Chapter 15 - Chapter 14: Shadows of Deception

The corridors of the Academy were alive with whispers, each word carried by unseen currents of unease. Something had shifted in the air, an undercurrent of distrust that seemed to coil around Eren wherever he went. Despite his best efforts to blend in, the shadow of the Grimoire followed him, an invisible specter haunting his every step.

He tightened his grip on the satchel containing the book as he made his way to the restricted archives. The decision to seek answers had not come lightly, but Eren knew he couldn't afford ignorance. The Grimoire's power was growing, and with it, the stakes of his choices.

The door to the archives loomed before him, its iron-bound surface marked with intricate runes. Eren placed his hand on the sigil in the center, reciting the incantation he had memorized from a stolen text. The runes flared briefly, then dimmed as the door creaked open, revealing rows of ancient tomes and scrolls.

He stepped inside, his eyes scanning the shelves for anything that could help him understand the Grimoire's true nature. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the soft rustle of parchment as Eren flipped through pages of forgotten lore.

"Looking for something?"

Eren froze. The voice was calm, but the edge beneath it was unmistakable. He turned to see Liora standing in the doorway, her arms crossed and her gaze sharp.

"How did you—"

"Know you'd be here?" she finished, stepping into the room. "You're not as subtle as you think, Eren. The way you've been acting lately, it's like you're trying to get caught."

Eren's mind raced, searching for a plausible explanation. "I was researching. The Academy teaches us to explore knowledge, doesn't it?"

Liora's lips curved into a humorless smile. "Don't insult me. You've been poking around places you shouldn't, asking questions about things that are better left buried. What are you really up to?"

Eren set the tome in his hand down carefully, meeting her gaze with forced calm. "Why do you care? Last I checked, the archives aren't off-limits to students."

Her eyes narrowed. "This isn't about rules. It's about trust. And right now, you're making it very hard to trust you."

The tension in the room was suffocating, each word a step closer to a confrontation neither of them wanted. Eren could feel the Grimoire pulsing faintly in his satchel, its presence a reminder of the dangerous game he was playing.

"Liora," he said, his voice measured, "if I told you I was trying to protect the Academy, would you believe me?"

"From what?" she asked, suspicion lacing her tone.

Eren hesitated. He couldn't tell her the truth—not yet. "From forces you don't understand. Forces that are already here."

Her expression hardened. "If you know something, then tell me. Hiding it will only make things worse."

"I can't," Eren said, the weight of the words crushing him. "Not yet."

Liora studied him for a long moment, then stepped back. "Whatever you're doing, you're playing with fire. And if you're not careful, you'll burn us all."

With that, she turned and left, leaving Eren alone in the archives.

Back in his room, Eren placed the Grimoire on the desk, its dark aura filling the small space. The encounter with Liora had rattled him, her words cutting deeper than he wanted to admit.

"You're being reckless," the Grimoire said, its voice smooth and insidious. "She's a threat, Eren. You should deal with her before she becomes a problem."

"She's not a threat," Eren snapped, though the doubt lingered in his mind.

The book laughed, a low, mocking sound. "Naivety will be your undoing. Trust is a weakness, one that your enemies will exploit."

Eren slammed his fist on the desk, his frustration boiling over. "Enough! I won't hurt her. She's not the enemy."

"Not yet," the Grimoire whispered. "But she will be."

Eren leaned back in his chair, exhaustion seeping into his bones. The line between ally and adversary was blurring, and he wasn't sure how much longer he could keep his secrets safe.

---

The next day, Eren found himself summoned to the Academy's Council Chamber. The circular room was imposing, its walls lined with tapestries depicting the institution's storied history. At the center stood a long table, around which the senior instructors sat, their expressions a mix of curiosity and concern.

Liora was there too, her presence a sharp reminder of the previous night's confrontation.

"Eren Veylen," one of the instructors began, his tone formal. "We've been informed of your... unusual behavior as of late. Certain activities have raised questions about your intentions."

Eren forced himself to remain calm. "With all due respect, I've done nothing wrong."

"Perhaps," the instructor said, his gaze piercing. "But you've been observed in places you shouldn't be, accessing information far beyond your current rank. What exactly are you searching for?"

"I'm searching for ways to strengthen our defenses," Eren said, choosing his words carefully. "The world outside these walls is changing, and we need to be prepared."

The council exchanged glances, their expressions unreadable.

"Your ambition is commendable," the instructor said finally, "but your methods are questionable. We'll be watching you closely, Eren. See that you stay on the right path."

As he left the chamber, Eren's mind was a whirlwind of emotions. The scrutiny was tightening, and the walls around him were closing in. But despite the pressure, one thing was clear: he couldn't afford to falter.

The shadows were thickening, and the time for caution was running out.
