Chapter 12 - Chapter 12

Lila stared at the letter in her hands, its words replaying in her mind like a lullaby and a storm all at once. Her biological mother's love was evident in every line, but the mystery of her biological father lingered like a shadow over the revelation. Who was he? Why had he disappeared? And why did no one know where he was?

The questions swirled in her head as she made her way to the garden. Damon was there, as he often was, tending to the flowers with an almost meditative focus.

"You've been quiet," Damon said without looking up, sensing her presence. "Did you get the answers you needed?"

Lila sank onto the bench beside him, holding out the letter. "Some answers, yes. But now I have even more questions."

Damon read the letter carefully, his expression unreadable. When he handed it back, he met her gaze. "You're wondering about your father."

She nodded. "I don't even know where to start. He's this phantom figure in my life, but I feel like finding him is the key to understanding who I am."

Damon leaned back, his thoughtful silence comforting. "I can help you, if that's what you want. But I need to know, are you ready for what you might find? Sometimes the answers we seek don't bring the closure we hope for."

Lila hesitated. "I don't know if I'm ready, Damon. But I can't ignore this. I need to know, even if it's painful."

Damon's nod was resolute. "Then we'll start together. I'll make some calls. If your father is out there, we'll find him."

That night, Lila lay awake, staring at the ceiling. Her conversation with Damon had stirred both hope and fear. As much as she wanted to know the truth, she couldn't shake the anxiety of what she might uncover.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was Aiden.

Aiden: "Thinking about you. I hope you're okay."

Lila's fingers hovered over the screen. She hadn't told Aiden about her decision to search for her father. Their relationship was already strained and she didn't know if this would bring them closer or push them further apart.

Finally, she typed back: "I'm trying to figure things out. It's… complicated."

His response came almost immediately. "I'm here for you, Lila. Always."

She stared at his message, her heart torn. Aiden's support meant so much to her, but she couldn't ignore the lingering mistrust. Could she really let him back in while her life was still in chaos?

The next morning, Damon came by with news. "I've tracked down someone who might know about your father," he said. "An old friend of your mother's, she's agreed to meet with you."

Lila's stomach churned with a mix of excitement and dread. "When?"

"Today," Damon said. "I'll take you there."

They arrived at a small café on the outskirts of town, where a middle-aged woman with kind eyes waited for them. She introduced herself as Margaret, a close friend of Lila's biological mother.

"I never thought I'd see you," Margaret said, her voice warm but tinged with sadness. "You look so much like her."

Lila's throat tightened. "I need to know about my father," she said. "Please, anything you can tell me."

Margaret hesitated, her gaze flickering to Damon before settling on Lila. "Your father… he wasn't an easy man to know. He was charming but troubled. When your mother told him she was pregnant, he panicked. He disappeared before you were born, but not because he didn't care. He thought he wasn't good enough for you or your mother."

Lila's heart ached at the thought. "Do you know where he is now?"

Margaret shook her head. "I haven't heard from him in years. But I know he always regretted leaving. If he's out there, I believe he would want to know you."

Lila felt a flicker of hope. "Do you have any idea where I can start looking?"

Margaret handed her a faded photograph. "This was taken the last time I saw him. He mentioned wanting to start fresh somewhere far away. Maybe this will help."

Lila studied the photo, her father's face unfamiliar yet strangely comforting. She didn't know what she would find, but for the first time, she felt like she had a direction.
