"You're leaving? Tonight?" Jasper's voice made me spin around, and there he stood in the doorway of my apartment, his frame silhouetted by the dim light coming from the corridor.
I froze, clutching the edge of the small suitcase I'd hastily packed. The twins were sleeping in their bassinets, and every instinct in me screamed to protect them.
"Why do you care?" I snapped, keeping my voice razor sharp, which disguised the fear that crept up my spine.
He stepped inside and closed the door behind him. "Don't do this, Skylar. You can't just disappear. Think about the twins-they need stability."
"Stability?" I laughed bitterly. "Is that what you're offering, Jasper? Because the only thing you've brought into my life is chaos."
He stepped nearer, his jaw clenching. "I'm trying to help you."
