyes scanned the horizon, her dagger ready. "Then we need to get there first."

...

They reached the heart of the hollow just as the ground beneath them began to tremble. Cracks formed in the earth, spewing jets of steam and embers. Frostfang growled, its icy aura intensifying, while Kael's Phoenix Warden descended, its wings flaring as if in warning.

"What now?" Lyra muttered, gripping her weapon tighter.

A deep, guttural roar echoed through the hollow. From the largest fissure emerged a towering beast, its body made of molten rock and magma. Its eyes glowed with fiery malice, and its massive claws raked the ground, leaving trails of lava.

Entity Identified: Infernal Colossus

Rank: Apex Ancient Guardian

Abilities: Magma Surge, Volcanic Armor, Cataclysmic Slam

"It's a guardian," Elias said, his voice tight with awe and fear. "It's protecting whatever lies beneath this place."

"Then we'll have to get through it," Ryn said, stepping forward.

Kael smirked, twirling her spear. "You don't back down, do you? I like that."

...

The Infernal Colossus roared, unleashing a wave of molten lava that surged toward the group.

"Frostfang, freeze the ground!" Ryn commanded.

The frost dragon roared, its icy breath cooling the lava and creating a temporary path. The Mistborn Stalker darted forward, its strikes aimed at the creature's joints, but the Colossus's Volcanic Armor absorbed the blows.

Kael's Phoenix Warden launched a barrage of fire-infused strikes, its flames clashing with the Colossus's molten body. Though powerful, the attacks seemed to only anger the beast.

"We need a coordinated strike," Ryn said, analyzing the Colossus through the Codex's interface. "Its core is in its chest. That's where it's weakest."

Kael nodded. "I'll draw its attention. You and Frostfang go for the core."

Ryn didn't hesitate. "Stalker, support Kael. Lyra, back me up."

Kael lunged forward, her spear glowing with fiery energy. The Colossus turned its attention to her, swiping with its massive claws. Kael dodged gracefully, her Phoenix Warden raining down attacks from above.

Ryn and Frostfang moved into position.

"Now, Frostfang! Ice Barrage on its chest!"

The frost dragon unleashed a concentrated blast of ice, striking the Colossus's core. The intense cold clashed with the molten heat, creating a deafening hiss.

"Lyra, go!"

Lyra darted forward, her dagger glowing with energy. With precision and speed, she plunged the blade into the weakened core.

The Colossus let out a final, earth-shaking roar before collapsing, its molten body cooling into blackened stone.

...

As the dust settled, a rumble shook the ground once more. The fissure where the Colossus had emerged widened, revealing a staircase carved into the rock.

Ryn approached cautiously, the Codex glowing faintly in his hands. "This is it. Whatever the Codex has been leading us to... it's down there."

Elias stepped forward, his expression grim. "Be careful. Ancient vaults like these are as much a trap as they are a treasure."

Kael adjusted her spear. "Then it's a good thing we've got a team like this."

Lyra smirked. "Let's hope it stays that way."

...

The staircase led to a vast underground chamber, its walls lined with glowing runes. At the center of the room stood a pedestal, and atop it rested a sphere made of swirling fire and light.

Item Identified: Emberheart Core

Function: Unlocks fire-based evolution paths and amplifies flame-element abilities.

Ryn's breath caught as the Codex flared in his hands, absorbing the Emberheart Core's energy. Information flooded the interface, revealing new possibilities for taming and evolution.

Evolution Paths Unlocked:

Blazewing Hatchling → Inferno Drake

Pyroclaw Cub → Emberfang Titan

Ashborne Serpent → Volcanic Wyrm

"This changes everything," Ryn whispered, awe in his voice.

Elias nodded slowly. "This kind of power is a double-edged sword. You'll need to decide carefully how to use it."

Kael crossed her arms, her expression thoughtful. "And how to keep it out of the wrong hands."

...

As the group prepared to leave the chamber, the sound of slow clapping echoed through the room.

They turned to see a familiar figure—one of the Obsidian Order's commanders, flanked by two shadowy beasts.

"Well, well," the commander said with a smirk. "You've done all the hard work for us. How thoughtful."

Ryn stepped forward, Frostfang growling at his side. "You'll have to fight us for it."

The commander's smirk widened. "Oh, I intend to."

The tension in the chamber thickened as both sides prepared for battle, the glow of the Emberheart Core casting ominous shadows across the room.
