Chapter 16 - Chapter 15: The Silent Pact

Night cloaked the Academy in a shroud of stillness. Eren stood on the terrace of his dormitory, gazing out at the shadowy expanse of the courtyard below. The cool wind brushed against his face, but it did little to calm the storm within him.

The Grimoire sat open on the desk behind him, its dark pages flickering faintly in the dim candlelight. Since the confrontation with Liora and the council, Eren felt as though every step he took was on the edge of a blade. His actions were being scrutinized, his motives questioned, and yet he could not stop. The power he sought was no longer just about survival—it was becoming a necessity.

"You're hesitating again," the Grimoire's voice slithered into his thoughts.

Eren turned to face the book, its twisted symbols glowing faintly. "I'm being careful. There's a difference."

"Careful," the Grimoire echoed mockingly. "A dangerous word for a man with ambition. Carefulness breeds hesitation, and hesitation invites failure."

"I'm not going to fail," Eren said, his voice firm despite the doubt gnawing at him.

"You're already failing," the book countered. "The council doesn't trust you. Liora doesn't trust you. They will turn on you soon, Eren. And when they do, your carefulness will leave you defenseless."

Eren clenched his fists, resisting the urge to argue further. Deep down, he knew the Grimoire wasn't wrong. The council's warning had been a clear message: his every move was now under a microscope.

Yet the Grimoire offered no solutions, only provocations. It whispered of power, of dominion, but never of peace. Eren's path was becoming clearer, but the destination remained shrouded in uncertainty.

The Secret Meeting

The following day, Eren received an unexpected message. A small note slipped under his door bore a single sentence: "Meet me in the southern wing at midnight. Come alone."

He stared at the note, his mind racing. The southern wing was rarely used, a section of the Academy long abandoned after structural damage made it unsafe. Whoever had sent this message wanted secrecy, but for what purpose?

At midnight, Eren slipped through the shadowed corridors of the Academy, his senses on high alert. The air was damp, and the faint sound of dripping water echoed in the silence.

The southern wing was as desolate as he had imagined. Cracked walls and broken beams loomed above him, and the faint smell of decay lingered in the air. He tightened his grip on the satchel containing the Grimoire as he stepped into the meeting spot.

A hooded figure emerged from the darkness, their silhouette tall and imposing. Eren tensed, his instincts screaming caution.

"You came," the figure said, their voice low and distorted.

"Who are you?" Eren demanded, his hand hovering near the satchel.

The figure chuckled softly. "A friend. Or an enemy, depending on how you choose to proceed."

"I don't have time for games," Eren said sharply.

"Neither do I," the figure replied. "That's why I'm here. You're walking a dangerous path, Eren Veylen. One that many have walked before you—and failed."

Eren's eyes narrowed. "How do you know my name? And what do you know about my path?"

The figure reached into their cloak and pulled out a small, black crystal. It pulsed faintly, a resonance that Eren recognized immediately. It was attuned to the same energy as the Grimoire.

"You're not the first to be chosen," the figure said. "But you might be the last."

A Pact in Shadows

The conversation that followed unraveled secrets Eren hadn't even begun to consider. The figure, who identified themselves only as Aven, revealed that they were part of an underground network that studied forbidden relics like the Grimoire.

"You think the Grimoire belongs to you," Aven said, their tone tinged with derision. "But it doesn't. It's a tool, a weapon, and a curse. And if you don't learn to master it, it will consume you."

Eren's jaw tightened. "I don't need your warnings. I'm handling it."

"Handling it?" Aven scoffed. "You're a pawn, Veylen. A puppet on strings you can't even see. The Grimoire isn't just power—it's a test. One that will break you if you're not ready."

"Then why are you here?" Eren asked.

"To offer you a choice," Aven said, stepping closer. "Join us. We can help you understand the Grimoire, teach you to harness its power without losing yourself."

Eren studied the figure, his mind a whirlwind of suspicion and curiosity. Could this network be trusted? Or was this just another trap, another layer of deception in an already convoluted game?

"And if I refuse?"

Aven's eyes gleamed beneath their hood. "Then you're on your own. And trust me, Veylen, you won't survive alone."

The weight of the decision pressed down on Eren. Aligning with this group could give him the knowledge he desperately needed, but it would also mean exposing himself to yet another layer of danger.

"I'll think about it," he said finally.

Aven nodded. "You don't have much time. The Academy isn't as safe as you think. When you're ready, follow the shadows."

With that, the figure vanished into the darkness, leaving Eren alone in the ruins of the southern wing.

Reflections and Resolve

Back in his room, Eren sat before the Grimoire, its pages glowing faintly in the dim light. The encounter with Aven had left him shaken, their words replaying in his mind.

"What did they tell you?" the Grimoire asked, its voice calm and measured.

Eren hesitated. "They said you're a test. That you'll destroy me if I'm not careful."

The book chuckled, a sound that sent chills down his spine. "They're not wrong. But they're not right either. I am what you make of me, Eren. Nothing more, nothing less."

Eren leaned forward, his fingers tracing the twisted symbols on the page. "Then I'll make sure you don't destroy me. I'll control you, not the other way around."

The Grimoire's laughter echoed in the room, but this time, it held a note of approval. "We'll see, Sovereign. We'll see."

As the first light of dawn crept into the sky, Eren made his decision. He would tread carefully, but he wouldn't back down. If Aven's network could offer answers, he would take them. But he wouldn't let them—or anyone else—dictate his path.

The shadows were closing in, but Eren was no longer afraid. If he was to walk this dark road, he would do so on his own terms. And when the time came, he would be ready.
