Since nothing could be found out after questioning, the cops told us not to leave the city in order to co-operate with the follow up investigation; soon this incident made headlines all over the city.
No one could believe that over a hundred of square meters of supplies disappeared without a trace. But even after nearly three weeks the culprit still hadn't been found.
It was three days till D-day, the weather seemed rather gloomy almost as if this was a prelude to the extreme cold that would soon follow I hurried to my safe house and entered full isolation mode.
3 days later the shock wave of the huge nuclear explosion swept across the globe, soon to follow was an EMP that would knock down the power grid. This was just the beginning of the devastating disaster; across the globe temperatures began to plummet overnight.
Looking at the heavy snow outside, I remained perfectly calm. What was destined to come eventually came, but the homeowner group I was on the other hand soon became lively.
After all, it was the first time such heavy snow fell in the South. I looked at all this with a calm face; perhaps for many people this would be the first time they saw snow and also be the last time they saw snow.
In my past life the heavy snow lasted 3 months and the temperature would get lower and lower each day causing many people to die.
Those who had not stocked up on food in advance would starve to death; some would freeze to death in this winter too.
The next day came and due the heavy snowfall, snow at the entrance of the residential houses had piled up to half a person's height. Even if people indoors turned the air conditioning to the maximum- they eventually restored the grid after the EMP- they still shivered from the cold- while I who had prepared various heating systems in advance was sleeping soundly.
But just then, I was suddenly awakened by my phone ringing… it was a call from Khushi
She asked cheerfully "Ash, did you know about the temperature drop when you stocked up on supplies? You didn't even tell me and now I'm freezing can you…"
Hearing this I scoffed and directly hung up the phone, which pissed off Khushi; on the other side Khushi was fuming with rage "This boot licker, he dares to hang up on me?"
Then she shamelessly texted me asking for food, after reading it I laughed "she still wants to treat me like a simp? Ha!"
I directly sent her a picture of… you guessed it Butter chicken with wine. Recognized at a glance as 'history' began to repeat itself; she immediately said that she also wanted to eat Butter chicken and drink wine as well.
Hearing this I laughed and simply replied "If you want to eat go buy it yourself at the supermarket"- Yes I tempted fate… but can you blame me?
After seeing my message Khushi was furious! But after thinking about it, she calmed down after realizing she has to do is 'hook me like a fish' slowly giving me the bait and waiting for the right chance.
I being bored started watching TV when the tablet- connected to the security system cameras monitoring the building suddenly made a noise.
Picking it up I saw Auntie Evelyn standing in front of a group of homeowners on screen saying "Everyone don't panic, this extreme weather will last 6 days at most; our neighborhood committee will help everyone through this. Rushing for supplies will only lead to price increases, if anyone dares to hoard supplies I will report to the authorities".
But a voice suddenly spoke from behind them- It was me "Auntie Evelyn, how can you be sure that this heavy snow will not last long? You are blocking everyone from going out to buy things; will you be responsible if something happens?"
Hearing this, the surrounding homeowners also echoed "If we don't hoard supplies will you be responsible if we run out of food later?"
Auntie Evelyn quickly stated "The neighborhood committee will take responsibility for this matter"
Then she pointed at me and cursed "Ash don't stir up trouble here this is an illegal act". But I didn't bother to deal with her and turned around to going back inside safe house.
A week passed quickly but the heavy snow outside showed no signs of stopping, I was having fun at home as usual when suddenly, a message came in on my phone I saw auntie Evelyn in the group chat asking me out to go shovel snow.
I didn't even think about it and directly refused her; with such heavy snow falling we'd shoveling slower than it's falling.- I wasn't going to bring out my ploughs for these assholes.
Clearly Auntie Evelyn was just trying to pick a fight; this got her mashing her teeth. In anger then Auntie Evelyn tried commanding me with the authority of the neighborhood committee.
"…Ashok! Go out and shovel snow go out right now! Whoever dares to oppose will certainly be dealt with by the committee after the snow disaster ends." She messaged; seeing this cold show of authority I replied "How come I don't see you calling out the rich kids in the neighborhood? Why are you just picking on us honest people and not the rich kids in the neighborhood also?"
I decided to add fuel to fire, "Auntie Evelyn, since you're so capable. Why don't you ask Raj and Abhay to shovel the snow?"
Abhay was the boss of a construction project with hundreds of workers under him; Raj is a well-connected rich kid as well. In my past life, these two guys broke into my house and took all my
food- I will have my revenge…
Hearing what I said other people also started making a commotion in the homeowner group- I went something like.
Amber is right: "Right! Why don't you ask them? You…"
Mister Handsome: "Aunty Evelyn, Ashok is right; if you want us to come out and clear the snow, call
Raj and Abhay out first!"
…
Seeing the messages, Auntie Evelyn immediately cursing- they were private messages- clearly my words made it hard for her to step down so she could only grit her teeth; calling out the two in the group to shovel snow together.
Abhay saw the message; he immediately started cursing- on the group- "Are you crazy Ashok? I'm not going to shovel any snow! I'll kill you if you bother me again"
Raj also responded "Wow! This idiot is talking big now. You've been acting high and mighty everyday now; you really think you're the boss? I don't even want to bother dealing with you poor souls…"
