"Where's she!? Veronica, Ever's mother-in-law, had a voice so loud the neighbors could hear. Alessandro, Where's that wicked woman of yours?"
Ever ran downstairs, startled to see what was happening that her mother-in-law would scream for. She always created arguments, and Allesandro would believe everything coming out of her mouth.
"What is going on?" At that moment, her eyes shifted to the stairs. Dorothy, the maid, was bringing down her suitcase. "Where is she taking my bag"?
"Did you think you'd trap my son and get away with it? Take your filthy clothes and get out!" Veronica yelled. "What's done in the dark always comes to light."
Ever looked at Veronica confused. She was still trying to process what was happening. What could her mother-in-law plan this time? The silence from her husband was more suffocating, leaving her desperate for answers. She knew this time she might not survive.
"Mother, I'm a bit confused. Can you clarify? Ever asked. When she was drowning in happiness that she was finally going to be a mother, she didn't expect much drama to come.
"See for yourself." Allesandro spoke, breaking his long silence. Her eyes shifted to the prints he threw at her. She bends down to pick one up.
"And then?" She was taken aback when she turned the photo. "I'm lost." Of course, you're always lost; that's why Allesandro picked a stray like you. Veronica mocked, clapping her hands.
Ever was lost for words at what she was seeing. The picture contained her and the man she once helped in a compromising position. She bent down to pick up another. There were pictures of her and other men in the shopping center, the streets, and at restaurants.
"Is this how you love me?" Allesandro dragged her to the door, very infuriated.
"Honey," she began, wanting to clear her name.
"Oh, please don't even dare to call me that!" He cut her words. I was devoted to our marriage, but you betrayed me for cheap thrills.
"Honey, look, listen to me," she pleaded desperately, holding his hands. This was written by Veronica. She never really accepted her, but her husband was clueless.
"Don't touch me! You might even infect me; stay away from me! he yelled.
Ever welled up, she never thought of doing that to her high school love, nor would she think of living without him.
"You even used my bank cards to hook every man and even buy one a house. You didn't think you'd be caught, he continued, grabbing her by the neck.
Ever struggled to breathe, and that's when Veronica interrupted. "Son, you can't dirty your hands for a filthy woman like her," Veronica said, faking innocence.
Ever coughed, trying to say something, but was cut.
"I'm doing Charity my foot!"Using my money and fucking every community member,is that what you call charity?
He looked at her disgusted. He was heartbroken. He had been broken ever since he saw the evidence. His mother could never lie to him; that was what he believed. Unknowingly, his mother created this mess just for her benefit.
"Ever," he sighed heavily.
Ever's eyes lifted at the voice he used to call her name. She knew that what was coming next would be over.
"There is no "us" anymore. Sign these papers and leave my house, he growled, not even looking at her.
"Alessandro, honey, you can't do this to us," she crawled to him. We are pregnant. Ever split out, thinking it would knock some sense into him.
"You mean a bastard child? Veronica snapped at her. She felt a wave of panic, thinking her son would believe this. "Don't play this card on my son."
"It's his child. I was going to invite him to the doctor to confirm my pregnancy. Honey, look! She holds his hands, hoping he could have a change of heart. He always wanted a mini him in the house. "Are you not happy?" she asked when she saw that he was still wearing a frown.
"I'm not a toy; I AM NOT A FUCKING PLAYGROUND!" he yelled, dragging her hand."Get out of my house. I don't want to see your face anymore; I no longer love you."
"I will find a replacement soon and get married just like you replaced me."
Please, Allesandro, don't do this; where will I go? She crawled back to him, pleading once more, her face wet with tears streaming.
Go to whoever you find... Before he could finish his words, he was interrupted.
"Sir, forgive her. Madam could never betray you like this. She's the kindest woman I know."
"Oh great," Veronica blurted. "How dare you interfere in our family matters?" You're nothing but a piece of tissue; I can replace you very soon."
But old madam... Her words were cut by Allesandro.
"Shut up! What do you know about her because you're always in this house? Or you sneak out with her to meet several men.
"Mother, take this trash away from me." He spat.
"Dorothy! Veronica yelled. "Take this filthy friend of yours away from here."
No! No! Allesandro, please. A child cannot grow without a father.
"Leave me alone, you cheater, you disgust me!"
On hearing that Dorothy ached for her, she knew if she said more, she might lose her job.
"Let's go, madam," she said, pulling her away. Take this. You will see what you do with the little cash. I'm sorry you're going through this. Stop crying. Everything will be well. Be strong for the child." He will come back to you, trust me."
Ever clung on to the money as if her life depended on it.
"Take care, Dorothy."
