Chapter 9 - FAILED HEART

It was 11 pm, and bright, flashing lightning lit up the sky like fireworks; banging, crashing thunder roaring furiously, sizzling, electrifying lightning zipping across the night sky, it was about to rain. Fred needed to pack in some of the clothes he had spread that evening. He ran out and felt the rain whip down like crystal nails, and streaky lightning emblazoned the sky. While running not to be drenched by the rain, Fred fell into a broken drainage, it pierced through his skin-deep inside that it could feel his bone. Fred groaned in pain, but his screams could not be heard. The rain sounded like the buzzing of angry bees. Fred was already drenched in the rain, stuck in the drain, and couldn't get help. Fred struggled to free himself, but the more he tried he gets hurt the more, almost like his flesh is being torn out of his bones. He couldn't take the pains of trying to lift his legs, so he decided to stay until an angel comes to save him. It rained cats and dogs all through the night. It was morning and the rain had settled. Fred was so weak of cold, he felt he was going to die, he was unable to feel his legs anymore, so he mumbled his last prayer.

Fred heard the chirping and singing of birds around him, almost like they were making an obituary melody. He heard his neighbors who were now awake, making noise. He tried to call for help, but his lips forsook him. Furthermore, he kept trying, and it frustrated him until he blacked out.

The school bell rang, and all students hurried to their various classes. Fred wasn't in class.

"Our assistant headman is not here today" James shouted. "Now, our mission begins" he whispered to his friends. They giggled.

When it was recess, Lynn matched into Fred's class hoping to see him there, but she was disappointed. She felt very unsafe with the way his classmates stared at her, so she hurried out of his class immediately. She went back to her block and tried calling on the phone, but he was not picking up and it bothered her. Likewise, she was about to take out her book for the next class when she saw a letter in her bag.

"Who dropped this here?" she asked herself as she opened it and read.

Dear Lynnette,

I am sorry I have to dump you this way, but I can't just help it. I have a girlfriend, Freda. She hates you, and I hate that she hates you, but I love her. I want to use this opportunity to tell you that I never liked you, it was all just a game and I hope never to see you in my class again,

Yours,

Frederick Okorie.

Tears welled up in her eyes. A single tear rolled down her cheek, she felt his throat closing up as tears streamed down her face.

She was vexed, took her bags, and left the classroom in anger. She headed home and was able to freakishly bypass the gate man without notice. Not only that, but she matched Fred's house and opened the gate only to see Fred lying lifeless on the floor. Likewise, she screamed and neighbors came around. They were able to get the metal window pane out of Fred's leg, he had lost a lot of blood and his body was ice-cold. He was rushed to the hospital immediately. Lynn cried on her way to the hospital, begging him to wake up and promising him heaven on earth if he woke up, but to no avail.

Fred was admitted and an operation was conducted on his legs, he had a fracture.

Lynn stood as a guardian, but she was asked to call an adult. She called Derek and Derek called their parents.

Derek and his parents came to the hospital about an hour later. They paid Fred's bills while they waited for him to regain consciousness. Lynn became a prayer warrior.

Fred gained consciousness and Lynn took care of him. She fed him, bathed him, and stayed by him immediately after school. Fred stayed in the hospital for a week and some days. Fred had asked Lynn how she explained who he was to her parents, and she laughed hard at the question. She told him they knew he was a friend of Derek, but they were concerned about how she took care of him like a wife. She had explained that they were friends, but she liked Fred. Her mother kept singing her a song about the dangers of teenage dating, and made her assure her that she would not go beyond friendship.
