Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

She merely remained there for a time, trying to collect herself and slow her beating heart.

Although she was safe at this point, the incident was still disturbing in her thoughts. The girl was being subjected to horrible acts by the males, which she found unbearable.

She began to quickly make her way back to her home. All she wanted to do was go home and forget about the terrifying events of the previous evening since she was afraid and worn out.

When Evangeline stumbled into the house, she was met with her mother's worried face.

Mother: "Oh my goodness, where have you been? I was so worried about you! You were out so late!"

Evangeline: gasping for breath "I...I'm sorry, mother. I went to the forest and...I saw something terrible...and then they were chasing me...." Evangeline said still panting.

Mother: "What? What did you see? What happened? Are you alright?"

Evangeline: tears streaming down her face "I saw...I saw some men...they were hurting a girl in the forest. She was screaming and begging them to stop, but they didn't listen. It was so terrible!"

She continued " then they saw me and I ran away before they c..could catch me..." her mother Eliza seemed relief and grateful to God for saving her daughter but thinking about the other girl, ached her heart.

But Evangeline continued to tell about Kevin and her assumption that maybe those men are responsible for the missing girls in their village.

Mother: widening her eyes in amazement and worry "What? Do you believe they could be to blame for the girls going missing?" Evangeline: crying as she nods "Yes, I believe so. Kevin, was one of them, the farm worker of our village, and I saw him. I was able to personally witness the incident, mother it was horrible. " Mother: becoming increasingly concerned " this is devastating news. We must do something . We cannot allow those men to continue abusing young girls. We have to move quickly to alert the villagers and assist the girl in the forest."

Evangeline's mother was small and thin, with olive skin and dark brown hair that was beginning to turn a light shade of grey.

Although she had a worried and worried expression on her face, her protective and loving look was held in her intrigued eyes. Her mouth was slightly open as she absorbed the information her daughter was giving her, her face scrunched in terror and shock.

Eliza hold her sobbing and scared daughter's hand and was about to leave their cottage to inform the villagers.

But they could leave,Iin the doorway stood her grandmother Lara, who looked alarmed and concerned called out to them.

Compared to her daughter in law, Lara had a stronger physique, indicating that she had put in a lot of work throughout her life. Her face was large and resilient, with a dark pair of bright eyes and a sharp nose.

Her stern look and strong features stood out when her hair, covered with silver, was pushed back into a tight bun.

Lara: glancing between her granddaughter and daughter-in-law "What's going on here? "Why is Evangeline in tears?

"She went into the forest and saw something...something terrible," said mother, with a deep sigh and an urgent explanation that she had to go help the poor vulnerable girl in the forest. "She claims that Kevin from the farm was one among the males she witnessed abusing a girl." " now we are going to call for help for that girl. Are you coming with us?" asked Eliza.

Lara: eyes widening and face hardening "Oh no, this is terrible news...but you must not tell anyone about this."

Mother: looking questionably at her mother-in-law eyes widening "What do you mean?!! We have to tell people. We can't let those men continue harming innocent girls. We must help her!!!" Evangeline was too shocked hearing her grandmother and stared at her in disbelief.

Lara: shaking her head firmly "No, it's too d..dangerous. You don't know what those men are capable of but I know. We need to be careful, and keep this information to ourselves. So you aren't going anywhere"

Lara: looking sternly at Evangeline and Eliza "You must promise me that you will not tell anyone about what you saw in the forest tonight. Do you understand me?"

Evangeline: nodding fearfully "Y-yes, grandmother. I promise I won't tell anyone."

Lara: turning her gaze towards Eliza, her eyes serious "And you, Eliza, you must keep this secret as well." Eliza nodded knowing what Lara said was true she couldn't put her family in danger but felt terrible for not being able to help that girl. So she just stared at the ground.

Evangeline: looking confused and scared "But...but why can't we tell the police? They can help us, can't they?"

Lara: shaking her head, her expression grim "No, my dear. The police...they are working for the gang. We can't trust them to help us."

Evangeline: eyes widening in shock and fear "What? But...but how do you know that?"

Lara: her gaze hardened "I have my sources. And that's all you need to know for now,...we must stay careful"

Evangeline was about to ask more but Lara: interrupting her granddaughter before she can ask any more questions "No more questions, child. You must trust me and do as I say. For your own safety, and for the safety of everyone in this village. Do you understand?"

Evangeline: nodding, still looking frightened and confused "Y-yes, grandmother. I understand. I won't say anything to anyone."

Evangeline felt distressed by her failure to help the girl she witnessed being tortured in the forest.

Even though Evangeline had promised her grandma, the shame she carried with her was too much for her to bear.

It broke her heart that there was nothing she could do to save the girl those men were hurting in the woods.

Pretending everything had not happened and being silent felt dreadful.
