Chapter 55 - The middle faction

The heavy door in the dark green fire slowly opened, Jared and Caroline slowly walked into the dark tower, and unlike before, this time in the deep secluded passage shot, Kula is standing there. Still half-asleep, holding a large doll in her arms. Behind her, two beautiful girls whom she has never met before, dressed in tight maid costumes, look at them with faraway smiles.

"Welcome brother and sister to the Tower of Shadows yo ..."

Kura's voice was still lazy, but Jared noticed the shifting black shadows reflecting on the ground change for a moment, then return to their original form after confirming that they weren't the enemy. If Caroline and Jared were enemies at the moment, they'd be in for a tough fight. Although he thought so, Jared didn't show any expression. He simply scanned the area without moving, and then walked towards Kura. The blue flames on both sides of the wall lit up one by one on the candles, illuminating and welcoming the two men as they made their way to the parlor.

"So Tawana is studying in the library? Are brother and sister here to pick her up?"

"That could be said, though. ..."

Jared hesitated, noticing that the maid behind Kura smiled kindly at them, looking as if she knew them well. Had they met somewhere before?

"There is something we would like to discuss with you, Kula."

  "Have a seat? Tea?"

Hearing these words, Kura did not show any curiosity or surprise, she just faintly stretched out her hand, with the usual "the sky is falling and I have nothing to do with it" lazy action to stretch out her hand, the gorgeous flowing robes accompanied by Kura's small movements like flowing water, and then one of the maids behind her smiled and came forward, respectfully handing tea and delicious snacks to both of them. One of the maids behind her smiled and came forward, respectfully and courteously handing over tea and delicious snacks for the two of them.

It looks delicious, but Jared didn't come here for tea.

"Kura, you do realize that Caroline and I were asked by the Academy President to protect Kelly."

Kura squinted her eyes, so motionless that one might even wonder if she'd fallen asleep.

"What do you think about this?"

Jared had made his point, and it was up to Kura to answer. Whether she agrees with the Academy President, or whether she's against it.

But Kula just shook his head.

"Kula doesn't know. Oh, Kula isn't interested in these things. Oh?"

  "..."

Jared and Caroline glanced at each other, it did seem very much like Kula's vague style of answering, but the two weren't in the mood to look at the moon in the fog right now.

(We know where we stand, Kula. If you're not willing to answer, then we'll have to do it our way.)

Considering that there are other people here besides them, the words were conveyed to Kula by Caroline through her "thought communication".

Kula didn't react at all, like an old monk in meditation.

  "Kula?"

  "..."

  "...?"

  "Phew ..."

  I'm asleep.

As he was in front of the two maids, Jared was naturally not in a good position to reach over and pat Kura's head, so he had to give a cold cough, which dragged Kura back to reality from her path to dreamland. She looked up in surprise, confused at being woken up." Ohhhh? Kura's asleep again, huh?"

"This is no time to sleep, is it?"

Jared looked up at the sky, but it was easy to lose track of time in the shadowy tower, which looked like night at any hour of the day. He stared at Kura, debating how much to say. Jared couldn't be too careful with this strange-looking girl. But he couldn't really treat her as a negotiation opponent, her attitude of seeming to be careless about everything and acting without persistence was really too diffuse, Jared felt that all of his own techniques would be very difficult to play a role in front of this girl.

People who want something and don't want something are easy to cheat, only those who can't even tell if they want something or not are the hardest to deal with.

Kula belongs to this most difficult category.

  Silence.

Just when they thought Kura had fallen asleep again, Kura slowly raised her head.

"Same as the older siblings, yo."

It was still a loose answer, but it was clear that Kura knew exactly what they were asking.

"Kula thinks that's all that matters, huh?"

  "I see."

Still talking in a cloud, but Jared seemed to have gotten her point, and stood up and nodded at Kura.

"Well, then, I guess we should be going."

"Well, brother and sister, take care."

Kura didn't get up, but sat on the couch and smiled weakly at both of them.

"You're always welcome to tea, whenever you want it?"

"Well, I think we'll be back later, the tea was delicious, thank you."

Jared replied with a shrug of his shoulders, not caring - though he hadn't even taken a sip of his tea.

But what Kura had just implied had put Jared in a very good mood. He knew exactly what Kura meant by what she said. So after receiving Tawana, the three of them went back towards Kylie's magic research room. From what Tawana said, the necromancy she was studying was really different from what everyone thought. It's not just an evil book that turns people into corpses, but it's a magic that speaks to the souls of the dead and seeks their help. The purpose of necromancy is to communicate with each other through the chanting of souls. The magic used by the necromancer we met in the Forest of the Undead is classified as death magic, not necromancy.

And according to Tawana, the first step to success in so-called Necromancy is to go to the graveyard and talk to the spirits to the point where they can have tea together.

Caroline would never go with her.

Jared doesn't even need to know that.

  "Huh?"

As they approached the magic lab, both Jared and Caroline froze, then they both stopped at the same time, holding Tawana back.

  "Did something happen?"

Seeing the two stop in their tracks, Tawana asked, a little uneasily.

"I'll go check it out, you stay here and protect Tawana."

Jared was silent for a moment, then quickly gave Caroline her orders. Caroline nodded her head slightly in agreement, and Jared quickly ran in the direction of the magic lab. He hid his body and watched the surroundings vigilantly while arriving at the front of the magic lab with great speed, and saw a scene that made Jared very puzzled: Kylie was coming out of the lab, and there were royal soldiers all around her. Kylie's expression only showed hesitation, not panic. A man in armor, but not wearing a helmet like the other soldiers, followed her and said something with a grave expression. Kelly answered in a low voice and looked around, apparently waiting for Jared to show up, but Jared didn't show up right away. Although he had already guessed a general, but when he saw one of the people in the group, Jared still subconsciously felt that something was not right. Then, Kelly followed the man helplessly out of the magic lab, and the soldiers also followed the evacuation, and soon left.

  (Jared, what's going on?)

"You and Tawana go back to the Tower of Darkness, there seems to be some trouble here."

After Jared had finished speaking, he hid himself again and followed quietly behind Kelly.

The reason he did was because among them, Jared saw a very familiar face.

The elf who had followed him before was currently escorting Kylie. Jared had only met her once, but since it was the first time he was followed by someone for no apparent reason, Jared's memory was quite vivid. When he discussed it with Caroline afterward, he thought that it might be sent by someone Florence knew before. But since a lot of things have happened since then, Jared put it behind him for a while. But now it was clear that something was going on, and the fact that the elf was traveling with Kylie was in itself very strange. Kylie didn't know Tawana, and she didn't know Jared and Caroline until afterward, so she couldn't have sent the elf to follow her, so who did?

Why is she following Kelly around?

Jared's pace slowed considerably, and he narrowed his eyes, watching the elf carefully, but not noticing anything at all.

But it was a good thing that the elf was here, just so he could see who the elf's handlers were, and maybe figure out why they were spying on Jared.

Kelly left the academy, then got into a carriage and quickly disappeared at the end of the street.

Jared gazed in the direction Kelly had gone, frowning slightly, realizing something was wrong.

It was exactly where he and Caroline had been before, in the direction of Kelly's house.
