After we finished eating, Rowena and I carried our trays over to the collection area. The cafeteria was still buzzing with noise, a symphony of laughter, chatter, and the occasional clatter of dishes.
"You know," Rowena began as we placed our trays onto the conveyor belt, "we're going to need a survival guide for this place. Between Zephara and Maeve, I'm not sure whether to be excited or terrified."
"Both," I replied. "Definitely both. At least you only have to deal with Zephara occasionally. Maeve is going to be breathing down my neck every single day."
Rowena smirked. "Sounds like karma."
"Ugh, don't remind me," I said, rolling my eyes. "Any tips for staying alive?"
"Keep your head down and your magic ready," she said, punching me lightly on the arm. "And maybe try not to piss off any more teachers."
"Great advice," I said dryly. "I'll keep that in mind."
