Chapter 7 - Where Are We?

Berkay seemed rather distressed, and as he waved through the holographic images repeatedly, Ridge and Caroline approached from the commander's seat.

"Is everything alright Berkay?" asked Ridge while walking up to the table to look at the images.

"Hmm, yes and no," Berkay replied quickly while focusing on the maps.

"Oh? What do you mean," Caroline asked just before Ridge could open his mouth and utter the same words. Tsking his tongue Berkay pulled away from the maps and scratched his head while looking at the pair.

"The good news is that I was able to gather all the available data from the ship's map database, not to mention the fact that the entire system seems to be working fine for the most part, but that leads me to my second piece and the bad news," Berkay said with a bit of an exaggerated tone.

Showing his palm in confusion Ridge asked, "Well? What does that mean, you can't just cut off your sentence for dramatics this is serious, no?"

Chuckling a little in embarrassment Berkay nodded, "Right? Sorry, anyway the bad news is that a couple of our long-range sensors seem to have been destroyed, and I mean completely. The regular sensors from the ship seemed to indicate that they had been pretty much torn or ripped off."

Just before Ridge or Caroline could speak this time, berkay quickly held up his finger and gestured for them to come closer to the navigation table, so they did.

"Luckily we have shorter-ranged sensors that are used for far more precise actions and for now they can be used to scan our surroundings and sort of tabulate or locate where we ended up after the incident," Berkay explained while also showing the ship's holographic model for clarification.

Sighing heavily, Ridge once again, held his forehead and then wiped his face, "Okay.. well, for now just scan our surroundings and try to find out where we are. Even if the sensors are shorter from what I remember they can still scan a good portion of the Coro System so the range shouldn't be too bad."

"Mmm, about that, I have one more piece of bad news, I already scanned our surroundings, and there is nothing within range, meaning we are no longer in the Coro System from what I can guess. There are also no familiar and marked-down asteroid belts or burning stars to use as reference," Berkay said while shaking his head.

Hearing this Ridge felt his stomach drop and let out yet another breath to calm himself, "Alright, let's just try and fix up the ship and see where we go from there, don't let anyone know about this for now, I want to address them all as a group so people are aware of the situation. When the fixes have been made try and pick a direction for us to travel. We'll just hold on for now and move to find anything that could help us get our bearings together."

Having given Berkay more orders he began walking away after returning a salute and naturally, Caroline followed close behind.

"Caroline, for now just lead our engineering team to survey the entirety of the ship with the other crew members and find any deficiencies that need to be repaired or improved. Then after doing so come up with blueprints or a plan of some kind to create a smeltery if you can," Ridge said as they exited the bridge and began walking down the now somewhat clean hallway where they fought not even an hour ago.

"Roger that, also a smeltery? what are you going to do with that?" Caroline answered back as they walked.

Turning a right they continued down another hall, "I want to smelt the minerals we are transporting and use them on our ship. The cargo bay is big enough for a small makeshift shipyard as well and we could use it to create transports later down the road. I am not sure how long we will end up being here so I want work to be done for the future."

"Understood sir, but there is another problem, from what I remember at least, there aren't components available on this ship to create excess engines and certain controls, not to mention the glass for the cockpit that would allow the pilots to see. Furthermore, I don't think we even have many trained pilots." Caroline replied as they once again made it to the end of the hall, now taking a right.

Encountering some of the people cleaning up the debris Ridge nodded at them as a greeting and continued the conversation after he walked past far enough to keep them from eavesdropping, "I'm aware, I just want the majority of the vessel to be created so that we can add those smaller components later, we will have to hope we encounter some sort of asteroid belt or better yet a planet with the materials needed for those things. As for pilots, I think you're forgetting something. Each soldier here including you has been trained on the military planet of Eserus in the military academy to not only shoot, swing a sword, and follow orders, but also to pilot ships ranging from scoons to frigates, we have more than enough pilots, trust me."

Walking still Ridge took a little time to clear his throat and continued, "Also we have a navigator who has been trained to pilot the smallest ship in the federation up to the largest in the federation. If anyone needs a little bit of a memory jumpstart he can give lectures here and there on how to move through space efficiently."

Stopping now Ridge turned to look back at Caroline, "Understood?"

"Yes sir," Carolien saluted, "Then get a move on and gather your team for repairs," Ridge said while returning the salute.

Nodding Caroline walked down a different hall which led to the engine room based on some of the labels on the ship. Watching her go Ridge looked over to some of the signs above and walked down the hall that was labeled cafeteria. He wanted to see what the supplies besides the ones they had gathered while they were walking looked like.

He had said previously to the entire remaining crew that there should be enough to last some x amount of years, but honestly, that wasn't taking into account any damage that could have occurred within the cafeteria kitchen after the ship had shaken from who knows what.

As he walked Ridge noticed that there didn't seem to be many other crew members working down this area so he made a point in his mind to remind some of the others that this area should also be a priority to clean up.

Coming upon a sliding door Ridge was quickly surprised that it opened by itself, it seemed the sensors magically still worked after the entire fiasco. He wasn't gonna complain about it.

The lunch room was not yet in full view and as Ridge entered the room he saw that Morad and Hank were lifting a table and fixing its position to normalcy. There were also a couple of others who were working hard to clean up some of the debris that fell from the ceiling. Luckily, although it was around twenty feet tall some of the stuff that fell didn't completely break and could probably be put right back into its place.

"Morad, Hank, how's it going so far?" Ridge asked while moving closer.

"Going good sir, I figured we should clean up some of the rooms before we clean up the halls since they are just used for walking mainly and not actual operations that keep the ship running smoothly. Though I guess a lunchroom isn't operating anything," Morad said while chuckling.

"Yup, what he said," Hank said while nodding.

"Alright, I'll join you guys, also the cafeteria is important, it's where we eat and socialize so having a clean place to do so would be best. I am gonna check on the stock real quick and then come back to clean up here," Ridge replied while smiling.

"No problem, take your time sir," Morad replied while getting back to work with Hank clearing the tables and setting them up again. Walking past them Ridge arrived at the doorway to the actual kitchen and shook his head at the mess he saw when entering.

There were pots and pans, food items that had previously been made, now wasted, as well as silverware all strewn about. Carefully stepping over the mess, he made it to the back of the kitchen and entered a dark room. Feeling for the light on the side of the door he pressed it and squinted his eyes when the room lit up.

A few rows of food and drink were what greeted him, the back of the kitchen was practically a warehouse. Grabbing the tablet that was just hanging on the wall to the left of him he powered it on and began swiping to the tab that kept the total of the supplies. Once he had the numbers up he began to sweep the room. Although he could assign someone to do this task like Morad for example, he also needed something to do and keep his mind off things for now.

Walking down the long first row he noticed that there were some missing supplies from the original number and began counting the boxes himself to fix it. Once done he rinsed and repeated the process whenever something was different from the list on the tablet. Row after row was fixed and organized and finally, after what seemed like a couple of hours Ridges's stomach began to growl.

Suppressing the gurgles that sounded out he stretched his neck with the support of his hand and sat down the tablet. Looking around he noticed there was only one more row to go.

"Hmm, I can just organize it a little later," he murmured to himself aloud.

After walking to the doorway and entering the back of the kitchen once again he noticed that it was much cleaner and there were also a couple of people cooking meals.

"Oh, hey commander, I see you're finishing up, it's around noon so we figured it would be best to cook something up with the supplies your group gathered first for the group," a man said while stirring a pot.

Sniffing the air and looking at his wrist he saw the time and noticed the smell, "Noodles, I didn't expect to smell something like that on the ship, looks like we got lucky while gathering supplies from the personal dorms," He smiled while feeling hungry.

"Yup, we were just as surprised, how lucky," the man then returned to his task and continued cooking. Moving towards the doorway and into the actual cafeteria Ridge also noticed that the tables were cleaned up and set right, only there was a pile in the corner that seemed to be where they stored the excess junk for now.

As more and more people filtered into the cafeteria presumably from feeling hungry Ridge found a spot near the wall and closed his eyes to rest.
