The mist thickened, wrapping around the group like a suffocating shroud. Each breath felt damp and heavy, and the forest seemed to twist and change with every step they took. Adira's eyes darted through the haze, searching for threats that could materialize at any moment.
Kael led the way, his steps sure despite the treacherous terrain. Kane walked close to Adira, his hand brushing hers whenever the path narrowed. Finn trailed behind, his usual chatter absent as he muttered curses under his breath at every misplaced step.
"Tell me again why we're walking straight into this nightmare," Finn grumbled.
"Because running would get us killed faster," Kael replied curtly, not bothering to look back.
Adira glanced at Finn, her lips curving into a faint smile despite the tension in her chest. "Don't worry. If something jumps out, you can always scream louder than it."
"Very funny," Finn muttered. "Next time, I'm hiding behind you."
