Chapter 1 - Shadow Dragon System

Damion stared at the words before him with anger, his purple eyes burning with hatred.

"Is this a prank from one of those guys again?!" He said irritatedly as he staggered to his feets.

Bloodied and beaten, he could barely walk. However, he pushed himself up with all the strength he had, and trudged on with heavy steps towards the school's clinic.

It took everything in him not to pass out again from fatigue and pain, because he knew if he did, it was the same as forfeiting his life.

The distance between his location and destination was short, so he took each step carefully and slowly.

The journey would have been quite quiet and melancholic, but the glowing screen in his face was seriously pissing him off. He could barely see where he was stepping with the panel blocking his vision, and if he had his way, he would just lay there and fall asleep. But no!

He was still alive, and nothing was going to shake his will to live. Even if he had to climb a mountain with a bag of rocks slung behind him, or cross a sea on a canoe without a paddle, he would do it, as long as his life was on the line.

He basically didn't have a reason to live, nor a reason to continue suffering, but he just wanted to, not because he didn't want to live, but just so he could spite those who said he couldn't.

He chuckled in derision at his weird thoughts, and moved on slowly.

Damion made it to the clinic right before he collapsed again. The nurses working within stared at him for a moment, before their brain seemed to register the blood soaked body of Damion, and they rushed towards him.

They hurriedly began treating his wounds, using their abilities to dampen his pain and lower his fatigue, while another went on to start healing him gingerly.

Damion felt relieved, but that feeling was short-lived when he remembered the screen in his vision.

"F**k off!" Ragnar screamed, scaring the nurses.

They backed away, confused, then gave themselves a knowing stare.

'They must think I'm crazy,' Damion thought. 'Bah... I don't care. I've been treated like a dog before, so a mere look won't hurt.'

Damion sighed, then refocused on the screen in his face. He might as well see what it was all about if it refused to clear from his view.

Where it had come from, he couldn't tell… Its purpose? Well, he'll find out soon.

As soon as Damion saw the last sentence, his eyes became bloodshot, and he almost coughed blood from anger.

'This has gone a little too far!' He screamed in his head.

It was well known that Damion Darkblade, an orphan in the Valiant Spirit Academy, was without an Ability.

This was something seen as a taboo by most, and he was therefore ridiculed and ostracized by the masses.

He was only allowed into the academy because it was a rule that couldn't be broken. All children who have reached the age of eighteen were to be sent to the Academy to start learning more about their powers, and how to use them in the war against the Demons and Extraterrestrials.

Seeing as his weakness was used against him, Damion felt sad… and angry too. However, he grinded his teeth and moved to the second screen.

At this point, Damion raised an eyebrow and stopped reading. There was confusion written all over his face, and he honestly didn't know what to make of what he just read.

"Why go this far for a prank?" He questioned himself. "Everything looks just like a game."

Damion re-read the screens, and he had a subconscious feeling that it was all real. That there was no trickery in play.

The nurses were soon done healing him, and Damion saw the stat screen update, showing his HP going back up to a hundred.

Damion, still having some doubts about the system, decided to give it the benefit of doubt.

He moved over to a screen that showed him a quest, and he went for it.

"This definitely looks like something they'll do to make me fight them," Damion said. "But, I have this feeling that it's not their doing. It keeps coming, and I'm starting to believe it's real."

Damion stood to his feets and walked out of the clinic in his bloodied clothing. He made a beeline towards his dorm room without stopping for even a second, giving no one a look.

Though he had a class at that moment, he could just give an excuse as to why he didn't come.

One might think that he could just say he was beaten madly by some students and be free, but that wasn't how things were run. He, especially, wasn't liked by anyone because he didn't have an ability, so even if he was crippled by a group of students, he would still be spat on and never receive justice.

"It says here that I have an ability. The Shadow Ability," Damion muttered. "It also says I'm blessed by shadows. What does that mean?"

He walked into his room still staring at his system screen. He browsed through the skills section and went straight for the Shadow Skills, then without any hesitation, he subconsciously activated the skill without meaning to.

Damion suddenly saw a glowing fist flying at him with speed, going straight for his head. He panicked and dodged, but he knew he wasn't going to make it in time, he was still going to be hit.

He cursed inwardly at his slow reaction speed, then to his shock, his shadow rippled and came alive, wrapping around his body tightly like a living entity and covering every inch of his body in a swirling mass of black, and with a burst of dark energy, it forcefully exploded outward and smashed everything in its way.
