The week after their time at the park, Ji-eun couldn't stop thinking about Ji-hoon. Their time together had been easy, full of laughter and simple moments that felt surprisingly profound. As the days passed, Ji-eun realized that what she had felt for him wasn't just admiration or friendship—it was something more.
But the uncertainty lingered. What if she misread the signals? What if he didn't feel the same way? It was one thing to share a good time together, but it was another thing entirely to confess her feelings. Ji-eun had never been good at expressing her emotions, especially not when it came to matters of the heart.
At school, Ji-hoon continued to treat her with the same warmth and kindness, but something in his eyes—something subtle—told Ji-eun that he, too, had been thinking about their time together. She found herself smiling at him across the classroom, her heart fluttering whenever their eyes met. Yet, she didn't know how to bridge the gap between friendship and something more.
That afternoon, Ji-eun was sitting alone in the courtyard during lunch, trying to concentrate on her homework. The sun was shining brightly, and there was a slight breeze, but all she could focus on was the weight in her chest. She wanted to talk to Ji-hoon. She wanted to tell him what was on her mind, but fear kept her frozen.
As if on cue, Ji-hoon appeared, his familiar smile lighting up his face when he saw her. "Hey," he said, settling down next to her on the bench. "You look deep in thought."
Ji-eun couldn't help but laugh nervously. "I guess I am. Just... a lot on my mind."
Ji-hoon glanced at her with a knowing look. "Mind sharing?"
Ji-eun hesitated. Was this the moment? The moment to say everything she had been feeling? To tell him that her heart raced when he smiled at her and that she thought about him more than she was willing to admit?
"Actually…" she began, her voice quieter than she intended. "I've been thinking about us."
Ji-hoon raised an eyebrow. "Us?" His expression was unreadable, but his gaze was gentle.
"Yeah," Ji-eun continued, her heart pounding. "I guess I'm just confused. I've been so afraid of not being enough for everyone that I never let myself be... real. With you, I feel like I don't have to pretend. And I... I don't know how to say this, but I think I like you. A lot."
The words rushed out of her in a whirlwind, and when she finished, she immediately regretted it. She had just thrown all of her feelings out there, and now she felt exposed, vulnerable, and terrified.
For a long moment, Ji-hoon said nothing. Ji-eun's heart sank, and she looked down at her hands in her lap, wishing she could take back everything she'd said.
But then, to her surprise, Ji-hoon reached for her hand, gently placing his on top of hers. "You don't have to apologize for that, Ji-eun," he said softly. "I've been feeling the same way. I like you, too. I've liked you for a while."
Ji-eun's head snapped up, her eyes wide in disbelief. "Really?"
Ji-hoon smiled, his eyes shining with sincerity. "Yeah. And I've been waiting for you to see that."
Relief and joy flooded through Ji-eun all at once, making her feel light-headed. The person she had been afraid to confess to felt the same way. It felt like everything had clicked into place.
"You're not just saying that because you're trying to make me feel better, are you?" Ji-eun asked, her voice shaky with uncertainty.
Ji-hoon chuckled softly. "No, I'm serious. I've been wanting to ask you for a while now. I just didn't know if you'd feel the same."
Ji-eun blinked, trying to process everything. She had spent so long pretending to be someone else, and now, here was Ji-hoon—accepting her for who she truly was, flaws and all.
"So... what now?" Ji-eun asked, a nervous smile tugging at her lips.
"Well, now we can do this," Ji-hoon said, his voice filled with warmth. He leaned closer, his eyes never leaving hers. "We can start something real. Just you and me."
Ji-eun felt her heart swell. This wasn't just a crush or a fleeting moment. This was the beginning of something she had longed for: a real connection, free from the expectations of others.
She smiled, feeling her nervousness melt away. "Okay," she said softly. "Let's do this."
Ji-hoon grinned, his expression brighter than she had ever seen it. He leaned in slightly, as if to kiss her, but stopped just short, his eyes asking for permission.
Ji-eun closed the gap, her lips meeting his in a soft, tentative kiss. It was gentle at first, a tender exploration of feelings long held back. But as the kiss deepened, Ji-eun felt all the weight of her fears and doubts slip away.
When they finally pulled apart, Ji-hoon smiled, his forehead resting against hers. "I'm glad we did this," he whispered.
"Me too," Ji-eun replied, her heart fluttering with the certainty that this was the beginning of something beautiful.
